Indie production shop The Exchange, also known as Bos Entertainment, is suing Wonderfilm for breach of contract related to their partnership on Harvey Keitel and Tyrese Gibson-starrer Hard Matter, which appears to be stuck in limbo for failure to pay a visual effects vendor.
The lawsuit filed on Tuesday in California federal court arrives in the wake of an investor in the movie — which was allegedly led to believe it was financing a Mel Gibson-led film only for the project to never get finished due to a lack of funds — accusing Wonderfilm of swindling it out of more than $5 million. The Exchange, in turn, is looking to distance itself from the company and Wonderfilm principals Bret Saxon and Jeff Bowler. It claims that it had no part in the alleged scheme and that it was defrauded since Wonderfilm failed to secure insurance for the movie.

Indie production shop Wonderfilm has been sued for fraud and breach of contract in a lawsuit accusing the company and its directors of swindling an investor — which was allegedly led to believe it was financing a Mel Gibson-led film only for the project to never get finished due to a lack of funds — out of more than $5 million.
Investor Gridiron Productions alleges fraud in a lawsuit claiming Wonderfilm principals Bret Saxon and Jeff Bowler changed the terms of contracts to pay themselves exorbitant salaries on top of exaggerating the budget for the movie, with the goal of making it for less and pocketing the difference.
The lawsuit filed on Sept. 12 in California federal court mirrors claims made in other legal actions against Saxon. According to a review of court records by The Hollywood Reporter, he was named in 2011 in a series of complaints accusing him of operating a “ponzi scheme,...

Howard Hesseman, a prolific character actor who became a beloved TV mainstay through his roles on sitcoms “Wkrp in Cincinnati” and “Head of the Class,” died Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Los Angeles of complications from colon surgery he had undergone last summer. He was 81 years old.
Hesseman’s death was confirmed to Variety by his longtime rep Robbie Kass.
“Howard was a groundbreaking talent and lifelong friend whose kindness and generosity was equaled by his influence and admiration to generations of actors and improvisational comedy throughout the world,” Kass stated.
Born in Lebanon, Ore. on Feb. 27, 1940, Hesseman became a counterculture favorite as he ascended into the world of entertainment in the late 1960’s. Demi Moore very quickly revealed the “worst movie” she’s ever been in Wednesday on James Corden’s “Late Late Show.” Anything to avoid eating a 1,000-year-old egg, we suppose.
“Actually that one is very easy,” she told the CBS late-night personality during a game of his “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” game. “It’s ‘Parasite’ in 3-D.”
Rotten Tomatoes would agree. “Parasite,” Moore’s second-ever movie, has an 11% critics’ rating there. The audience has the 1982 film at 13%.

Interestingly enough, “Parasite” is not Moore’s lowest-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes. Her “Wild Oats” from 2016 has a perfectly horrible 0% score. To be fair to Moore and the movie, that one only counts five critical reviews, and the audience has it at 35%.

Welcome to Career Watch, a vocational checkup of top actors and directors, and those who hope to get there. In this edition we take on Jessica Lange, who’s at the height of powers at age 68, revealing depths of emotion as fading Golden Age star Joan Crawford in FX’s mighty Emmy contender “Feud: Bette and Joan.”
Bottom Line: Jessica Lange has matured from a gorgeous movie ingenue to a theater and screen character actress with extraordinary range who keeps surprising audiences with what she can make them feel.
Career Peaks: From the start, Lange impressed people even when she was in the clutches of the Dino De Laurentiis incarnation of “Kong Kong.” She followed that up with her performance as a sexy waitress who seduces Jack Nicholson on a kitchen table in Bob Rafelson’s “The Postman Always Rings Twice” (1981) and with a weighty dramatic role as the depressed...

Wild Oats, starring Demi Moore, Jessica Lange and Shirley MacLaine, may have been in 100 theaters this past year, but Sony Pictures is justifying a failure to pay a $950,000 license fee by alleging that the producer breached contract by having the film debut on Lifetime Television.
The film about a woman who accidentally receives a Social Security check for a million dollars is itself the subject of a million-dollar fight. In February, Bahamas-based financier Impex Enterprises sued in California federal court over what Sony allegedly owes.
In turn, Sony has now filed a third party complaint against Wild Pictures LLC.

Sony is being sued by one of the financiers of Wild Oats for failing to timely pay nearly $1 million, according to a complaint filed Wednesday in California federal court.
Impex Enterprises, a Bahamas-based financier on the film, is suing Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions for breach of contract.

Ensemble in a Drama Series
“Downton Abbey”
“Game of Thrones”
“House of Cards”
“This Is Us”
“Westworld”
Spoiler: “Better Call Saul”
It’s time for a change. No, not with “Downton Abbey.” That three-time ensemble winner (including the last two) isn’t going anywhere in its final season, but with “Mad Men” no longer eligible and “Homeland” feeling shaky, there could be two new ensembles looking to take home a collective trophy in 2017. “Mr. Robot” earned some love last year for Rami Malek, but Christian Slater’s snub spells trouble for the show overall. “Better Call Saul” is similarly hampered by a lack of past recognition outside its lead, though its prestige factor could push it through. That being said, we’re betting the hot drama of the fall season, “This Is Us,” will ride a wave of love for Sterling K. Brown, Milo Ventimiglia, and Mandy Moore to a nomination here.

Reaching back over a half century, “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years” thrived with a contemporary mix of theaters and Hulu home viewing availability to become a major grossing event this weekend. The Ron Howard concert doc led an otherwise bleak set of new openers as audiences wait for top titles from festivals to reach theaters.
Included among the openers are two films from directors of Best Picture winners that got little attention: “Mr. Church” from Bruce Beresford (“Driving Miss Daisy”) and “Finding Altamira” from Hugh Hudson (“Chariots of Fire”). Fortunes take different paths. Ron Howard directed “Eight Days a Week,” while Clint Eastwood and Oliver Stone are nabbing attention with “Sully” at #1 and “Snowden” farther back in the pack, respectively.

As expected, Clint Eastwood's Sully enjoyed a second straight weekend atop the box office and it wasn't much of a competition. Not one of the weekend's three new widest releases managed to even top ten million as Blair Witch and Bridget Jones's Baby fell well short of expectations and Open Road's Snowden pretty much delivered as expected depending on whom you asked. Overall, the weekend's top twelve was down 11.6% compared to last week and down 24.3% compared to last year with the top twelve generating an estimated $74.6 million, just $136k shy of the worst weekend of the year so far. With an estimated $22 million, Sully dropped only 37% in its second weekend as the film's domestic cume now stands at $70.5 million, just $1.8 million shy of the entire run of Tom Hanks' Bridge of Spies, which went on to earn six Oscar nominations last year including a win for Supporting Actor.

This week sees the premiere of Andy Tennant's comedy Wild Oats, about naughty older women living it up on an accidentally acquired five million dollar cheque. And one of these 'scoundrettes' is played by Jessica Lange. A model bursting into the movies in the mid-1970s, literally as a scream queen, Jessica Lange quickly moved on from just a pretty face (with killer body attached) to an actress to be reckoned with. She tackled dramatic roles with ease and realism, and has even managed to pick up one of those golden statues (correction: two, see the comments section below). She's awesome and there is no mistaking it. So once again I'm going to use eleven pictures of one of my favourite thespians to make a quiz....

Lionsgate's Blair Witch arrives seventeen years after the original film and it's hoping to become the third horror film to top the weekend box office this year. Standing in its way is last weekend's champ, Sully, which has delivered record results over the past few days and is looking at a $20+ million second weekend. Other new wide releases include Universal's Bridget Jones's Baby, arriving twelve years after the last film, and Open Road's Snowden. Meanwhile, Pure Flix debuts the documentary Hillsong: Let Hope Rise in over 800 theaters and Freestyle releases Mr. Church starring Eddie Murphy into approximately 300 theaters. Overall, while there could be a fight at the top with a couple of $20+ million weekends, this weekend's top twelve looks like it will be down from last year by about 10-11% with the top twelve generating around $89 million compared to $98.6 million over the same weekend last year. 2016 has already seen 11 films...

The Screen Gems thriller When the Bough Breaks disappointed compared to some of their similar releases, taking second place with around where we predicted with around $14 million. The lower profile animated film The Wild Life (Summit/Lionsgate) did end up in fifth place behind Don’t Breathe and Suicide Squad, but with a measly $3.3 million in 2,493 theaters. As expected, Relativity’s theatrical return with its own horror/thriller The Disappointments Room...

Screen legends Jessica Lange and Shirley MacLaine have teamed for the new comedy Wild Oats, which was shot two years ago and now will finally be arriving in theaters next month. Directed by Andy Tennant (Hitch, Fools Rush In), the story follows a woman who gets a life insurance check for $5,000,000 instead of $50,000, so she takes an unexpected vacation to Canary Islands with her friend.
Also starring Demi Moore, Billy Connolly and Alan Arkin, if you enjoy often the often under-represented geriatric comedy genre, Wild Oats looks to fit the bill. This one got the Grace of Monaco treatment from The Weinstein Company, premiering on Lifetime last week before a theatrical release next month. While they still have yet to officially release a trailer, one popped up on the international circuit. Check it out below, along with the poster.

Shirley MacLaine and Jessica Lange are in a movie together. It's called Wild Oats and it was directed by Andy Tennant of Fools Rush In and Sweet Home Alabama fame. You can see why this news is vexing. We should be thrilled about seeing MacLaine and Lange together (in a comedy no less!) but it might not be a great addition to this growing "Old dames having a ball!" genre that's become a staple of late.
The film, which follows the two Oscar winning actresses "newly rich" (given a banking error in one's husband's insurance policy), "newly single" (see above), and "forever young" (they're timeless, these glittering movie stars) looks to be a tad more Hello My Name is Doris than I'll See You In My Dreams, with a whiff of The Exotic Marigold Hotel. Oh, and did I mention it co-stars Demi Moore?

Demi Moore is set to star—and perhaps party—alongside the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Ilana Glazer, and Kate McKinnon in the comedy Rock That Body. The movie from Glazer‘s Broad City collaborators Paul W. Downs and Lucia Aniello is about a bachelorette event that goes bad when a male stripper ends ups dead. Details of Moore’s role aren’t available yet, but we’d like to imagine she’s playing the hot older woman who gives the young ones sage advice about topics like sex and the appropriate manner in which to hide dead bodies.
The cast also includes Zoe Kravitz, Jillian Bell, and Downs, just to add a little bit of testosterone, not that it’s at all necessary. Moore was recently seen in Wild Oats, which aired on Lifetime and also featured Shirley MacLaine and Jessica Lange.

When Jessica Lange announced that she wouldn't be appearing in American Horror Story: Hotel, fans were distraught. She's been an integral part of the show since its inception, first appearing in a pivotal supporting role in Murder House and then taking the lead with bravado in Asylum. In Freak Show, she basically performed showstoppers exclusively, including her super-uncomfortable versions of David Bowie's "Life on Mars?" and Lana Del Rey's "Gods and Monsters." She's starring in the road-trip comedy Wild Oats this fall, opposite Shirley MacLaine and Demi Moore, and will return to Broadway next year for a revival of Long Day's Journey Into Night. But Lange isn't gone from American Horror Story for good. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, series creator Ryan Murphy said: "It’s always possible. I’m trying to deal with her play schedule. Jessica is always about the character. She’ll be back—she’s not gone forever.

American Horror Story made its first appearance at San Diego Comic-Con this year, but true to form, they were chary with the details about the upcoming season currently in production, Freak Show. But at the very least, we now know more about the characters, including the fact that the villain, to be played by Fargo's John Carroll Lynch, will rival Rubber Man, Bloody Face, and the Minotaur from the previous three seasons in terms of pure horror. "He will scare the shit out of you," said executive producer Tim Minear at a Saturday Comic-Con panel. Here are some other tidbits: Jessica Lange (who wasn't there because she was shooting Wild Oats in Spain) will play Elsa Mars, the head of the freak show. The show is set in Jupiter, Florida, in the 1950s. As for the rest of the cast: Kathy Bates will play Ethel Darling with Evan Peters...

Matt Walsh, who plays the sweaty, mustachioed Mike McLintock on Veep, has joined the Wild Oats cast, which includes Demi Moore, Shirley MacLaine, and Jessica Lange. Andy Tennant (Hitch, Fools Rush In) is directing the comedy about a woman (MacLaine) who gets a surprise windfall because of a computer glitch, and decides to run and take the money rather than fess up. Walsh will be playing a grifter named Forbes. With three films coming out (the tornado chase flick Into the Storm, the rom-com Sex Ed, and his second film as a director, A Better You) and another in production (6 Miranda Drive, a horror movie with Kevin Bacon), Walsh is a busy man.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is just about to hit in stores, and I’ve got a copy of the Blu-Ray Combo Pack for you. The Ben Stiller vehicle didn’t have quite as much impact on theaters as I expected, but I’m hoping it gets a new lease on life with the home release.
That might be a little surprising (catch our podcast review, and my Answers.com review) considering that I haven’t exactly championed the film whole-heartedly, but I wasn’t exactly opposed to it either. It’s a fun ride, that had a few rough spots, and didn’t exactly play out the way I’d have liked. In the end, I think it’s a lot better than most are probably giving it credit for, and it has a few scenes that really shouldn’t be missed.

Maybe Jack Black is getting his career back into shape. Right in the wake of Richard Linklater‘s (reportedly amiable) Bernie getting a tiny release, ScreenDaily reports that he and Shirley MacLaine will collaborate once more on Wild Oats, an independent comedy that Howard Deutch (Pretty in Pink) is directing; Alan Arkin and Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom) are also locked to star.
ThePlaylist have some finer points on the story, informing us that Oats (written by Gary Kanew and Claudia Myers) is the story of two women (Weaver and MacLaine) who go to Las Vegas after one is sent a Social Security check for $900,000; there, the friends encounter three criminals who try to swindle the money from their grabs. And, although it’s not confirmed by any means, I’m guessing Arkin and Black will play two of those three fellows, if only because I like to make assumptions based on little-to-no proper information.

Clearly, Jack Black made one too many "Gulliver's Travels" or "A Big Year" -- in the last twelve months or so, the comic star (who just released a new record under his Tenacious D guise) has veered mostly away from big studio comedies to more interesting sounding indie-type projects, like Richard Linklater's recent, and very charming "Bernie," prospective Michael Winterbottom project "Bailout," and Charlie Kaufman's "Frank or Francis." And now, there's another one on his dance card that sounds pretty promising, all in all.
