- Lydia's mother dies,giving birth to a stillborn baby, and her father has to take her out of school to look after her brothers and sisters. Bessy's boyfriend Reg puts the screws on Huggins for more money,which he gets Snaith to loan him. He learns that the new estate is to be built on marshland and anyone who owns part of it will do well financially when the council come to buy it. Carne faces repossession of his farm as the bank threatens to foreclose on his mortgage. He travels to Manchester to seek a more suitable home for Muriel and bumps into Sarah,on her way to spend Christmas with her sister. - Midge Carne is worried about the family's financial situation and fears they might end up in the poor house. Lydia Holly's mother, with a toddler still too young to walk, is once again pregnant. She has a miscarriage however and bleeds to death. Lydia's father pleads with the local relief committee to provide household help which would allow Lydia to continue her scholarship. Councilor Huggins is still dealing with Bessy's pregnancy. He thinks he's found a way out but it doesn't quite work out as planned. At Christmas-time, Robert Carne travels to Manchester to look for work. There he happens to meet Sarah who is on a shopping expedition en route to her sister's home for the holidays. They spend an enjoyable evening together and have every intention of spending the night in Sarah's room.—garykmcd
