Cover your children's eyes! It's Sasha Grey, sorta stripping, on an iPhone. What the heck is Nacho up to this time? There's an official poster out via Bloody-Disgusting for the new film from Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo (of Timecrimes, Extraterrestre) called Open Windows and it's rather odd. Besides Sasha Grey on the iPhone, its got Elijah Wood on various CCTV screens in the background, seemingly peering at the hand holding the phone. So what the heck is going on here? It's actually about a guy obsessed with an abducted actress, and how he's able to find her, shot entirely point-of-view directly from his laptop. What?! Here's the first Open Windows poster, directly from B-d.com. Why it's so bright and flashy, I do not know. Open Windows as explained by writer & director Nacho Vigalondo last year (via Dread Central): "Just as in Brian De Palma's Blow Out, the girl is captured.

As Director Mike Cahill proved in his collaboration with Brit Marling on Another Earth, a science-fiction premise doesn’t have to dominate a story’s narrative. Instead it can serve as an interesting backdrop that casts familiar tropes in a new light and gives characters alternative motivations for what would be otherwise commonplace situations. Following a similar vein in the very same year was Nacho Vigalondo’s Extraterrestrial (or Extraterrestre), which examined the fallout of a one-night stand in the context of an alien invasion. The same kind of lies are told and the same rash decisions made to cover up the infidelity, but the paranoia of potential aliens among them heightens every emotion and lends comedy to some situations where there’d be none. The end result is an offbeat dramedy that’s captivating despite not being all that funny or particularly poignant.

The crowds have amassed in San Diego for the largest annual gathering of comic and film fans known as Comic-Con. I envy our pals who make the trek where once-in-a-lifetime magic happens, including musical performances from The Guild cast members or the appearance of the filmmakers and the entire cast of Firefly and Serenity -- more precisely, Ut graduate Felicia Day (The Guild, Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog), Joss Whedon, and Nathan Fillion. Reports have already come out of San Diego of Whedon and Day dancing with fans.

If you're in a summer movie frame of mind and looking for an FX-laden sci-fi adventure, a title like Extraterrestrial (Extraterrestre), opening Friday for a week-long run in Austin, might seem like an obvious choice.
But it isn't. Despite the movie's title and summer release date, the extraterrestrial elements in this Spanish import from Fantastic Fest regular Nacho Vigalondo serve only as a backdrop for an intriguing, witty and rather minimalist comedy about the relationships between four characters. There is little action and barely a hint of digital effects; although Extraterrestrial is set during an alien invasion, it focuses on a far more interesting story about human nature.
The film opens as a young Spaniard, Julio (Julián Villagrán), awakens after a very successful night of drinking and womanizing. He finds himself in the apartment of Julia (Michelle Jenner), a woman no one would mind picking up in a bar. The...

2012 promises to be a fantastic year in cinema ,(although halfway through the year it has been somewhat of a letdown). Not too long ago, we posted a list of thirty of our most anticipated films of 2012, and so I decided I would keep track of my favourite films released each month. Here are my favorite films released in June.

Prometheus
Directed by Ridley Scott
Screenplay by Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof
2012, USA
Ridley Scott’s ambitious quasi-prequel to Alien may not answer all of its big questions (or any for that matter), but it’s redeemed by its sheer visual spectacle, technical wizardry and emphasis on tone and atmosphere. Prometheus is not without problems – just ask the fine folks over at Red Letter Media – but director Ridley Scott takes chances and while some of his choices don’t always work, Prometheus is at least never boring. While weighing heavily on familiar science fiction conceits,...

In 2007 Nacho Vigalondo wrote, directed, and co-starred in "Timecrimes," a loopy Spanish-language time travel thriller that announced a bold new voice in science fiction filmmaking. Ingenious on an almost molecular level, the incredibly low-budget feature combined traditional time travel concerns (including multiple variations of the same character) with a hard thriller edge and a De Palma-ian obsession with voyeurism. In short: it was an absolute blast. Well, Vigalondo is finally back, with an altogether different take on science fiction. "Extraterrestrial" (or "Extraterrestre" in its original language) is a kind of romantic comedy set against the backdrop of a global alien invasion. It might not be as bold or crackling as "Timecrimes," but it is just as unique.
The set-up for "Extraterrestrial" is diabolically clever and just as simple – we watch two people as they wake up from what appears to be a one-night stand. The fellow, Julio (Julian Villagran, weedy...

You wake in a strange place without memory of arriving. You see light’s curved shadows on the wall through clouded eyes while a chorus of clanging is heard in the next room. Disoriented, mildly frightened, and without a clue to what is going on, you’re lost trying to recall the erased minutes of an alcohol-infused evening eerily similar to a crackpot’s account of alien abduction. But rather than a greyed creature with probe in hand, the figure moving in the kitchen is an attractive young woman wearing only a t-shirt. As startled as you by the circumstances of your cohabitation, the realization of what more than likely transpired in your drunken haze only escalates a palpable awkwardness further. A one-night stand that forgot to end, your embarrassed goodbyes are interrupted after discovering the spaceship hovering outside the window.

Extraterrestrial (Extraterrestre)
Directed by Nacho Vigalondo
2011, Spain
Nacho Vigalondo’s sophomore directorial effort unspooled at this year’s annual Toronto International Film Festival to a mixed audience reaction. The director has already proved himself a talent after his smart low budget time-travel debut, Timecrimes, but Extraterrestrial is a different beast, an idiosyncratic romantic comedy that masquerades as a sci-fi alien invasion flick. Unfortunately, Extraterrestrial falls victim to a misleading advertising campaign, from its teaser trailer, poster and even its plot synopsis. Still, the filmmaker shouldn’t be faulted for the studio’s marketing decision. The bottom line is Vigalondo continues to sharpen his skill in not only merging genres but also directing a pic that gleams with spunk and a wicked sense of humour. Comedy is the hardest genre to tackle, but the director, along with his fabulous cast (consisting of only five actors), succeed in spades. Extraterrestrial might not...

"Love... is from another world." A brand new full-length trailer for Timecrimes director Nacho Vigalondo's new sci-fi/drama/comedy Extraterrestre, which just means Extraterrestrial in Spanish, has debuted over on Vimeo (via Bleeding Cool). Don't let that name trick you, this is barely sci-fi at all and there's not many extraterrestrials in it (no spoiler), but there is a beautiful lead actress by the name of Michelle Jenner. And you will watch this (over and over) for her alone. Julián Villagrán also stars as Julio, with Raúl Cimas and Carlos Areces. This trailer gives you an idea of the characters and how amusing is, give it a shot below. Watch the full subtitled official trailer for Nacho Vigalondo's Extraterrestre, embedded via Vimeo: "There’s only one sane response when you wake up to a sky full of alien invaders – run like hell. Spanish writer/director Nacho Vigalondo‘s career has been worth tracking since his first full-length film, Timecrimes, debuted in 2007. His second feature, Extraterrestre, debuted just this year at the Toronto International Film Festival (our review here). With Timecrimes slated to get the American remake treatment, it’s not entirely surprising that Vigalondo’s third film, a thriller called Windows, will be his first English language movie.
Quiet Earth reports Windows started off as an experimental Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity style film, but has since ballooned into a full and, at $4 million, ambitiously-budgeted feature. It is being described to producers as ”a tense, fast-paced thriller with drops of humor and horror, about the world of the Web, which has made prisoners of us all.”
What does that mean? I’m not sure, but after seeing Timecrimes, I’ll give Vigalondo the benefit of the doubt every time. I haven’t caught Extraterrestre yet,...

Wild Bunch has picked up the international sales rights (Not distribution rights, for all the sites who will lift this news and misreport it) to Oscar-nominated Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo's hotly anticipated new thriller project Windows, currently in development, reports Screen Daily. Vigalondo has written the script for Windows, which is going to be a thriller about watching and being watched on the internet "in a style similar to Alfred Hitchock's film Rear Window," Vigalondo told the mag. Vigalondo's sci-fi romantic comedy Extraterrestre is currently screening to much acclaim at the San Sebastian film festival and at Tiff. Pre-production on Windows is expected to start soon and the producers are approaching top level Us/international actors for lead roles of the same calibre as Ryan Reynolds, who starred in Spanish director Rodrigo Cortes film Buried.

Well the Toronto International Film Festival has provided another incredible lineup again this year. Among the best of the fest is Steve McQueen’s Shame (so far the best of the year), Lynne Ramsay’s We Need To Talk About Kevin and Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive. Sadly I had to cut my trip short by three days, so I will be missing some key films, including Ben Wheatley’s Kill List, Bela Tarr’s Turin Horse and Bruce McDonald’s Hard Core Logo 2. We still have plenty of reviews to come in the next few days so make sure to check back for more coverage.
Luckily for me I dodged all the movies that received unanimous negative feedback. Perhaps the six films that have been panned the most by critics and audiences alike are, Sarah Polley’s Take This Waltz, Guy Maddin’s Keyhole, Madonna’s W.E., Joel Schumacher...

As I continue seeing films at the Toronto Film Festival, it's always hard to keep up with written reviews of everything, since I usually see three or four films per day. Instead, I met up with my good friends Jordan Raup of The Film Stage and Peter Sciretta of SlashFilm to record a video blog, right on the street, talking about two films we saw in the last few days. This video includes our thoughts on Nacho Vigalondo's new sci-fi drama Extraterrestre (aka Extraterrestrial) and Jennifer Westfeldt's new indie dramedy Friends with Kids, which is basically an indie version of Friends with Benefits, but with Kids, too. Watch below! My own quick thoughts on each (with more discussion in the video): Extraterrestre is barely science fiction, only in the slightest, it's more of a romantic drama, and it's just okay; the nuances of the relationships and the...

Such a dilemma. Run for your lives or stay with the girl of your dreams? Arsenico Producciones and Sayaka Producciones Audiovisuales released the teaser trailer for the science-fiction romance film “ExtraTerrestre.” Here is a synopsis: Everyone knows what to do if one morning the sky would be absolutely full of UFOs: run as fast as you can. However, what would happen if the invasion started while you are in the flat of the girl of your dreams, the one you have just met? The film stars Michelle Jenner (“Spanish Movie,” “Faust”), Carlos Areces (“Torrente 4,” “Museo Coconut”) and Julian Villagran (“La Cebra,” “El Sindrome de Ulises”). The film is helmed by Spanish short film director Nacho Vigalondo. His last feature film was with 2007’s “Timecrimes.” “Extraterrestre” is making its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and Austin’s Fantastic Fest. It will be released in Spain later this year.

Extraterrestre Teaser Trailer. Nacho Vigalondo‘s Extraterrestre (2011) teaser trailer stars Julián Villagrán, Michelle Jenner, Carlos Areces, Raúl Cimas, and Miguel Noguera. This is certainly one quirky looking film: romance, black comedy, and science fiction mixed together. If its balanced it could be entertaining.
More on the plot of Extraterrestre:
“Julio wakes up – horribly hungover and with no memory of the night before – next to a mindblowingly sexy girl, in a stunning apartment. She wants him to get out now but the alien invasion that’s just begun outside is the perfect excuse for Julio to stay.”

I don't even know what they're saying and I can't wait to see it. When strangers Julio and Julia wake up in the same apartment, groggy and hung-over from the night before, the last thing they are expecting is to discover that an alien invasion has taken place. In Extraterrestre, Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes) melds science fiction, romance and black comedy in his latest feature about the darkly fascinating aspects of the human psyche. This looks quaint, quiet, charming and just damn good, but with that "black comedy" side, I expect there's more to it. Enjoy the first Spanish-language teaser trailer below! Last week we broke out news about the international lineup for the official section of the 59th San Sebastian Film Festival. Today we receive word on the Spanish titles that would be showcased at this year's edition including the latest from Enrique Urbizu, Isaki Lacuesta and Nacho Vigalondo (see pic). Competing for the Golden Shell award at the official section we find: “No HABRÁ Paz Para Los Malvados (No Rest For The Wicked)” from Enrique Urbizu, starring José Coronado, Rodolfo Sancho, Helena Miquel and Juanjo Artero. The comeback of one of the most gripping Spanish film noir directors after an eight year absence.“Los Pasos Dobles (The Double Steps)” from Isaki Lacuesta, a fictional documentary taking its inspiration from the biography of French artist and author François Augiéras. Running between August 31st and September 10th, the 68th edition of the Venice Film Festival would be a dandy last edition for festival impresario Marco Muller even if he doesn't nab the likes of Wong Kar-wai's The Grandmaster, Walter Salles' On the Road, Fernando Meirelles' 360 and/or Zhang Yimou's Heroes of Naking. In his final year of contract, with approximately twenty-two competition slots (minus the already confirmed opening film from Italian res George Clooney and his Tiff-bound The Ides of March), this thursday's announcement should be heavy on items from the the U.K along with a robust presence from European filmmakers headed by Roman Polanski's Carnage. From France, we think that Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi's Chicken With Plums (see pic above) Mathieu Kassovitz's Rebellion, Yves Caumon's Bird, John Shank's Last Winter, Emily Atef's Tue-Moi (Kill Me) and Juan Diego Solanas...

While sequels to both Wanted and Kick-Ass seem to be stuck in development hell for the time being, creator Mark Millar has been hard at work dreaming up even more edgy comic books to be turned into hit movies. Last year we heard that Tony Scott was attached to direct [1] an adaptation of Nemesis, his comic about a billionaire genius who reacts to the death of his parents by becoming a supervillain as opposed to a superhero. Now he's got another high concept comic in development called Supercrooks, and after hinting that he had a high profile Spanish director interested in bringing it to the big screen, it has finally been revealed that the director is Nacho Vigalondo, the man behind the brilliant time travel thriller Timecrimes. Even if you're getting sick of Mark Millar's work, this seems like something to get excited about. Like most of his comics,...

Another indie sci-fi flick we've been keeping an eye on is Extraterrestre, the latest film from Spanish comedian-actor-director mastermind Nacho Vigalondo, who was recently announced as director of Mark Millar's Supercrooks. We featured some fun teaser posters for this last year, but over the weekend some new photos and an impressive official teaser poster were debuted via Bloody-Disgusting. This looks pretty good, I can't wait to find out when we'll actually get see it - I'm assuming it will premiere at Fantastic Fest this fall. Click on either of the photos below to see one more over at Bloody-Disgusting of actress Michelle Jenner. Here's the new poster for Extraterrestrial - the basic English translation. Quite a step up from the others. "There’s only one sane response...

Bleeding Cool has been able to confirm that this director is one Nacho Vigalondo Vigalondo's credits include the Spanish version of Big Brother, a short film 7:35 de la Mañana for which he was nominated for an Academy Award in 2003, he directed his first full length film, Timecrimes in 2007, and is currently working on his new film Extraterrestre, an alien horror movie.

We've been talking about Nacho (Timecrimes) Vigalondo's alien-fueled next film, Extraterrestre, for a few months now with the last time bringing some really cool teaser one-sheets. This time? Eh, not so much.
Big thanks to DC reader Mark for giving us the heads up that over on Vigalondo's Twitter page the director posted some brand new, shall we say, less than stellar artwork in promotion of the movie. Dig on it below along with the previous goodies.
Extraterrestre stars Michelle Jenner (Faust, Spanish Movie), Carlos Areces, Julián Villagrán, Raúl Cimas (Spanish Movie), and Miguel Noguera.
Synopsis
"Everyone knows what to do if one morning the sky would be absolutely full of UFOs: run as fast as you can. However, what would happen if the invasion started while you are in the flat of the girl of your dreams, the one you have just met?"

When we were putting together our lists of the films we are most anticipating in 2011 here at HitFix, I didn't have to think twice about adding "Extraterrestre" on my personal list. That's the new film by Nacho Vigalondo, and that's all I need to know to be interested. Why? Because I've seen "Los Cronocrimenes," released here as "Timecrimes," and that convinced me that Vigalondo is a man worth paying attention to whenever he's got new work coming. Over the last few years, Nacho has become a fixture at Fantastic Fest, and he's a genuine lunatic. I think one of the...

Director Sam Raimi and writer Andrew Marlowe are currently in talks to create big budget alien invasion movie, Edf…
What do you get if you mix "Top Gun with Independence Day and add a pinch of The Last Starfighter"? The answer, according to Vulture, is an alien invasion project currently in the works at Warner Bros.
Maverick Evil Dead director turned Hollywood stalwart Sam Raimi is said to be in "deep negotiations" with Warner to create Edf, which stands for Earth Defense Force. Hollow Man and Air Force One writer Andrew Marlowe is scribbling the script, which details the efforts of Earth's armies to repel a full-scale incursion from extraterrestrials.
As described by Vulture, the script sounds like 90s blockbuster Independence Day with an extra act or two added to the back end. Having survived one initial onslaught, a united effort is made by Earth's forces to defend the planet from a second,...

You don't know Nacho Vigalondo? Get out of town! Vigalondo is a brilliant, hilarious & talented Spanish filmmaker who received an Oscar nom for his short 7:35 in the Morning. His first feature was the low key time travel cult classic Timecrimes (which if you haven't seen, you need to right away) and although he's got all kinds of different projects on the horizon, his next feature is a sci-fi film called Extraterrestre, which is Spanish for (you guessed it) Extraterrestrial. Two new teaser posters showed up on his official website (via SlashFilm) and they give us an idea of the mood and a small tease of what to expect and I already can't wait. Extraterrestre is written and directed by Vigalondo and is apparently still in production. Here's the official synopsis from IMDb: Everyone knows what to do if one morning the sky would be absolutely full of UFOs: run...

Two mysterious but fun posters have emerged online for Timecrimes director Nacho Vigalondo’s latest flick, Extraterrestrial (Extraterrestre) Have you guessed what it’s about yet? The teaser posters feature a video camera capturing a flying saucer and the other one is a retro Space Invaders homage.
There is little known about the plot and there’s been two synopses released that don’t correlate! Here’s the latest one featured on Bloody Disgusting:
Everyone knows what to do if one morning the sky would be absolutely full of UFOs: run as fast as you can. However, what would happen if the invasion started while you are in the flat of the girl of your dreams, the one you have just met?
But apparently, The Playlist have it the story focused on people:
“who experience a global alien invasion without even knowing it has happened, by listening to rumors, or engaging in pointless activities.

Timecrimes director Nacho Vigalondo has announced his next film, Extraterrestre (Alien). The director gave a plot description (translated by Sci Fi Latino) on his blog:
"Vigalondo writes that this will not be like a War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise, where a regular person manages to somehow closely witness all major invasion events. He writes that most people will experience a global alien invasion without even knowing it has happened, by listening to rumors, or engaging in pointless activities. Hence Extraterrestre."
I like it -- first of all it doesn't involve Tom Cruise, so how can it go wrong? Secondly: creepy and foreign language are a great combination and Vigalondo has proven he knows how to mess with our minds. I have no idea what's going on in the teaser poster, but really, isn't that the point of a great teaser? The less you know, the more freaky things can go.

Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo is best known for his 2007 temporal-shift movie Time Crimes, a flick that followed a bumbling everyman as he dealt with the exceedingly complicated rules of time travel. Now Nacho’s taking his knack for sci-fi and applying it to aliens, while hopefully avoiding the pitfalls and perils of one Mr. Shyamalan.
Bloody Disgusting posted the story, wherein Vigalondo announced the new movie, entitled Extraterreste, via his official blog. Scifi Latino then had the courtesy of translating the director’s post, which resulted in this little nugget of info:

Update: Here's an English plot outline: A group of people live an alien invasion, far away from the invaded zones, through the rumors and testimonies of other people.
Spaniard Nacho Vigalondo took the genre world by storm a few years ago with Timecrimes. The unlikely time travel adventure turned a few heads and marked Vigaondo as yet another bright voice in Spanish cinema.
The director has been pretty tight lipped about his next project but late last week he shared the first image from his upcoming project titled Extraterrestre (the exact translation on that is Alien). Yup, more sci-fi from Vigalondo.
The film will present a large-scale alien invasion through the eyes of an ordinary individual. The other tidbits I can gleam out of the various bits floating around the Spanish interwebs indicate that the film will concentrate on the invasion as it may actually occur with the general public...
