Edmond O'Brien: Johnny Midnight

Quotes

  • [first lines]

Aki : [Aki enters and finds Johnny dressed in top hat, white tie, and tails]  Now that is some set of threads. Like, it dazzles me, dad.

Johnny Midnight : Frankly, old boy, it rather dazzles me, too.

Kate Gordon : [a figure in a trenchcoat and slouched hat enters]  No funny moves, bud! You, Midnight, you know why I'm here. There's just one thing I want from you.

Johnny Midnight : Kate! And what could that be?

Kate Gordon : Your orange juice or your life.

  • Johnny Midnight : [Narration]  Kate was in love. She was on the way to her wedding, and she was in a state of high-speed happiness. The manufacturer of her sports car claimed it would do 140. It could. Kate's home was smaller than the New York Public Library, but it probably had more bathrooms. And Danny Barrett had been dragged up in an East Side slum. He was reaching way up, but Danny was bright, tough, and ambitious. Together, he and Kate made an explosive mixture. But they could also make a happy marriage. I hoped they would, because I was fond of them both.

  • Johnny Midnight : Fred, you're a social liability. You're the laziest man I know and you're totally irresponsible. But I can't believe you'd knife a woman to death.

Uncle Fred : I don't believe you, Johnny. Why this sudden switch back to my side?

Johnny Midnight : Well, you handle a knife like a canoe paddle. Whoever killed Lila used the knife expertly.

Uncle Fred : Well, is that the kind of evidence you're gonna hand Chief Talman, Johnny? He'll laugh in your face.

Johnny Midnight : You're wrong two ways. He won't be laughing. And it won't be my face.
