Lizzy Caplan, Christian Slater and Clark Duke are set to lead the cast of Netflix’s adult animated conspiracy theory comedy series Inside Job, from Gravity Falls writer Shion Takeuchi and creator Alex Hirsch. Takeuchi and Hirsch revealed the cast today during Netflix’s Adult Animation Studio Focus at the Annecy Animation Festival, which also includes Andrew Daly (Veep), Bobby Lee (MadTV), John Dimaggio (Futurama), Tisha Campbell (Empire) and Brett Gelman (Stranger Thigns).
Inside Job is an adult animated comedy about the shadow government – and the dysfunctional team whose daily grind is committing the world’s conspiracies. From convoluted coverups to secret societies to masked orgy etiquette, navigating office culture at Cognito Inc. can be tricky, especially for anti-social tech genius Reagan Ridley. Even in a workplace filled with reptilian shapeshifters and psychic mushrooms, she’s seen as the odd one out for believing the world could be a better place.

The Truth is Out There, and Lizzy Caplan, Christian Slater and Clark Duke will find it in Netflix’s “Inside Job,” a new conspiracy theory office comedy animated series from “Gravity Falls” writer Shion Takeuchi and creator Alex Hirsch, both of whom have development deals with the streamer.
In an announcement made during Netflix’s Adult Animation Studio Focus at the Annecy Animation Festival, Takeuchi and Hirsch also revealed a supporting cast of A-list voice acting and live-action talent including Andrew Daly, Bobby Lee, John Dimaggio, Tisha Campbell and conspiracy theory nut go-to Brett Gelman.
Not venturing too far from the sweet spot that Takeuchi and Hirsch perfected with “Gravity Falls,” “Inside Job” will play in the supernatural fringes of our world and feature creatures, narratives and visuals ripped right from the conspiracy tabloid headlines of supermarket checkout lanes.

“Collective” made history in the 2021 Oscar nominations when it made the cut for Best International Feature and Best Documentary Feature. It’s only the second film ever to earn nominations in both of those categories, following Macedonia’s “Honeyland,” which achieved that unprecedented double play just last year. But “Honeyland” didn’t win either category: International Feature went to “Parasite,” while Documentary Feature was awarded to “American Factory.” So could “Collective” make further history by winning both awards?

When “My Octopus Teacher” won the Producers Guild Award for Best Documentary on March 24, I started to wonder if that clears the path to it winning the Oscar. It’s an emotional, heartwarming film about nature, and feel-good movies sometimes have an advantage over investigative docs and grittier subjects.
First, it must be acknowledged that the PGA Award often veers wildly from the Oscars. In fact, the last three PGA winners weren’t even nominated by the motion picture academy: “Jane” (2017), “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” (2018) and “Apollo 11” (2019). But when an Oscar nominee does win PGA, it tends to win the Oscar too, like “Searching for Sugar Man” (2012), “Amy” (2015) and “O.J.: Made in America” (2016) in the last decade. The last time the PGA winner had an Oscar nomination but lost it was Michael Moore‘s “Sicko” (2007), and that was 13 years ago.

The Robinhood effect has now extended to the movies. Days after the Reddit-led consumer buys of struggling GameStop, AMC Theaters, and other stocks, two of the most successful recent films about Wall Street manipulation are soaring high in home rentals.
Apple TV, usually the quickest to detect trends and spot immediate response, currently has Adam McKay’s 2015 “The Big Short” at #3 and Martin Scorsese’s 2013 “The Wolf of Wall Street” at #4. That places them ahead of all but two current releases (“Tenet” and “Greenland”) as the most-ordered titles.
This rapid response parallels what happened last February when Steven Soderbergh’s 2011 “Contagion” flew high with its story that paralleled the then-emergent Covid-19 pandemic.
“The Big Short” (based on Michael Lewis’ non-fiction account of Wall Street firms reaping profits from the 2008 financial collapset) and “Wolf of Wall Street” (based on the career of broker Jordan Belford) clicked with the public a...

The Oscars are no stranger to current events when it comes to Best Documentary Feature. The award has often gone to films that address pressing social or political issues, and in 2020 you could hardly get more pressing than the Covid-19 pandemic, which has affected just about every industry on Earth, including the film business. “76 Days” takes an especially close look at the pandemic, chronicling the weeks when the disease locked down Wuhan, China, the city where the novel coronavirus was thought to have originated. Voters may be impressed by that journalistic and cinematic achievement, especially when the subject matter hits so close to home.
Over the last 20 years the motion picture academy has awarded several nonfiction films that spoke to pressing societal concerns, from gun violence (2002’s “Bowling for Columbine”) to climate change (2006’s “An Inconvenient Truth”), torture (2007’s “Taxi to the Dark Side”), the Great Recession (2010’s “Inside Job...

Oscar winner Alex Gibney‘s new documentary “Totally Under Control,” which he wrote and co-directed with Ophelia Harutyunyan and Suzanne Hillinger, is already available to rent on demand via streaming services, but will be more widely available through Hulu beginning Tuesday, Oct. 20. The film is another addition to the sea of information about how the United States government mishandled the initial response to the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic. In that regard, it’s not as much an enlightening documentary as a timely one, seemingly aimed at giving voice to scientists and public health experts who appear in the film to narrate all the ways the Trump administration’s response failed the country.

“Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution” debuted this past January at the Sundance Film Festival, earning a heap of critical raves and the coveted Audience Award. The film then debuted on Netflix in March and could be the latest Netflix doc to contend for Best Documentary Feature at the Oscars. Netflix has done very well in that category with a total of nine nominations in six years, including wins for 2017’s “Icarus” and last year‘s “American Factory.” The latter film shares a little something in common with “Crip Camp”: both are executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama. Could a Netflix-Obama pairing go two-for-two at the Oscars?

Sometimes the biggest catastrophes leave no mark. The 1918 pandemic killed about 675,000 Americans, but left hardly a ripple in the cultural consciousness. It was forgotten by many until the outbreak of Covid. However, given the number of Covid-related projects already in the works, this is one disaster that feels like it will be fully memorialized. One would think, given the reams of articles and many topical movies on the Great Recession, that the crisis had been appropriately covered for future generations.

Greenwich Entertainment has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Adam Bolt’s Human Nature, the feature documentary that premiered at this year’s SXSW and was just nominated for a pair of Ida Documentary Awards. The deal comes as the film screens next month at Doc NYC ahead of a February 7, 2020 theatrical release.
Human Nature, the directorial debut of Bolt, is about the gene-editing breakthrough Crispr, which at its essence provides unprecedented control over the basic building blocks of life, opening the door to curing diseases, reshaping the biosphere, and designing our own children. The doc explores the biotech innovation’s implications via the scientists who discovered it, the families it’s affecting, and the bioengineers testing its limits.
Sarah Goodwin and Meredith DeSalazar are producers, and Elliot Kirschner, Greg Boustead and Dan Rather are executive producers.

A documentary about the McCarthy-era lawyer who eventually became Donald Trump’s mentor, a story about a corrupt billionaire prime minister, a corporate retreat that might or might not end in casual cannibalism, a dramatic thriller about the gig economy and a light-hearted Indian romance about luck and cricket — the films on deck for this weekend’s Specialty box office are terrifying, funny and have a dash of heart. Class will be in session on the summer solstice this year. Netflix has set Friday, June 21, for the global premiere of Mr. Iglesias, a multi-camera comedy starring stand-up favorite Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias. Check out the key art below.
He plays Gabe, a good-natured public high school teacher who works at his alma mater. Gabe takes on teaching gifted but misfit kids to not only save them from being “counseled out” by a bully bureaucrat assistant principal (Oscar Nuñez) but also to help them unlock their full potential. Sherri Shepherd, Jacob Vargas, Maggie Geha, Richard Gant, Cree Cicchino and Fabrizio Guido co-star.
“A lot of my fans ask me what I would be if I wasn’t a stand-up comic,” Iglesias said. “I tell them a history teacher because I love history. So it’s great that in this sitcom, I have the opportunity to live out my alternate reality had I not become Fluffy.

The streamer has put out a series order of “Inside Job” from “Gravity Falls” and “Disenchantment” writer Shion Takeuchi. The show will be the first series Takeuchi produces under her recently-signed overall deal with Netflix.
The 20-episode adult animated series will be produced at Netflix Animation and is described as a workplace comedy set in the shadow government, where every conspiracy theory — from the Illuminati to Reptoids — is true, and one woman struggles to keep the chaos under wraps.
“Gravity Falls” creator Alex Hirsch will co-executive produce the show.

Asian filmmakers made history at the Oscars this year when the nominations for Best Documentary Feature were announced. There are five directors and producers of Asian descent in the category this year representing three different films, far more than ever before. In fact, there has never been more than one film in any given year with an Asian nominee.
“Free Solo” is directed by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, who are both of Chinese heritage. The film follows rock climber Alex Honnold as he attempts an unassisted ascent up the El Capitan vertical rock formation. The film just won Best Documentary at the BAFTAs, and it’s now the front-runner at the Oscars with leading odds of 7/2, moving just ahead of “Rbg.” Chin and Vasarhelyi would be just the second and third winners of Chinese descent, following Freida Lee Mock for “Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision” (1994).

Exclusive: Here’s some compelling first footage of Oscar winner Charles Ferguson’s (Inside Job) well-received, all-encompassing documentary Watergate, which gets its European premiere at the Berlin Film Festival.
The patient compendium draws from 3400 hours of audio tapes, archival footage and declassified documents to weave a detailed picture of the infamous Watergate scandal which led to the downfall of U.S. president Richard Nixon. Those featured include Carl Bernstein, Bob Woodward and John Dean.
Numerous current day parallels are elegantly understated but it’s hard not to look at this footage and immediately think of the endless media storm surrounding Trump and the countless investigations against those close to him.
Dogwoof handles international sales on the 260-minute film, which is written and directed Ferguson. The company will also release in the UK. Producers are Representational Pictures with History Films. Pic got its debut at Telluride.

After making a major splash with 2010's Oscar-winning documentary Inside Job, tech millionaire turned filmmaker Charles Ferguson appeared to disappear, at least in the eyes of anyone eager to see what was next for the man who had dissected the 2008 global financial crisis with such surgical precision.

The Berlin Film Festival has revealed the first wave of titles for its competition lineup, including new films from François Ozon, Marie Kreutzer, Denis Côté and Fatih Akin. Charles Ferguson’s Watergate documentary is among the Berlinale Special titles.
The first nine Competition and Berlinale Special films were revealed today, alongside the previously announced opening film, The Kindness of Strangers by Lone Scherfig.
Festival favourites Akin (In The Fade) and Ozon (In The House) return with German-language thriller The Golden Glove and French-language drama By The Grace Of God, respectively. The former follows a serial killer who strikes fear in the hearts of residents of Hamburg during the early 1970s. The latter looks at a real-life case of sexual abuses allegedly committed by a French priest in the late 1980s. Oscar-winner Ferguson (Inside Job) will present anticipated 260-minute feature doc Watergate, which is sure to draw plenty of contemporary parallels.

Roger Ailes was the chairman and CEO of Fox News from 1996 until stepping down in 2016 amid sexual harassment scandals. As the man behind TV’s Republican messaging machine and behind many Republican politicians themselves, he reshaped American politics throughout the last half-century. Now he’s entering a whole other kind of campaign: “Divide and Conquer: The Story of Roger Ailes,” the documentary that examines his life’s work, is a contender for an Oscar during a politically fraught year were he may actually end up facing an ideological opponent, the notorious “Rbg.” Watch the trailer for the film above.

Five years ago when Oscar-nominated documentarian Charles Ferguson (“Inside Job”) started deeply researching the 1972 Watergate break-in, he was chasing a documentary thriller that would be fun to watch. A & E and History were on board. But as the political climate dramatically transformed, he wound up with a more sober narrative, which debuted at the fall festivals ahead of an October theatrical run of the four-hour version. On television, the series airs in six one-hour episodes playing over three nights, starting November 2 as part of “History 100,” a History Channel documentary series comprised of 100 films focused on compelling historical events of the last 100 years.
When A&E commissioned “Watergate,” everyone expected Hillary Clinton was going to be president. “We had no idea how timely it would be,” said A&E chief Molly Thompson. “That’s the way things played out. Watching a cut of the film feels like watching the nightly news.

Sen. John McCain knew his end was near when he spoke to “Watergate” director Charles Ferguson for Ferguson’s documentary about “how we learned to stop an out-of-control president.” The director believes McCain wanted to send a message about President Trump.
You can listen to our “Shoot This Now” podcast with Ferguson (who also directed the Oscar-winning “Inside Job”) on Apple or right here:
We asked Ferguson if he thought McCain was trying to send a message, through the documentary, that you can take down an out-of-control president.
“Absolutely. No question. I very deliberately did not ask him about Donald Trump,” Ferguson said. “For similar reasons, the name Donald Trump does not appear anywhere in the film. There’s no direct allusion to our current situation. But it was very obviously on Mr. McCain’s mind.”
Ferguson’s four-hour film enjoyed an Oscar qualifying run in theaters before its debut tonight on the History Channel.

Here’s how it’s always worked, the traditional go-to method for diving down the barrel of the smoking gun: You film a close-up of reel-to-reel tapes, the rotating wheels moving the magnetic strips through the player’s gates. Maybe you focus on the spindles in the middle of the cassette, turning and turning, as well. You play the grainy, tinny voices of men over the soundtrack, as they discuss payments, political cover-ups, the media and, courtesy of one particularly gruff-sounding gentleman, “the goddamned Jews.” This is how the notorious...

Documentarian Charles Ferguson won an Oscar for “Inside Job,” a 2010 film that examined the system-wide corruption at the root of the then-ongoing financial crisis. And his new film, “Watergate – Or: How We Learned to Stop an Out of Control President,” which screened at Telluride Aug. 31 in advance of a theatrical release Oct. 12 and a television bow on History Nov. 2, ratifies that he is a director adept at explaining the ties between various players in the midst of complex crises. The lengthy documentary, presented in two parts with an intermission, provides a worthwhile primer for those who are unschooled in the Nixon presidency, the chaos it unleashed, and how the law eventually brought it to heel.

There’s a bit of a shock when the late John McCain shows up as an interview subject toward the end of Charles Ferguson’s “Watergate,” a comprehensive but frustratingly inessential retelling of how a crime blossomed into a constitutional crisis (you might have read about it). The senator isn’t on screen for long, but it only takes him a few seconds to summarize a profound truth at the heart of this epic documentary: “One thing we politicians are very good at,” he says with a smile, “is kidding ourselves about how well-liked we are.” McCain is talking about Richard Nixon, but — after four hours of watching this film painstakingly connect the dots between then and now — it’s obvious that he’s not only talking about Richard Nixon. Nobody is.
