“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” (Warner Bros.), the year’s second-biggest grossing film so far (after the same studio’s “Dune: Part Two”). The $19.99 rental was an immediate #1 on both the iTunes (transaction counting) and Fandango (revenue) VOD charts.
The release comes 46 days after its theatrical opening, a fairly standard delay if not a bit longer. Meanwhile, “Godzilla Minus One” (Toho), the sleeper Japanese success and Oscar Visual Effects winner, has now passed the five-week mark since its domestic release with no home viewing options in sight.
The timing is tied to agreements between Legendary Films (the domestic “Godzilla” licensee) and the franchise’s Japanese owner to not directly compete with each other. As the Warners film advances in its home availability ($5.99 rentals and Max streaming still to come), it remains to be seen when Toho’s film will be permitted.

The Fall Guy, the film which once hoped to kick off the summer box office, is reportedly heading to PVOD in the US this week.
In a move sure to keep American theatre owners in good spirits, The Fall Guy seems set to make its home video debut stateside on Tuesday after a luxurious 17-day cinema exclusivity window.
The Ryan Gosling/Emily Blunt action-comedy hasn’t proved to be the original blockbuster hit everyone was hoping for. Debuting to $27.7m in its US opening weekend, the film fell short of both its $30m-$35m predicted total and Universal’s all-important $50m blockbuster target.
Why is that important? Since ye olde Covid times, Universal have struck a pretty smart deal with US theatres allowing them to put any film which doesn’t make $50m in its domestic opening weekend onto Premium Video On Demand streaming after 17 days.

Newcomer If managed to unseat Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes by just $9.0 million to claim the top spot of the box-office weekend.
In its first weekend of release, Paramount Pictures’ If took in $35.0 million, which was enough to wrestle the number one slot away from Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which brought in $26.0 million over the weekend. Despite the slide to second place, the film has still taken in $101.2 million for 20th Century Studios over the last two weeks. Debuting in third place with $12.0 million was the Lionsgate Films offering The Strangers: Chapter 1. All of this pushed last weekend’s number two film, The Fall Guy, to fourth place where it added $8.5 million over the last three days to bring its three-week total to $63.0 million for Universal Pictures. Also falling two spots was Challengers, which landed in fifth place where it added $2.9 million to raise its...

“If” (Paramount) may have fallen short of its anticipated $40 million opening, but the glass is at least half-full. Preview and initial numbers suggested it could end up around $28 million; instead, its initial estimate is $35 million.
That improvement, along with its A Cinemascore, suggests a film that could stick around. It would be a real boost for the cause of original non-franchise production. Domestic on “If” is better than foreign, which stands at $24 million, $20 million from this weekend. That puts it at $59 million worldwide.
The full weekend is projected to hit $99 million. If that becomes $100 million, it would mark the first time since Easter. By comparison, 2023 saw every weekend from April 7 through mid-August hit that level. In 2019, with significantly lower ticket prices, that was the case from post-Super Bowl through Labor Day.

The summer box office is supposed to be the time of year when popular movies can flourish, but this May has not been an ideal start to the season, with another highly anticipated film falling below expectations. Read on for the weekend box office report.
With the general lack of family films in theaters — allowing movies like “Kung Fu Panda 4” and even “Godzilla x Kong” to do very well — Paramount Pictures had very high hopes for John Krasinski‘s “If,” opening it in 4,041 theaters nationwide. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming (with Krasinski in a small role as the latter’s father), the movie received poor to mixed reviews with just 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics not having been swayed by the film’s sweet family-friendly sentimentality.

“If” only made $1.8 million in previews, which were pulled into its opening Friday number of $10.3 million.

Yesterday, it looked like John Krasinski’s If would fall wildly short of industry exceptions, with the film initially tracking for a $40 million opening. While the final $35 million start marks a significant shortfall, the weekend matinees have been stronger than expected for this poorly reviewed family film. It did about $5 million more this weekend than I predicted. Many will undoubtedly view this as a poor start for a pretty expensive ($110 million) studio film, but there’s reason to be optimistic that the movie will have legs. The film has scored a superb A CinemaScore rating, which means that even if critics (such as myself) hated it, paying audiences like it. The star-studded flick includes Ryan Reynolds and Krasinski himself in front of the camera, while Steve Carell, Phoebe Waller Bride, Emily Blunt and more play the voices of the titular IFs (imaginary friends).

“Challengers” offers a fresh take on the love triangle trope, reminiscent of Truffaut’s classic style but unique in narrative and rhythm. This film dives into a spirited rivalry that extends beyond the tennis court, using sport and competition as its dynamic backdrop. Starring Mike Faist, Josh O’Connor, and the ever-impressive Zendaya, this movie is a refreshing, youthful, and bold experience.
Plot Overview
The story revolves around Art and Patrick, two young men who form a doubles tennis team. Their lives take a compelling turn when they meet Tashi, a fellow tennis player. The introduction of Tashi sparks changes that extend far beyond the tennis court, setting the scene for a captivating triangular relationship.

Tom Rothman, the Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman and CEO, wined and dined a select few at a splendidly swish soirée Friday at Mamo Michelangelo in Antibes, hosted by Charles Finch as part of his annual Filmmakers Dinner honoring 100 years of Columbia Pictures, and there was something he said about why movies matter that has stuck with me.
Hours earlier, Rothman had introduced a gloriously restored print of Charles Vidor’s 1946 movie Gilda, starring Rita Hayworth as the eponymous nightclub temptress and Glenn Ford as the hardboiled gambler from her past.
They hate each other, but as we all know, that’s often a prelude on the road to love both in real and reel life.

Demi Moore hit the Cannes red carpet on Friday for the first time in nearly 30 years, having last attended with then-husband Bruce Willis for the premiere of The Fifth Element in 1997. This year is all about Moore as she has a film in the competition courtesy of Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance and official duties on behalf of Chopard.
It was the latter commitment that brought her to the Palais last night. Moore joined the luxury jeweler’s co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele and rising stars Mike Faist and Sophie Wilde ahead of the late-night Trophée Chopard gala ceremony at Carlton Beach. Moore was tapped to serve as the godmother of the festivities, a role that saw her take the stage and present the trophies, which are given to next-generation talents. A star player at an elite tennis school decides to stay silent when the head coach is suspended in Leonardo Van Dijl’s absorbing movie of things unsaid and subjects avoided
Filmgoers are currently gobbling up Luca Guadagnino’s tennis comedy Challengers with its hilariously imagined sexual dynamic between a female coach and male players. This debut feature from Belgian film-maker Leonardo Van Dijl, produced by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, is a reminder that in the real world, the gender relations of sex and power in tennis – or anywhere – are generally pretty different. Julie Keeps Quiet is a tense, absorbing movie of silences and absences, of difficult terrain skirted around, of subjects avoided. It’s a reminder that in key situations, to keep quiet is a stressful, strenuous and, crucially, public activity – and a survival instinct that many young people have to learn.

One of 2024’s most electric hits is our top pick among this weekend’s streaming releases, but there’s something for everyone, including a searing documentary, an oddball indie, and a couple of middling blockbusters.
The contender to watch this week: “Challengers“
Luca Guadagnino‘s box-office backspin became one of spring’s moviegoing success stories, and we’re all the luckier for it. Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist‘s love-triangle tennis lark is still playing in plenty of theaters across the country, but if you want another serve, it’s available to rent for $19.99 on VOD. It’s not impossible to imagine a “Challengers” resurgence in the fall: Guadagnino is already an Oscar darling thanks to “Call Me by Your Name,” and Zendaya seems especially poised for top-tier accolades. If nothing else, maybe Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross‘ banger of a score can net the duo’s third trophy.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness,” starring Emma Stone, freaked out Cannes Film Festival on Friday night with an anthology of stories about sex cults, cannibalism and general debauchery.
Lanthimos’ follow-up to “Poor Things” earned a 4.5-minute standing ovation, with the director and his cast — including Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau and Joe Alwyn — leaving while the applause was still going. “Kinds of Kindness” tells three distinctive stories with cast members playing different roles in each. There were a few walkouts during the Cannes premiere, most of them coming after the film’s gorier, second chapter. Lanthimos abruptly left the screening and didn’t speak to audience members once the clapping stopped.
The film, like many of Lanthimos’ avant-garde offerings, overflows with outré plot twists as well as some outrageous moments — like Chau licking sweat off her followers as part of a cult ritual, a man who becomes...

Challengers is still playing in some theaters. However, if viewing this steamy movie in public may be too much, viewers can now watch the romantic triangle entanglements from the privacy of their own homes. The Zendaya tennis tryst film has just been released on digital platforms. It may also be expected to hit Prime Video soon since the film is an Amazon original. While movies like Madame Web get mercy releases on digital after a month due to poor performances, Challengers actually enjoyed quite a bit of success for being the scope of film it is and the nature of the story.
The movie currently sits above $70 million from its worldwide gross on a $55 million budget. The critical and audience reception has been pretty positive, with a certified fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 89% with critics and a 73% audience score. It is totally unsurprising that Luca Guadagnino's "Challengers" has taken the internet by storm since its release, its fresh, adrenaline-soaked story invigorating the very concept of an erotic sports drama. The sexual tension between the central throuple — Tashi (Zendaya), Art (Mike Faist), and Patrick (Josh O'Connor) — is condensed into more subtle, tangible forms, such as the frenetic tennis matches that underline their complex, heady inner dynamics. This spirit of erotically-charged competitiveness lingers right until the end, and is meant to be absorbed via the biggest screen possible, it being the best conduit for this almost-obsessive, feverish energy. For those who wish to relax and catch this racy sports drama at home: do not worry, as the film is available to rent digitally at the moment and is expected to be available for streaming relatively soon.

When Monk concocts an elaborate joke to get more fame and acceptance, it’s taken shocking seriously, setting off a series of misadventures exploring how white America is more willing to accept the most reductive, pandering stories of Black...

Francis Ford Coppola’s long-gestating and much-discussed sci-fi epic Megalopolis had its world premiere on Thursday night at the Cannes Film Festival, and was greeted with a 10-minute standing ovation inside the Grand Lumiere Theatre, as he gave a hug to each of his his principal stars — among them Nathalie Emmanuel, Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza and Giancarlo Esposito — and threw his hat into the cheering crowd.
Coppola, who lost his wife Eleanor last month, eventually interrupted the applause to take a microphone and introduce the members of his family who were with him, including his son, Roman Coppola, and sister, Talia Shire, both of whom worked on the film. He then said of his other collaborators on the film: “They were all my family. And in fact, as [Driver’s character] Cesar says [in the film], ‘We are all one family.'”

Singles tennis is unlike any other sport. There’s no team to support a player when they’re down, no coach to pep talk between sets, no distractions to pull the spectator's eyes away from the two individuals standing on opposite sides of the net. Tennis is much more than a game — it’s a sometimes three, four or five hour relationship between two people trying to anticipate each other’s next moves. To excel at singles tennis, a player has to be an expert at reading their opponent’s strengths and weaknesses right off the bat and use them to adjust their own game. All of this complexity is exactly what director Luca Guadagnino portrayed in his box office hit, ‘Challengers,’ starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist. ‘Challengers,’ of course, had commercial appeal with Zendaya leading, a name that’s become synonymous with striking beauty, versatility and commitment...

Whilst we're still here trying to catch our breath and wolf down a post-match banana after Challengers, director Luca Guadagnino has already left the court to get the ball rolling on his next cinematic outing. And having already signed up Julia Roberts for upcoming thriller After The Hunt, the Italian auteur behind Bones And All and Call Me By Your Name seems to have tracked down his next leading man: Andrew Garfield.
As first reported by Deadline, the Spider-Man: No Way Home and Tick, Tick... Boom! is currently in negotations to star alongside Roberts in the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios production, slated for theatrical release in 2025. Coming from first-time screenwriter Nora Garrett, the film, described as an "intense dramatic thriller", centres around a college professor (Roberts) who finds both her professional and private life thrown into turmoil when a star pupil levels a scandalous accusation against one of her colleagues.

Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino is having quite the year. His tennis comedy/love triangle film “Challengers,” starring Zendaya, has already grossed $68 million worldwide—not bad for a drama without a major I.P. attached to it— and his next film, “Queer,” an adaptation of the William S. Burroughs novel starring Daniel Craig, is said to be done and will probably debut during the fall film festival circuit later this year.

The team behind “Challengers” have already had a game, set, match for being a definitive film of 2024. Yet its trio of actors, including Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist, seem to have no plans on taking a breather. O’Connor’s even ready to team up with director Luca Guadagnino once again.
Sure, the ending of “Challengers” might be considered ambiguous, with Zendaya even going so far as to say the final scene was “confusing” in an interview with the New York Times. What is as clear as Patrick (O’Connor) telegraphing his extramarital tryst with Tashi (Zendaya) to her husband Art (Faist) is where these buzzy stars are heading to next.
Zendaya has proven to be a box office selling point, successfully cementing her lead star status for the big screen with “Challengers” becoming director Luca Guadagnino’s highest opening film to date, surpassing Timothée Chalamet-led “Call Me By Your Name.

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to see Koba from the “Planet of the Apes” reboot film series in other movies? Neither had we here at IndieWire. That was until last week when @jbromovies posted this tweet to X, formerly known as Twitter.

Little did @jbromovies know what they were in for as what followed was an avalanche of photoshopped masterpieces that embed “Apes” character Koba into every piece of cinema imaginable. From “Challengers” to “The Lion King,” there are literally too many gems to choose from, but IndieWire has put together a collection of the eight best, each featuring a possible arc for how Koba could be inserted into the plot of the film.

Don’t be surprised if you see Demi Moore on the Croisette — like, a lot. The veteran actress is set to make a mark at the Cannes Film Festival this year with a film in competition and a packed schedule to match.
Moore stars in filmmaker Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance opposite Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid. Little is known about Fargeat’s sophomore feature — she debuted with 2017’s stylish Revenge — other than that it’s being referred to as a feminist take on body horror.
Cannes has given The Substance a late-night slot for its world premiere on Sunday, May 19, confirming a busy weekend for Moore. As previously announced, the actress will also take on the role of godmother for luxury jewelry house Chopard’s Trophée Chopard gala ceremony. The event, at Carlton Beach Club on May 17, will see rising star honors presented to Challengers star Mike Faist and...

Following Challengers, Luca Guadagnino will next direct After The Hunt, adding Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield to the cast.
Luca Guadagnino is flying high at the moment with the release of Challengers, the highly-anticipated love triangle tennis drama that has been scoring excellent reviews.
Guadagnino also has Queer on the way later this year too. That sounds equally promising given that Guadagnino is directing Daniel Craig in an adaptation of the William Burroughs book of the same name. That one shot last year and is set to release sometime this year (we think).
Looking beyond that, Guagagnino has a packed slate (more on that below) but when news broke last month that the director would be working with Julia Roberts on a project for Amazon, we suspected it might get fast-tracked and that seems to be the case.
According to Deadline, Andrew Garfield is in final talks to join After The Hunt,...

Jerry Seinfeld’s highly touted (and largely panned) feature directorial debut, “Unfrosted,” spent four days leading Netflix’s top 10 movie chart before another Netflix original, “Mother of the Bride” starring Brooke Shields, took the slot before the thematically appropriate weekend holiday.
“Unfrosted” led for just four days, with “Shrek” from 2001 leading midweek before the debut of “Bride.” The Dreamworks animated classic is still in second place, while Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts comedy dropped to fourth.
“Bride” comes from director Mark Waters. Perhaps best known for his “Freaky Friday” remake and the original “Mean Girls,” Waters went on to direct “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Vampire Academy,” and “Bad Santa 2.” In the new rom-com, Shields is a mom who realizes the father of her future son-in-law broke her heart decades ago.

The 2024 summer movie season has seen its fair share of surprises at the box office with highly anticipated projects like The Fall Guy, Challengers, and underrated films like Cocorico and Tarot. However, despite the buzz, not all films managed to witness global success. Take, for example, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s star-studded The Fall Guy, which unfortunately failed to multiply it’s box office collection, despite initial hype.

The annual celebration of Mom brightened things up at the summer box office, with the first movie to open over $50 million since March. Read on for the weekend box office report.
The hopes for the summer box office were almost dashed by the poor showing of season opener “The Fall Guy” last weekend, so fortunately, this weekend didn’t follow suit. Of course, the big winner for the weekend was 20th Century’s franchise sequel “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” which came into the weekend with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 80% Fresh, on par with “The Fall Guy.”
After making $6.6 million in Wednesday and Thursday previews and $22.2 million on Friday (including those previews), Disney has estimated “Apes” to open with $56.5 million, which is slightly higher than the $56.2 million opening for “War for the Planet of the Apes” in 2017.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (Disney) opened to $56.5 million, slightly above pre-opening projections, which is encouraging after “The Fall Guy” (Universal) last week. That’s a relief to theaters that hope summer releases meet their potential and buffer what is expected to be a major drop in revenues versus last year.
20th Century Fox released “Planet of the Apes” in 1968. For an old franchise, this is one that still has plenty of life: The “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” opening matched the last “Planet of the Apes” installment in 2017 (albeit when tickets cost 15 percent less). Speaking of old franchises, it also beat the $55 million opening of the 2021 Bond entry “No Time to Die.” Disappointing B Cinemascore aside, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” seems poised for a solid run.

The mighty Planet of the Apes franchise ruled again at the box office, with the movie earning a mighty $56.5 million domestically (according to ComScore), which puts it right in line with the previous openings of Rise of the Planet of the Apes ($54.8 million) and War for the Planet of the Apes ($56.2 million). Dawn of the Planet of the Apes made a lot more at $72 million, but times have changed, and now a $50 million-plus opening is cause for celebration at the House of Mouse, with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes the first solid box office win for Disney (who are releasing through 20th Century Films) in a while. This is much more than the $40 million we predicted earlier this week.

Updated: Primates ruled over the North American box office, as “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” collected $58.5 million in its first weekend of release.
That’s ahead of Sunday’s estimates of $56.8 million and enough to score the third-best opening of the year behind “Dune: Part Two” ($82 million) and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($80 million).
Inaugural sales for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” landed above early projections of $50 million to $55 million and towered over the nonexistent competition. “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” opened roughly even with two of the three prior installments in the rebooted franchise, landing behind only 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” (a series-best $72 million) and ahead of 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes” ($56.2 million) and 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” ($54.8 million).

Zendaya has become one of the most influential celebrities in Hollywood. She has established herself as a force to be reckoned with through her acting skills, being regarded as an extremely talented actress. While her professional life has certainly earned her a reputation, she is also well-known for her fashion sense.
A still from Euphoria
The actress is a respected figure in the world of fashion, always making a statement with the clothing she adorns. However, such acclaim did not come easy, and the actress had to work towards it for many years. Recently, a close friend, Law Roach, spoke about a time when she wasn’t as successful and what her fashion choices were then.
It would seem that five brands refused to work with her when she was still starting out, and Zendaya held a grudge.

Zendaya’s Stylist Calls of “Big Five” Designers Who Snubbed The Challengers Star. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The current fashion “it girl” Zendaya was reportedly snubbed by five prominent designers’ houses back in the day. In an interview with The Cutting Room Floor shared on Patreon Thursday, May 9, the “Challengers” actress’ long-time stylist, Law Roach, revealed she has yet to wear looks from five fashion houses on the red carpet after they refused to dress her early in her career.
Roach, who has styled the “Dune” star since she was 14, has continued to work with the actress despite announcing his retirement from celebrity styling over a year ago. Roach, who recently styled Zendaya for the Met Gala, where she walked the carpet in a stunning gown by Maison Margiela’s John Galliano, said it was a challenge to get certain luxury fashion houses to work with the star in the past...

Stylist Law Roach revealed on “The Cutting Room Floor” podcast that Zendaya still hasn’t worn looks from five fashion houses after they refused to dress her early in her career.
“I would write the big five. I would write Saint Laurent, Chanel, Gucci, Valentino, Dior, and they would all say, ‘No, try again next year. She’s too green. She’s not on our calendar,’” Roach said during the interview.
“I still have the receipts,” he continued. “By the time she got to [the cover of] American Vogue [in 2017], she still had never worn any of those designers. She still hasn’t.”
Roach, who has styled the “Challengers” and “Dune” star since she was 14, clarified that Zendaya has worn designs by the “big five” in editorial shoots, but never in public or during red carpet appearances.
“She still has never worn Dior on a carpet. She still has never worn Chanel on a carpet.

If traffic holds up, Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will succeed in opening to a solid $52 million to $56 million domestically for a first-place finish. Friday’s haul was $22.2 million, including $6.6 million in previews.
The Planet of the Apes franchise has always been a big player overseas, and the latest installment is opening around the globe timed to its North American release. Hopes are for an $80 million international launch.
The 20th Century and Disney movie is the second event pic of summer 2024 after Universal’s The Fall Guy, which left nerves frayed across Hollywood after opening to a disappointing $27.7 million over the May 5-7 frame. Tracking had suggested the action comedy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, would at least start off in the $32 million to $35 million range, which was already a subdued number.
