If you're wondering why the last 20 years has felt like something was missing, it's because John Woo hasn't given us a Hollywood action flick since 2003's "Paycheck." The legendary Chinese filmmaker is responsible for some of the greatest films of all time and remains the patron saint of Gun Fu. Woo has been continuing to make films in China, with his most recent, 2017's "Manhunt" a return to form in the same vein as "The Killer." But if you've been missing heroic Hollywood bloodshed like "Face/Off" or "Hard Target," now is the time to rejoice as Woo is back with "Silent Night," a dialogue-free Christmas action film starring Joel Kinnaman of "The Killing," "Suicide Squad," and "For All Mankind" fame. This is the perfect time for Woo's return, as films like "Nobody" and the "John Wick" franchise owe their existence to his filmography. In fact, "John Wick" producers Basil Iwanyk...

It was just a few weeks ago we exclusively shared the news that Harmony Korine had completed his next project, an action-oriented feature shot entirely in infrared starring Travis Scott. Since then, another Harmony Korine-Travis Scott project had a surprise release while Venice Film Festival announced the action picture would premiere out of competition at the festival.
It’s titled Aggro Dr1ft, and the first image has been unveiled and can be seen above in all of its Predator-esque infrared glory. Also starring Jordi Molla, the film clocks in at 80 minutes, and outside of not being produced by A24, that’s about all we know regarding the project thus far.
Since his 2012 hit Spring Breakers, Korine has only directed one other feature––2019’s The Beach Bum––so we’re quite looking forward to seeing what he has in store with this mysterious new project. Check back for our review...

When Bosch first premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2014, the streaming world was in a very different place. Netflix had only House of Cards and Orange is the New Black under its belt. Hulu was still a joint venture owned by multiple conglomerates. Disney+, HBO Max, and Peacock didn’t even exist. Now, in June 2021, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases is highlighted by one last outing for LAPD Detective Harry Bosch.
Bosch season 7 premieres on June 25. This will be the last batch of episodes for the series, before a spinoff gets rolling for IMDb TV. For those who are not caught up on the sprawling procedural, Amazon has some other original TV series this month as well. Brazilian crime drama Dom premieres on June 4. That will be followed by the second season of the Anna Paquin-starring public relations drama Flack on June 25.

There’s at least one reason to stay away from Gunpowder Milkshake, but so far it doesn’t have anything to do with the actual movie that’s going to be starring Karen Gillam, Angela Bassett, Lena Headey, Carla Cugino, Michelle Yeoh, and Paul Giamatti. Instead, it’s the few words that have been given concerning how various assassin movies have become a ‘boy’s club’ in the past, which brings to mind the idea that there is still a lack of equality in movies. It would appear that some folks have forgotten about Kill Bill, Colombiana, Hanna, Ava, and various other movies featuring female

Action movies are always going to remain one of the most popular genres in cinema, because there’s no better form of escapism than leaving your brain at the door, sitting back and enjoying two hours of fist fights, car chases, shootouts and explosions. That’s one of the many reasons why Extraction ended up becoming Netflix‘s most popular original ever, but it’s far from the only actioner to gain a huge audience on the world’s biggest streaming service.

The theatrical industry is still struggling to return to normal, and matters aren’t helped as the studios continue to pull major releases from the calendar and send them to next year. There might not be a lot of content available on the big screen, but luckily the streaming wars remain in full swing, and as the market leaders, Netflix are constantly updating their library to retain their position at the front of the pack.
Enola Holmes has become the latest of the platform’s originals to dominate the conversation, but the usual array of forgotten titles have also been posting a strong showing as subscribers occupy their downtime with a variety of movies and TV shows, not all of which need to be the subject of critical acclaim or even good reviews.

Netflix was ahead of the game for October, releasing its “Netflix and Chills” horror lineup in anticipation of the Halloween season. Now the streaming giant has unveiled its full lineup for October, and believe it or not: horror remains at the forefront of its strategy.
The biggest release this month is undoubtedly The Haunting of Bly Manor, Mike Flanagan’s long-awaited followup to terrifying Haunting of Hill House. That arrives on Oct. 9. The film side of things is where most of Netflix’s other horror originals reside, with Hubie Halloween (Oct. 7), A Babysitters’ Guide to Monster Hunting (Oct. 15), and Rebecca (Oct. 22) all making their debut.
Some non-horror originals of note this month include high school drama Grand Army (Oct. 16) and the Anya-Taylor Joy-starring chess story The Queen’s Gambit (Oct. 26). Aaron Sorkin’s latest film, The Trial of the Chicago 7, arrives on Oct. 16.

The full list of everything that’s coming to Netflix in October has been released today and as we’re facing the prospect of a Halloween spent at home, the streaming site is making sure that we’ve got more than enough spooky content to keep us occupied. In fact, there’s a huge amount of new movies and TV shows arriving on the service next month as part of the “Netflix and Chills” season.
October 1st also delivers a lot of great newly licensed content, too, which you won’t want to miss. Sticking with the Halloween theme, though, the haul features a few horrors/thrillers including Cape Fear, House of 1000 Corpses and You Have Always Lived in the Castle. Then, on the 2nd, new original movie Vampires vs. the Bronx lands. And skipping ahead to the 7th, be sure to catch Adam Sandler’s latest comedy, Hubie Halloween.

The name EuropaCorp might not mean much on first glance, but any self-respecting fan of the action genre has seen at least a handful of the production company’s movies. Founded by Luc Besson, EuropaCorp specializes in mid-budget and almost universally mediocre actioners that tend to provide a halfway decent slice of Friday night entertainment before fading entirely from memory. Responsible for the Transporter and Taken franchises along with Colombiana, Lockout, 3 Days to Kill, Brick Mansions, Anna and many more, you know exactly what to expect when you see their logo play in front of the credits.
Now, one of the studio’s more forgotten titles has become the latest unremarkable movie to have found an unexpected second life on Netflix, as From Paris with Love currently ranks as the eighth most-watched film on the streaming service in the United States. If you’ve seen even just one mid-budget and completely forgettable action movie in the last fifteen years, then there’s a distinct possibility that Luc Besson may have been involved.
The writer, director and producer has delivered some solid genre work behind the camera with the likes of La Femme Nikita, Leon: The Professional, The Fifth Element and Lucy, but his EuropaCorp production company made their name churning out a series of generic shoot em’ ups that convinced a roster of A-list talents to try their luck at becoming action stars.
The most successful experiment by far was Taken, which launched Liam Neeson towards an unlikely late-career resurgence as an action hero, but for the most part, EuropaCorp’s output has been characterized by tepid reviews and lukewarm box office numbers. From the dawn of dembow to the trap en español boom, the Latin influence on hip-hop, and, in turn, rap’s impact on Latin music, have progressively led to a continuous hybridization of styles. Even before a streaming revolution and the increasingly global normalization of high-speed internet made it possible for budding producers and eager spitters to find inspiration mere clicks away, the evolution of the música urbana category relied upon cultural exchange among countries, often yielding exciting results.

Too Hollywood for art houses and too art house for Hollywood, iconoclastic French filmmaker Luc Besson has always had to blaze his own trail. Unwilling — or unable — to compromise from the very start (his debut feature was a dialogue-free post-apocalyptic drama about a waterless future where it occasionally rains fish), Besson continues to offset his pigheadedness with his passion. He eventually got so sick of looking for support that he launched his own production company, EuropaCorp, which has become one of the most profitable in all of Europe by churning out the kind of carnivalesque shlock that made its founder so famous in the first place. Besson may not have directed the likes of “Taken,” “Lock-Out,” and “Colombiana,” but his fingerprints are all over them.

Director Olivier Megaton is set to direct a sci-fi action film called The Champion. The movie is described by THR as being in the "vein of a futuristic Spartacus, Champion tells of a man falsely imprisoned for an act of terrorism who must battle through the prison’s gladiator program to regain his freedom."
Megaton has a solid resume of action films that include Taken 2, Taken 3, Transporter 2, and Colombiana. He will be directing the film from a script being written by actor-turned-scribe Hal Ozsan (Dawson’s Creek).
The Champion sounds like it could make for a really cool action film. Who doesn't like gladiator movies?!

Initially intriguing detective tale of ancient Rome hops genres into fantasy, with a strange manic-preacher-dream-boy seduction of its pragmatic protagonist. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

Here’s something we don’t see often on the big screen: a detective story set in the ancient world. There are lots of novels, but I can’t think of a single other movie in the mold of Risen, an initially intriguing mystery tale in which a politically ambitious Roman soldier, Clavius (Joseph Fiennes [Hercules, Running with Scissors], who is terrific here), is set to a policing task by Pilate (Peter Firth: Spooks: The Greater Good, Pearl Harbor), the Roman governor of the province of Judea in the Middle East. “Momentum” is a confused, bland, and wholly unoriginal action/thriller that tries its best to ripoff the mid-budget international action formula of Luc Besson’s Europacorp productions. Releasing almost a double digit amount of modestly-budgeted-for-wide-release action movies every year, the Europacorp machine operates in two gears: 1) Take a respected actor in between middle and senior age and turn him into a stoic and effortlessly charismatic action star. This approach worked wonders with the twilight of Liam Neeson’s career. Sean Penn and Kevin Costner, not so much. 2) Take a talented, attractive, recently popularized female star who’s been relegated to supporting roles in giant-budget Hollywood films and give her a leading role as a badass action hero. Scarlet Johansson in “Lucy” and Zoe Saldana in “Colombiana” comes to mind. “Momentum” tries to duplicate the second approach by dropping the gorgeous and otherwise talented Olga Kurylenko into a wholly predictable and.

Naturally, 2014 box office runaway train "Lucy," from director Luc Besson, has a sequel in development. Besson's wildly entertaining Scarlett Johansson vehicle grossed over $450 million worldwide including $126 million stateside, making the cult Euro auteur attractive to Us studios. (While "Lucy" was released stateside by Universal, production took place entirely abroad.) Allocine has the story here. EuropaCorp trumpeted the news of a "Lucy" sequel at the recent CineEurope film expo held in Spain. The company also unveiled plans for a sequel to "Colombiana," the 2011 Besson-scripted crime thriller starring Zoe Saldana as a scorned assassin. Directed by Olivier Megaton and released in the Us by Sony, the film flopped here and overseas. But the franchise could work with Saldana, boosted by "Avatar" and "Star Trek" and "Guardians of the Galaxy," on board; a "Lucy" franchise, meanwhile, would lean heavily on...

Sequels to Lucy and Colombiana are in the works at EuropaCorp, as well as Warrior's Gate, starring Dave Bautista...
Add two more sequels to the list of those currently queuing up to get to the big screen. This time, this is a pair of films from Luc Besson's EuropaCorp production house, which has already proven its happiness to make sequels where previously they'd been ruled out (that'd be you, Taken 3).
In this case, EuropaCorp has announced a slate of projects that includes both Lucy 2 and Colombiana 2, both of which are surprises. Lucy, and this really doesn't give much away (given quite how insane its last 20 minutes is), doesn't leave too many doors open to a sequel, and Besson himself seemed to have ruled one out last summer, saying "it's not made for that". It's unclear at this stage if Scarlet Johansson will return for the new film. Given...

Luc Besson is the director of "The Professional" and "The Fifth Element," but is also the brains behind the "Taken" and "The Transporter" franchises, which he created through his EuropaCorp company. Today we have a list of upcoming EuropaCorp productions, which include sequels to female action films "Lucy" and "Colombiana." While the hope is to create new franchises, there's a good chance Besson will take a very different approach with the two properties. "Lucy" was released last year and starred Scarlet Johansson. The film was a surprising hit, grossing a whopping $458 million worldwide on a budget of only $40 million. The sequel will likely bring back Johansson and have a bigger budget. "Colombiana" wasn't as lucky. It hit theaters in 2011 and starred Zoe Saldana. The movie cost $40 million to make and was only about to earn $61 million worldwide. It was also hated by critics. So it's very likely that the sequel...

Luc Besson's EuropaCorp company is participating in CineEurope this week where they announced their list of upcoming movies.
The big surprise is that sequels to last year's Scarlett Johansson sci-fi thriller "Lucy," and the Zoe Saldana action thriller "Colombiana" are both in development.
A year ago Besson himself was asked "Lucy" sequel prospects to which he replied "I don't see how we can do [a sequel]. It''s not made for that." Looks like someone found a way.
Also on the way are "Shut In" with Naomi Watts, "Nine Lives" with Kevin Spacey, "The Lake" with Sullivan Stapleton, and "Escobar" with Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz which are all due next year. The Dave Bautista-led "Warrior's Gate" and Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne-starring "Valerian" are also due in 2017.

Say what you will about Luc Besson, but the guy knows how to craft a kick-ass action heroine. At CineEurope 2015, his production house EuropaCorp unveiled a packed slate of upcoming films, and included in the roster were a pair of sequels to two of Besson’s most successful female-driven action-thrillers: Lucy and Colombiana. That’s right – despite Scarlett Johansson’s psychokinetic badass ascending past human form at the end of Lucy, and Zoe Saldana’s revenge-minded assassin slaying the man responsible for her parents’ murders, both characters are gearing up for more carnage-heavy adventures.
It shouldn’t really come as a surprise that Besson is interested in Lucy 2 and Colombiana 2 – both films were solid performers at the box office (especially Lucy) and starred actresses who are becoming more bankable by the week – Johansson is a proven draw for audiences with Marvel fans in her pocket, while Saldana recently led Guardians of the Galaxy...
