'Chefpiet' is a character portrayed by actor Don van Dijke on multiple shows based on the tradition of saint Nicolas. In 2013 it had been a few years since Chefpiet last starred in a television series. Fans asked the channel that aired a previous series if he could come back. However, competitive series "Slot Marsepeinstein" by channel Nickelodeon and creator Studio 100 decided to give answer to the demand. As a result that same year actor Don van Dijke made his very first appearance in the series "Slot Marsepeinstein" as the character 'Smartpiet'.
In 2016 an album was released with new cover versions of songs from the television series and several traditional songs. These versions were sung by non-Piet characters from multiple different shows of Studio 100. The name of the album is "De Leukste Studio 100 Sinterklaasliedjes".
Starting in the 4th season (2013) Smartpiet and Swingpiet both have their costumes in a shared style and the names of their functions (Smartpiet and Swingpiet) both start with the 'S'. The reason for this is probably because they both have a music career; Swingpiet sang most of the songs on the first album of "Slot Marsepeinstein" while Smartpiet performed songs for a different television series.
In episode 17 of season 4 there is a huge poster present on a wall that shows a drawing from the Dutch Amsterdam book "Sint Nicolaas en Zijn Knecht". This is told to be the oldest saved book based on Saint Nicolas and Black Pete, this book was released in 1850.
A survey taken in 2019 showed that the traditional character Black Pete is more popular than ever. The television series "Slot Marsepeinstein" has depicted this character quite faithful to the tradition, in 2011 even showing the original black skin color instead of the lighter dark brown. The recognizable earrings, however, were still missing.
