For a while now there's been talk that 20th Century Fox is developing a Zorro reboot which would take the masked crusader from the past into the not-so-distant post-apocalyptic future. Last anyone heard of the project titled Zorro Reborn, it had passed through a few writers and landed with Gael García Bernal attached as Zorro and Ricardo de Montreuil, the director of the much buzzed about The Raven (see the short).
Turns out that in early 2012, de Montreuil shot a concept trailer in South Africa with the help of Peruvian actor Jason Day as Zorro. Jon Voight doing voice over work and Vancouver based Central doing the VFX work. The entire thing reportedly cost under $100,000 and it looks like they used every penny [Continued ...]...

Today, we have the concept art and a pitch trailer that director Ricardo de Montreuil (The Raven) put together in an attempt to convince the studio that the movie is worth making. The video features Jason Day as Zorro, with Jon Voight providing the voice-over. Check everything out below. In the movie, a meteorite crashes into Earth in the future and destroys much of California and Mexico leaving them as a desert. After the dust settles, that same meteorite is discovered to be a supreme source of energy, which a new hostile corporation assumes. People begin flocking to New San Diego for work only to find out they're now being oppressed. It is then that Alejandro Fox, a descendant of Don Diego de la Vega,...

Studio to return Rudyard Kipling's tale to big screen – at same time as Warner Bros plans rival adaptation
Disney is planning a live-action take on The Jungle Book, Rudyard Kipling's iconic collection of fables that inspired the classic animation of the same name.
The project is the second film based on Kipling's 1894 collection – which is out of copyright – to be announced. Rival studio Warner Bros is also planning a version, with Harry Potter's Steve Kloves working on the screenplay.
Variety reports that Disney's version will once again centre on the "mancub" Mowgli, who is raised by wolves in the Indian jungle. His friends include a bear, Baloo, and a panther, Bagheera, while the vicious tiger Shere Khan is among his enemies. Mowgli's story was just one of a number of morally toned fables in Kipling's tome, but Disney will overlook other chapters such as the story of heroic...

We had reported back in April that Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) had replaced Mark Walhberg (Ted) as the lead. According to Deadline Gerard Butler (Gamer) is now in “deep talks” to play the lead. I enjoy everything he does, so I consider this move an upgrade for sure.

Despite the resurfaced uncertainty over Liam's personal life, he has plenty of professional business to focus on. He heated up the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday during his presentation...

With Gael Garcia Bernal taking the lead role in 20th Century Fox's reboot Zorro Reborn, the studio is now sorting out a director.
Variety reports that Peruvian filmmaker Ricardo de Montreuil (pictured) is in line to take on the project, as he will direct a screen test for Bernal. But nothing is yet signed and sealed.
De Montreuil attracted Hollywood's attention with his short film The Raven - a sci-fi thriller set in a future Los Angeles - which is to be turned into a full-length feature by Universal.
The new Zorro film is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland and portrays the title character as a masked vigilante bent on getting revenge against an evil tyrant and his gang of mercenaries.
It's not just Zorro that's coming back. We're also getting more from Chronicle, the found footage flick about three high-school students whose lives spin out of control after they gain superpowers.

Fox's post apocalyptic take on the Zorro legend, Zorro Reborn, might just have found its director...
We recently reported that Gael Garcia Bernal had been cast as the lead in Zorro Reborn, a post apocalyptic take on the legend of the character. The film is based on a script that was originally written by Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy (Harker) and later rewritten by Glenn Gers (Fracture).
In addition to the post apocalyptic setting, Zorro Reborn will distance itself further from the traditions of the legend by not setting the action in either California or Mexico.
When we brought you the news of Bernal’s casting, Fox was still without a director. But now? It appears it has a favourite in Peruvian director Ricardo de Montreuil, whose short film The Raven has impressed many an exec of late. The short can be found on YouTube if you want to see what caught Fox’s eye.

Gael Garcia Bernal is prepping for a screen test that will determine whether or not he'll star in 20th Century Fox's new action-adventure epic Zorro Reborn. Yet this test may also serve as an audition for the film's possible helmer Ricardo de Montreuil. Variety reveals the Peruvian filmmaker, who first earned Hollywood's notice in 2010 with his stunning sci-fi short The Raven, will direct Bernal in the screen test. Zorro Reborn's producers haven't yet signed someone to helm, so while there is no deal in place at present, this test could mean they are considering de Montreuil. For Zorro Reborn, Fox is looking to create a extreme reinvention of the iconic character, positing him into a futuristic setting where his vigilante efforts will battle against a more technologically advanced villain than a previous Zorros. With Gael García Bernal pegged to lead Fox’s Zorro reboot, Zorro Reborn, the search for a director is starting to zero in on Ricardo de Montreuil. Though probably not a name you have any reaction to at first glance, he was, at one point, almost in the Hollywood game; Universal and Mark Wahlberg took a liking to his six-minute short, The Raven, back in December of 2010. Though it started as a very insider thing, The Black List has recently become more popular and mainstream. For those who may not know, it's an annual list of the year's best unproduced screenplays as voted on by about 300 Hollywood development executives and high-level assistants. We recently posted the 2010 list [1] and looking back at some previous years (2007 [2], 2008 [3], 2009 [4]), films such as Recount, The Beaver and The Social Network all sat near the top of the list. Skim over any of them and you'll see names of films that are out, are coming out and more. It's a big deal. This year, a new Black List of sorts has come out. Dubbed Viewfinder, it's supposed to do for directors what The Black List did for screenwriters. Viewfinder is a compilation of "the top commercials, shorts and/or music videos of 2010." Several of the directors on the list already have deals or are in production on films.

Mark Wahlberg has signed on to produce and star in a sci-fi thriller called “The Raven”, which will be written and directed by Ricardo De Montreuil based on his short film of the same name (you can see that short film below). If the movie version follows the plot of the short, it will find Wahlberg playing Chris Black, a young man who “possesses a power that could lead to the destruction of the current regime, and they will stop at nothing to destroy him. The chase is on as Chris runs for his life in this sci-fi thriller set in an alternate and futuristic Los Angeles.” Basically, the short is 5 minutes of Black aka The Raven running from automated police drones armed with chainguns and stalking At-at-type walkers that will, apparently, shoot anything in their way. The whole thing is watched and orchestrated by a floating police ship above the city.

Earlier today there was official news that Mark Wahlberg had signed on to star and produce a big-screen version of Richardo de Montriuil’s short film “The Raven”. Now here’s all six minutes of that short film (well, five minutes and a minute of closing credits, anyway) that was apparently so good Hollywood decided to give de Montriuil some serious mullah to make a big-screen version. The short apparently costed only $5,000 to make, with a script by Ricardo de Montreuil and Antonio Perez. Chris Black possesses a power that could lead to the destruction of the current regime, and they will stop at nothing to destroy him. The chase is on as Chris runs for his life in this sci-fi thriller set in an alternate and futuristic Los Angeles. I have to admit, de Montriuil clearly has a great eye for cinematic visuals. Aesthetically speaking, the short also kinda...

Shia Labeouf and Tom Hardy are teaming up for the Prohibition-era dramatic thriller The Wettest County in the World, from director John Hillcoat (The Road), reports 24 Frames. Nick Cave wrote the screenplay, based on a novel from Matt Bondurant about a family of Prohibition-era bootleggers, and crimes committed by and against them.
Universal has picked up rights to Ricardo de Montreuil’s short film The Raven, (I guess he has something against Crows) which is being developed as a starring vehicle for Mark Wahlberg, who is also attached to produce, reports Heat Vision. Mark Wahlberg and his business partner Steve Levinson are set to produce a feature-length version of Ricardo de Montreuil’s sci-fi short The Raven, following Universal’s acquisition of the rights to the project, according to reports. Wahlberg is said to star, as well.
The studio had been eyeing the project for several months, but negotiations were only recently solidified.
The Raven, a six-minute thriller that was reportedly made for a mere $5,000 by the Peruvian director, follows a man with supernatural powers as he is chased in the future through the streets of downtown Los Angeles. (Video embedded below).

First linked six months ago by Latino Review, Mark Wahlberg has now apparently locked down a deal with Universal to produce and possibly star in a feature length adaptation of Ricardo De Montreuil's short film "The Raven" reports Heat Vision.
The short follows a man with powers being chased around Los Angeles by police drones, which are co-ordinated by a huge ship above the city. Wahlberg’s partner Steve Levinson is producing from a script by Justin Marks.
de Montreuil was originally slated to direct, but the filmmaker recently signed onto "Lowriders" for producer Brian Grazer. That project, written by Cheo Hodari Coke, involves a young man becoming a street cruiser success story who must take on the "local badass".
Schedules are presently unsure on either project, and Wahlberg is committed to a few other films including Seth MacFarlane's "Ted" and David O. Russell's "Uncharted".

Though he'll be in front of the camera angering some video game fans in David O. Russell's adaptation of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, it looks like Mark Wahlberg will be busy behind the scenes elsewhere by producing a film inspired by a much buzzed about short film. Heat Vision reports the actor will produce a feature length version of Ricardo De Montreuil's short film The Raven (which you can watch in its entirety right here). The story follows follows Chris Black, a man who possesses a power that could lead to the destruction of a robotic regime of police in an alternate, futuristic Los Angeles, and they will stop at nothing to destroy him. Latino Review first called attention to the short and Hollywood's interest in the filmmaker and the story back in April, and it's taken this long for a deal to finally come through. Apparently the project...

He might not be The Crow, but now Mark Wahlberg has set his sights on a bird of a different feather: The Raven. The actor has worked with Universal to lock in the rights to Ricardo De Montreuil’s sci-fi short film. The Raven, one of several shorts that struck Hollywood earlier in the year, follows a young man being chased around downtown Los Angeles by robot police drones, with a big ship coordinating the effort to catch him. You can take a look at it on YouTube. After a long negotiation that fell apart at least once, Wahlberg is producing and developing the eventual film as a possible starring role. Writer Justin Marks (whose sole produced film credit to date is Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, but who has been attached to a host of high profile genre projects from Super Max to the new 20,000 Leagues Under the...

Indie Sci-Fi has produced some killer stuff over the past few years, just take a look at films like the Neill Blomkamp directed District 9 or the upcoming big-screen adaptation of Ricardo de Montreuil‘s short film, The Raven which was recently picked up by Universal Pictures and will be produced by, and star Mark Wahlberg.

Check out the trailer, official synopsis, poster and premiere details below. If you’re lucky enough to be in New York or Los Angeles, I encourage you to attend one of the premieres… though I probably won’t have to do much encouraging after you see the trailer for yourself.

Justin Marks had been at Wme. He's writing the Universal pic The Raven, a feature based on the 6-minute short film by Ricardo de Montreuil. Mark Wahlberg is attached. Marks also adapted the DC Comics series Super Max aka The Green Arrow for David Goyer, and Shadow of the Colossus for Sony Pictures Entertainment. Mark Wahlberg will produce and star in an expanded version of Ricardo de Montreuil‘s short film, The Raven for Universal Pictures. The original sci-fi short was directed by Montreuil and shot on the Red camera in Los Angeles with a budget of $5,000 dollars and was wildly popular when it hit the internet back in April (Check it out below).
The Raven tells the story of Chris Black, who “possesses a power that could lead to the destruction of the current regime, and they will stop at nothing to destroy him. The chase is on as Chris runs for his life in this sci-fi thriller set in an alternate and futuristic Los Angeles.”

Cinematical is reporting that Ricardo de Montreuil‘s short film The Raven will be adapted into a feature length film to be distributed by Universal. The 6-minute short essentially revolves around a single chase scene, so the potential freedoms for screenwriter Justin Marks are infinite.
As of right now, the basic storyline is about Chris Black, a man also called The Raven, who is on the run from police drones and other types of science-fiction machinery. The reason he is being chased is unknown, although I assume it will be explored in Marks‘ script.
Montreuil will stay on to direct, while Mark Wahlberg will produce and star in the lead role. Wahlberg will soon appear in the potential Oscar contender The Fighter, so The Raven is obviously a big change of pace for him. Nevertheless, this short-to-feature adaptation is the same process that District 9 took to end up earning several Oscar nominations.

A few months ago we shared a short film titled The Raven, which at the time was making the rounds at studios potentially interested in turning the work into a feature. This has of course been a trend this year, in part thanks to the success of District 9. Now Latino Review reports that the project, which will retain Peruvian director Ricardo de Montreuil at the helm, has found a home at Universal. A script is currently being written by Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li) and Mark Wahlberg is confirmed to be producing and starring in the adaptation.
If it's a straight lift and stretch from the short, Wahlberg would presumably play Chris Black, aka The Raven, a telekinetic man on the run for some unknown reason and pursued by police drones that resemble similar flying machines from Back the Future II and the Terminator films.

Looks like yet another flashy short film has caught the attention of some studio folks in Hollywood, and is now on its way to getting a feature-length adaptation... much like other recent YouTube hits Panic Attack! [1], Pixels [2] and The Gift [3]. Everyone wants to find the next District 9 right now, and apparently Universal Pictures believes that Ricardo de Montreuil could be the next Neill Blomkamp. According to Latino Review [4], Montreuil's $5000 short film The Raven is currently being set up as a potential starring vehicle for Mark Wahlberg. Hey, beggars can't be choosers! The short film doesn't have much of a story, but it appears to be set in a dystopian future version of Los Angeles where robots are pursuing a young man named Chris Black, who possesses some sort of telekinetic ability. Much like Carl Erick Rinsch's The Gift, it's basically one long chase scene that is used to showcase some cool special effects.

The New Commandments of Hollywood, Number Four: “Rip up your business cards, for that is old-school like American Psycho. Grab thee instead a camera and find a shit-hot effects studio. Then make thee a short that will set the internet aflame.” Following from Federico Alvarez’ Panic Attack and Carl Rinsch’s The Gift, there’s now news on Ricardo de Montreuil’s The Raven, which is getting the feature treatment.

Short films are going to be the next source of Hollywood inspiration, it appears. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of low-budget, science fiction-themed short films scattered about -- on the web, on Youtube, in film festivals, you name it. Hollywood, ever vigilant for new ideas to seize and develop, is watching and the newest one to get picked up appears to be The Raven.
According to Latino Review, Universal Pictures has picked up the rights to Ricardo de Montreuil's short film The Raven, about a young man with strange powers on the run from the government. Mark Wahlberg is apparently in talks to star and produce, and in a nifty little success story, Montreuil himself may direct the full-length feature. Filmed for $5000 and shot over the course of a weekend in Los Angeles, The Raven will be fleshed out into a full story by Justin Marks.

As District 9 illustrated last year, it’s an exciting time for young, technically gifted film-makers to use short films/test reels as a way of showcasing their talents and nabbing that highly sought-after Hollywood feature deal.
I remember seeing an impressive short called The Raven (embedded below) by filmmaker Ricardo de Montreuil a few months back and thinking then that it would only be a matter of time before I’d hear from him again.
Well, here the news!
Latino Review has just confirmed that Mark Wahlberg is in talks to produce and take the leading role in the feature-length version at Universal. Montreuil is still on board as director and up-and-coming scribe Justin Marks will pen the script.
This is extremely encouraging news and proves that studios are not only willing to sit up and take notice of fresh and untested talent, but that they are also happy...

Earlier this morning Latino Review posted a story that Mark Wahlberg was in talks to produce and star in a feature-length adaptation of the Ricardo de Montreuil short film The Raven which blew up online back in April. Just my luck, I caught the story just as I was leaving for a press junket for The Other Guys, where I would have the chance to talk to Wahlberg not only about The Raven, but his other future projects as well. It turns out that Latino Review's info was accurate, however, Wahlberg is not in talks to adapt the short as a feature but rather has been developing it for about a month now. The actor told me that the plan is for him to both serve as producer and star in the film as Chris Black, a man living in a futuristic Los Angeles who wakes up one morning to...
