Sam is the real standout here...
anubis102829 November 2018
The episode was not bad, but the real standout is Jared Padalecki - seeing him back as the old Sam really throws a spotlight on how much nuance and character he gives the character and highlights the subtle differences in facial expressions and body language from soulless Sam in the previous episodes of this season. The casting in this show has always been top notch and the acting always great, but Padalecki really shows his chops here. Kudos.

The brotherly bond in all its glory
zombiehigh1818 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Our Sam is back, with all the puppy eyes and "I understand your pain" persona and Dean is happy and relaxed again, We fans are in Heaven.

Picking up right from last episode, Dean is concerned as Sam is not waking up ever since he got his soul back. Cas thinks that putting the soul back in place is a real bad idea and tells Dean if he wanted to kill his brother he would have done it out right. So Dean goes for a breather and discusses a case with Bobby when Sam finally wakes up. (And here comes my favourite moment is this episode, The brotherly hug! Oh, The world feels right again) Sam has no recollection of any thing after jumping in the bit with Lucifer inside and for that Dean is grateful. Yet Sam can tell Dean and Bobby are hiding Something from him, so he calls on Cas to fill on the details. (it's cute that Cas responded to Sam this time without being tricked like before). After hunting the Monster of the Week, aka Dragons, Sam goes to Dean and tells him how sorry he is for everything his soulless self had done and that he will set things right. (Oh Yeah, This is indeed our good old Sam, and he is mature enough to understand why others have been lying to him and accept responsibility for his actions, Yeay)

Upsides: (Apart from all of the above)

  • I liked Dean/Excalibur one on one, Jensen Ackles was always great in comedy.

  • The awkward reunion between Cas and Soul Sam, Cas trying hard to figure out how humans act, He is still the socially awkward angel. Both Jared and Misha were great on that scene.

  • It felt great seeing the brothers working on a case as a team like old days again, joking and watching each others back, with their relationship is stronger than ever.

  • Kim Johnston Ulrich was awesome as Dr. Eleanor Visyak, and it was cute to know she had a thing with Bobby. Oh Bobby, you seem to be more than we get on screen.

Downsides:

  • Pretty much the whole dragon/virgins story, It felt week, however it had good funny moments.

  • I don't like the Mother of All theme, especially the girl at the end she seemed too cute and young to be the big bad of the show, however I'm still waiting to see how the story unfolds.

  • I understand why Bobby couldn't look at Sam after what RoboSam had done, But Bobby, Give the boy a break.

The Purgatory's Door
claudio_carvalho26 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Dean and Bobby investigate the disappearance of teenage girls when Sam awakes after recovering his mended soul. Bobby still does not trust on Sam and Dean and his brother travel to investigate further. They find that the abducted girls are virgins and that dragons are the responsible for the kidnappings.

Dean calls Bobby and he tells the name of a specialist that may teach them how to vanquish the dragon. While Sam searches where the dragon might be hidden, Dean visits Dr. Eleanor Visyak that tells him that he needs a blade forged with dragon blood. Dean borrows a piece of the weapon with her and he goes with Sam to the sewage system where they find the missing girls. They also recovers a Fourteen Century paper and Bobby translates parts and discovers that the dragon wishes to open the purgatory's door to release the Mother of all.

"Like a Virgin" is another great episode, with well-balanced action and humor. The relationship between Dean and Sam seems to be normalized and now the brothers will face another powerful evil being. My vote is nine.

Cheap and underdeveloped
CubsandCulture7 April 2020
The dragons do not really work because the show doesn't have the proper budget to realize them. I hated how minimal the dragons are rendered and any of the joys of the episode are ultimately shallow because the center is too hallow. Furthermore, Eve/Mother of All was never really developed as the big bad-a critical element missing in this season-and this episode could have done so much more with the character. This ends up feeling like filler.

Monsters disappoint
shwetafabm20 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I have not been a fan of monsters on this show ever. Shapeshifters as monsters in themselves aren't that great either but they have the best monster episodes. A freaking dragon, how cool is that, well just about awfully potrayed, one of the worst fight sequences too. Cute dean moment and i liked the blonde women. Props to Jared because i really could tell the difference between Soul Sam, it felt like home seeing Sam and Dean together something that wasn't there in the beginning of the season.

A start to a useless villain.
snwbatz3 June 2022
The episode is fine. The idea of dragons is pretty stupid which is the biggest detractor of this episode. But everything else isn't that bad. I like the idea that they have to take virgins. But unfortunately this leads to maybe the most underdeveloped villain in the entire show.

Not one of the better episodes!
mm-3928 February 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Not one of the better Supernatural episodes! The story of the missing virgins is a rehash of the last two season's episodes. Something is unleashed again. Seen it done it before! I think the writers are running out of ideas. I found Like a Virgin to be a filler episode which bridges ideas for the next season. The viewer knows Sam will be having problems with his past, and this episode reinforces the idea. The viewer can watch the show once in order to follow the story, but would skip over a second watching of the Virgin episode. I give Like a Virgin six out of ten. Not bad, but not good either. I hope this season gets better.
