Heroism and self-destruction

'Failure Drill' features one of the series' finest shootouts (not that the show relies on them), chiefly because it makes exceptional use of the show's documentary style camera-work; ad it's Lydia in full hero cop mode. Prior to that, she and Josie are saddled with a case of a murdered mother and the broken home she leaves behind. It's decent material, but tends to drag on.

What really makes this episode hard to stomach is its portrait of Officer Cooper spiraling out. The man's literally useless, zonked out on painkillers with his trainee left to handle the day's watch. It's hard to fathom his situation getting any worse - it will - but it's not easy to watch his life heading towards certain doom.

Yet it's undeniably engrossing.

One of the Best...****

Warning: Spoilers
Terrific next-to-the-last show of the current season. It really summed up what the police are and have to go through in their daily lives directly on the job.

We see the effects of the pills taken by the drug-addicted officer to supposedly cure his back pain. We see the dangers of the job when Regina King's partner takes a bullet during a wild factory shootout and we also see the idea that the social service agencies aren't really the best place to put brothers and sisters into because they will invariably be separated from each other. We see the oldest of 3 children lie to the authorities regarding the culpability of their father in the murder of their mother so that the children will not be divided up. Regina King steals the episode by her approach to the older son to come clean regarding his father. It is absolutely heartbreaking.

I hope this worthwhile series continues.
