"It's not just a two-minute race," Rob Hyland, coordinating producer for the NBC Sports Group, said in a statement. New York (AP) — NBC is adding Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski to its Kentucky Derby telecast as fashion correspondents next week, illustrating how the network's coverage now reflects one of the most female-friendly televised sporting events of the year. The two figure skaters, who were the breakout stars of NBC's Sochi Olympics broadcast team, will comment on the fashionable outfits worn by members of the rich and celebrity-filled audience who try to avoid spilling mint juleps on their designer duds, the network said Tuesday. The image of cigar-chomping race fans no longer applies to horse racing's signature event. Slightly more than half of NBC's Derby viewers last year were women attracted to the party, the Nielsen company said. No other major TV sports event, with the exception of the Olympics, is so weighted toward female viewers, NBC said. "It's not just a two-minute race," said Rob Hyland, coordinating producer for the NBC Sports Group.

Johnny Weir, Tara Lipinski Join Kentucky Derby Broadcast
Weir and Lipinski, both retired professional figure skaters, have been tapped by NBC to join the network’s telecast of the Kentucky Derby, commenting on the fashions on display at the annual horse-racing event, reported Entertainment Weekly. The event, attended by the designer dud-clad rich and famous, generally draws a large female audience – more than any other sporting event save the Olympics – for that reason.
“It’s not just a two-minute race,” said Rob Hyland, coordinating producer for the NBC Sports Group. “Of course, the two-minute race is extremely important, but our job is to capture the venue and the day – it’s a huge celebration — as creatively and poignantly as possible.”

Mark Lazarus has been tapped to head the newly formed NBC Sports Cable Group, Dick Ebersol, the chairman of the NBC Sports Group, announced Wednesday.
Jon Litner will head Versus and SportsNets and Mike McCarley will lead the Golf Channel.
“People are the most important part of any organization and the experience, talent and leadership ability of this group is second to none,” said Ebersol in a statement. “As we formed the new NBC Sports Group by combining the storied history and broad reach of NBC Sports with Comcast’s 24/7 ability to super-serve the fan, it was imperative to create a leadership team that possessed a wide array of experience and expertise across the business. I could not be happier with this group of collaborative leaders and I feel that our division is well positioned going forward.”
