It is stated that the word Gypsy comes from the word Gyptian, short for Egyptian, but they actually came from India.
It is believed that the misnomer came from the European belief that the dark skinned nomads came from Africa.
Possibly because the only nomadic people that had come to Europe before then had been African, the only other Indians they'd met were a small number of rich spice traders.
