We watch Adele in bed, as this chapter starts. Something is troubling her. She gets up to get her breakfast. At the table, she reaches for the phone to call Paul. She acknowledges the last session went wrong, so she wants Paul to come to see her because she has a cancellation.
Frances shows signs of exhaustion. The first thing she comments is in how hungry she really is. Would Paul offer her something? Paul does not respond, so Frances figures she was not supposed to ask him. The reason she is so tired is because of a bad night she spent with her sister Trisha. She received a call from Izzy as she ended her performance. Her sister had collapsed at her apartment. Frances left the theater without taking a curtain call.
The situation at the hospital was a wrenching experience for Frances. She talks about an encounter with one of the nurses at the emergency room in which the woman questioned her judgment in not rushing Trisha sooner. Tricia had to be kept at the hospital for a few days in order to be stabilized. Th doctor attending Tricia has bad good news for Frances. In his professional opinion, the patient should be transferred to a hospice; she only has little time left to live.
Frances figures she will quit the play. She does not enjoy the theater as much now. She wants to be there for Tricia when the need arises. Going home, she tells Izzy about the result of her BracaI test, which she figures must be well received by her daughter, as she will not have the cancer gene. Instead, Izzy accuses her mother of being narcissistic. As the session is almost over, there is a knock at the door. It is Izzy who has come to get her mother because of an emergency with Tricia.
Another good chapter in this wonderful series that should please a mature and intelligent audience. Ali Selim directed with his usual sense of pacing. The episode was written by Alison Tatlock a frequent contributor. Credit should also go to the Israeli creators of the series. Gabriel Byrne, Debra Winger and Amy Ryan are a pleasure to watch.
