War and Peace
The second episode sees Tony Blair entering Downing Street after the Labour landslide in the 1997 election.
On election night itself Blair did not want any triumphalism. When Alastair Campbell is being interviewed as the count is still taking place, you can sense that he is having a breakdown and he is not yet in government as the communications director.
Blair had a massive honeymoon period which was cemented with the death of Princess Diana and the Good Friday Agreement.
Gordon Brown started off brightly as well. He made the Bank of England independent. He gave an important facet of power away. He also implemented a windfall tax on the privatised utilities which allowed him to raise funds.
If there were dark clouds. It was more from the underlings. Brown's spin doctor Charlie Whelan liked to cause mischief against the Blairites. The chief target was Campbell and Peter Mandelson.
It meant disagreements were amplified, sometimes dirty linen was washed in public.
Another fascinating episode. You can see these are big beasts of government, people who grew into the role. Despite the petty jealousies, they knew they were here to serve.
Contrast that to the genuine minnows of Boris Johnson's government sneering at the little people who stuck to the rules during Covid. They partied like it's 1999 because rules do not apply to them.
