The upcoming Downtown Film Festival Los Angeles (Dffla) is looking to promote minority performers. “We tend to lean toward films that have a multi-cultural theme, cast, crew,” Greg Ptacek, the festival’s co-director, told Backstage. “We’re an urban film festival.” The curtain goes up July 9 with the L.A. premiere of director Giovanni Zelko’s “The Algerian,” an international thriller shot both on location in Middle East and downtown L.A. The festival, which is held at venues throughout downtown, will screen about 100 films—three quarters of which are shorts of music videos. “Independent filmmakers used to, as their calling cards, make short films—and they still do, which is why we have four programs of short films—but increasingly a lot of them are making music videos,” Ptacek said. “We’re delighted to be the Los Angeles premiere platform for new videos by Sean Lennon and his band,...

You could read a ton of stuff on the production of Man of Steel but Variety’s Jeff Sneider has confirmed that Harry Lennix is the most recent cast addition and will portray General Swanwick in Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot.
Gen. Stanwick character doesn’t seem to be familiar with Superman mythology from its roots so we can’t be sure what the role will require. According to /Film he’s probably one of the high ranking American military officials that will sooner or later kneel before Zod. Still, that leaves a lot of room for guesses. However, Commander Lock in Matrix sequels is joining recently added Christopher Meloni who’ll also portray a general in new DC Comics film adaptation.
However, it seems that Connie Nielsen’s cast for the role of Kal-El’s biological mother, Lara, has not been confirmed – Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe,...

Josh Pence, who played opposite Armie Hammer as Tyler Winklevoss in The Social Network, has been confirmed as Ra’s Al Ghul in The Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan‘s new Batman pic.
It was all very hush-hush and behind close doors kind of stuff, although Christian Bale, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman are returning to lead a caped crusading cast for a darknight Bruce Wayne’s squad, which includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cottilard.
The storyline has also been kept under wraps in the Batcave but Pence’s casting leaked Online. Ra’s Al Ghul was played by Liam Neeson in Batman Begins, to be a preparation for a possible return of the allegedly dead character.
While the studio never confirmed Cottilard’s character, it has been rumored to be that of Thalia Al Ghul, the daughter of Batman’s mentor-turned-enemy.
According to sources Pence...

Josh Pence has been cast in The Dark Knight Rises. Josh Pence joins the cast of The Dark Knight Rises (2012) supposedly as a younger version of Ra’s Al Ghul, whom Liam Neeson played in Batman Begins. Christopher Nolan‘s third Batman film sees “Josh Pence, who played opposite Armie Hammer as Tyler Winklevoss in The Social Network (where Hammer’s face was superimposed on his)” joining a cast that already includes Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Juno Temple, and Marion Cotillard. Josh Pence presence in the film paves
the way for a possible return of the supposedly dead character. Also, while the studio never confirmed [Marion] Cotillard’s character, it has been rumored to be that of Thalia Al Ghul, the daughter of Batman’s mentor-turned-enemy.
Sources say Pence will appear in scenes that take place 30 years prior to the present story.

It looks like Ra's al Ghul is immortal after all.
Well, not quite. While the brilliant supervillain enjoys eternal life via his occasional baths in the Lazarus Pit in the "Batman" comics and animated series, the Ra's al Ghul of Christopher Nolan's Gotham City is stuck in a more realistic world. So when Liam Neeson crashed the train at the end of "Batman Begins," there's a good chance that was the last we'd be seeing of Ra's al Ghul.
Unless, of course, we go back in time...
Heat Vision brings word that Josh Pence has signed on to play a young Ra's in "The Dark Knight Rises," appearing in a flashback sequence that takes place 30 years before the present Bat-story.
The presence of Ra's, whether he be young or old, only helps fuel the rumor that his beautiful and dangerous daughter, Talia al Ghul, will be making an appearance...
