I'm hit or miss on the "V/H/S" franchise. I love me a horror anthology film, but more often than not, this series comes up short for me. However, every now and then the on-going franchise will produce a segment that rises above the fray, like the excellent "The Empty Wake" from "V/H/S/94." But I think most people will agree that the all-time-best "V/H/S" entry is Timo Tjahjanto and Gareth Evans' "Safe Haven" from "V/H/S/2." Not only does it make great use of the found-footage angle (something that can't be said for other entries), it's genuinely scary.

Exclusive: Labid Aziz’s People of Culture Studios (PoC Studios), has picked up North American distribution rights to Kim Bass’s comedy A Snowy Day in Oakland, and will open the film nationwide in theaters over the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday weekend, Jan. 13, 2023. The movie is the debut theatrical release for PoC Studios.
Written and directed by Kim Bass, A Snowy Day in Oakland follows an upscale psychologist from San Francisco who decides to end a stalled romance with her longtime, high-profile, psychiatrist, boyfriend/business partner. She moves on with her life by opening her own private practice in a vacant, street-front office space in the middle of a small, commercial block located across the bay in Oakland, turning the predominately African-American and psychologically ignored neighborhood on its emotional ear.

If there’s one thing Julianne Hough has been doing lately, it’s stopping traffic with her latest high-fashion fits on the NYC streets.
The former Dancing With the Stars dancer, 34, has no intention of slowing down her style game anytime soon — especially after showing off her recent looks during New York Fashion Week.
On Thursday, the triple threat shared her latest outfit with her 5.1 million Instagram followers in the form of a video made up of four street-walking photos.
In the action shots, Hough took to the middle of Manhattan in a black minidress that featured cutouts on her right arm and left hip. The intricately designed dress only had one sleeve, along with a collared feature to take her classic “little black dress” to the next level.

Julianne Hough is reliving her behind-the-scenes moments from her time at New York Fashion Week.
The former Dancing With The Stars dancer has been sharing her all-beige look from a fashion show she attended last week in Manhattan.
At the base of her outfit, Julianne was rocking a tiny, white knit bra top and a pair of high-waisted tan trousers.
Overtop, the triple threat wore an oversized blazer in the same shade of tan as her baggy pants — which were pulled tight by a large matching belt.
Julianne added a pair of closed-toe heels and a handbag of the same beige shade to pull her look together. For accessories, the Safe Haven star wore a few gold necklaces and oversized sunglasses lined on top with the same color as her outfit.

I love horror anthology movies ... at least in theory. I really love the idea of an anthology — a series of short films tied together in one neat package. But the truth is, there are more bad horror anthologies than good. Even the best of the best almost always have at least one segment worth skipping. The "V/H/S" franchise might be the worst offender — there are five films in the series so far, and I can count the number of good segments on one hand. The best of the best is, without question, Timo Tjahjanto and Gareth Evans' "Safe Haven" from "V/H/S/2," a brilliantly-conceived and genuinely scary story about a death cult. But nothing else in the series has ever come close to that tale.
In fact, I've found the series so miss-heavy that I kind of gave up on it. And then came "V/H/S/94," which ended up being my favorite in the entire franchise.

Jon Hamm will be featured as the celebrity guest in the premiere of game show revival “Password,” NBC has announced.
Based on the original show, which ran from 1961 to 1975 (and has been revived in several forms since then), “Password” pits two teams compete against each other as they solve word puzzles using one-word clues. The team that solves for the password ultimately takes home 25,000. Each team consists of a contestant and a celebrity player, with executive producer Jimmy Fallon leading one team and a rotating guest leading the other. Writer/Director Rob Savage made huge waves in 2020 with Zoom-hosted seance gone wrong lockdown horror Host, a film recently voted as one of the scariest of all time in an online poll, and which caused sleepless nights for many horror hounds amidst the pandemic. Now, he returns with a Covid chiller of an altogether different sort. Where Host’s power was in its confinement, Dashcam goes out into our pandemic-battered world, as one provocative personality finds herself in an ever unfurling nightmare. In what is already gaining attention as a modern day video nasty.
Starring alternative indie rocker Annie Hardy (playing an extreme version of herself), this film sees the loud and controversial anti-vax, Trump supporting, live-streaming improv “rapper”, escaping the American lockdown experience to travel to meet an old mate in England. When things naturally go awkward, she finds herself on the road, unexpectedly asked to give a quiet...

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook) has entered into a first-look production agreement with Universal Pictures, which will see him produce three features for the studio alongside Anonymous Content.
The films will be based on some of Sparks’ most recent novels, the first being his 2021 hit The Wish—a story about the enduring legacy of first love, and the decisions that haunt us forever. Zack Hayden will produce the big-screen adaptation on behalf of Anonymous Content with oversight by CEO Dawn Olmstead and Cco David Levine, alongside Sparks’ longtime literary agent and collaborator, Theresa Park, and Universal Pictures’ Vice President of Production Development, Lexi Barta.

With a new month upon us, that means Netflix is saying farewell to some favorite films in their library for the time being. And this month, there’s an unusual amount of good movies leaving Netflix. If you’re wondering what to watch before it’s gone, we’ve got a handy guide.
Fans of period dramas and family films, in particular, may find themselves with a lot to catch up on before it leaves Netflix. In the former category, films like “Howard’s End,” “Lawless,” “A River Runs Through It,” “Bright Star,” and “Braveheart” are all expiring in March.
But the Kids and Family section is taking a particularly big hit this month. Animated departures include “Kung Fu Panda,” “Despicable Me” and “Despicable Me 2,” “Happy Feet Two,” a handful of “Pokemon!” movies and series, and meme culture favorite “Bee Movie.” There are also several live-action family classics leaving Netflix in March as well,...

I have always been a sucker for comeback stories, especially at a time like this when careers veer dramatically between triumph and cancellation – though some comebacks may raise questions (see below).
In the world of corporate suits, I admired Alan Horn’s remarkable comeback at Disney after Warners abruptly declared him excess baggage. Or Ron Meyer emerging as the boss of Wild Bunch after Universal cut him loose. Or even Paramount levitating Brian Robbins to studio chief after his Eddie Murphy movie bombed (Eddie cast as a literary agent in A Thousand Words!).
At another level, I was impressed by Bill Tennant’s fortitude in reinventing himself as a highflying talent manager after plunging into drug addiction and homelessness – becoming a role model for the similarly afflicted.
On the talent side, the Tom Cruise legend was famously crunched when he was “fired” by Paramount and Valkyrie bombed, only to be...

Exclusive: A reboot of the 1992 hit Steven Seagal action movie Under Siege is underway at Warner Bros. with Timo Tjahjanto directing and Umair Aleem writing. The duo, I hear, collaborated and developed the pitch together with the movie being planned to stream on HBO Max.
There’s no word yet if Seagal will reprise his role as Casey Ryback, the ex-Navy Seal turned cook who was the only person in that movie to stop a group of terrorists from taking control of a U.S. battleship. The movie, directed by Andrew Davis, grossed over $156M WW when it was released and spawned a 1995 sequel Under Siege 2: Dark Territory which minted over $104M-plus WW. Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey starred in the first movie.

Are you ready to delve deeper into the world of True Blood?

Truest Blood.
Cool, right?
The podcast series will be hosted by series stars Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pam De Beaufort) and Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica Hamby).
They were great together on-screen, and a video they recently released in-character got a lot of attention because they still manage to play their characters to perfection.
The podcast will be co-produced by HBO Max and Janina Gavankar’s Safe Haven Productions.
Gavankar played Luna Garza in the series.
All three actresses will also serve as executive producers of the podcast.

Josh Duhamel Hilariously Recalls "Beautiful" Moment He Beat Ashton Kutcher in a Modeling Competition
Move over, Zoolander! It looks like there were two other male models storming the runway in the '90s: Josh Duhamel and Ashton Kutcher. During an appearance on the May 17th episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers, Josh recalled the moment he joked was "probably the most pivotal moment in my life—beating Ashton Kutcher." It was in 1997 that the two model-turned-actors competed for the title of Male Model of the Year in New York—and this wasn't just any catwalk contest. The Safe Haven actor revealed that it was a week-long competition full of "swimsuits and runways." "You know, the whole week was about, 'Who's...

Even with new titles on VOD and streaming charts, the Oscar nominations may shake things up. Netflix received 35 total nominations among 14 titles, providing an unprecedented chance to see how many titles return to charts. The two top performers to date have been “Hillbilly Elegy” and “The Midnight Sky.” Nomination leader (with 10) “Mank” barely caused a wrinkle on the charts, placing tenth for a single day when it was released.
Currently, the dominant VOD titles are Sony’s standard-price ”Monster Hunter” and PVOD “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.” However, the other #1 is Nicholas Jarecki’s “Crisis” (Quiver) in its second week. The tripych of opiate-crisis stories starring Gary Oldman and Armie Hammer showed initial response last week and is now tops at Apple TV (which often foretells success later at other sites). For some reason (possibly a listed price of $9.99?), it doesn’t show up on the top 500 titles at Google Play.
Currently, the dominant VOD titles are Sony’s standard-price ”Monster Hunter” and PVOD “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.” However, the other #1 is Nicholas Jarecki’s “Crisis” (Quiver) in its second week. Kevin Hart’s upcoming drama “Fatherhood” will fittingly premiere on Netflix on Father’s Day weekend.
The film, directed by Paul Weitz, was originally set up at Sony Pictures and slated to release theatrically on April 16. However, the studio has negotiated a licensing deal with Netflix (excluding China) as nearly 50% of U.S. cinemas remain shuttered due to the coronavirus pandemic. “Fatherhood” will now debut on the streaming platform on June 18.
With the move to Netflix, Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground have boarded the movie. Dana Stevens wrote the script with Weitz.
Sony has offloaded a few films during the pandemic, including Seth Rogen’s “An American Pickle” to HBO Max and the Kristen Stewart-led romantic comedy “Happiest Season” to Hulu. At the same time, Netflix has been an active buyer, acquiring titles like Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” romantic comedy...

The streaming wars are just as fiery and competitive as ever. Disney+ now has one Marvel TV show under its belt (WandaVision), with another one to come in March (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier). In response, Netflix is broadening its reach with its list of new releases for March 2021.
Netflix always features plenty of international options for viewers across the globe, but March is the first month where it seems as though international releases make up roughly half of Netflix’s originals. And that’s great! China’s The Yin Yang Master and Spain’s Coven of Sisters both look to be intriguing films this month.

Josh Duhamel is in talks to star opposite Jennifer Lopez in the Lionsgate romantic adventure “Shotgun Wedding,” replacing Armie Hammer in the lead role.
Hammer dropped out of the project last Wednesday, with a representative for the production explaining, “Given the imminent start date, Armie has requested to step away from the film and we support him in his decision.”
Duhamel would star as Tom, opposite Lopez’s Darcy, in the film about a couple who gathers their families together for a destination wedding. Things start to go south, however, after the pair gets cold feet. But it really takes a turn for the worst when the entire wedding party is taken hostage.
The Lionsgate project was first announced last fall. Jason Moore will direct from a screenplay by Mark Hammer and Liz Meriwether. The film will be produced by Mandeville’s Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman, who previously produced “Wonder” for the studio,...

With the help of a de-aged and reanimated legendary Jedi, Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian” finally triumphed over visual comfort food favorite, “The Office.”
For the week of Dec. 14 — in which the season 2 finale of the “Star Wars” spinoff series delivered a healthy heap of fanservice in its surprise cameo and plot twist reveal — “The Mandalorian” blasted off to the top spot of Nielsen’s Top 10 programs list, edging out the mid-aughts workplace sitcom led by Steve Carell. This win marks the first time that a non-Netflix show landed at number one on Nielsen’s streaming ranker. “The Mandalorian” also set a weekly record for the Disney Slus series, scoring around 1.34 billion minutes of viewing time.
“The Office” continued its steady audience growth leading into its concluding week on the platform before migrating to NBCUniversal’s streaming service, Peacock, garnering 1.31 billion minutes of viewing time across its nine seasons.
