- Dr. Larry Toth: Now some word association...
- Jules Callaghan: Stream of consciousness.
- Dr. Larry Toth: That's right!
- Jules Callaghan: That's left.
- Dr. Larry Toth: You started without me.
- Jules Callaghan: Try to keep up.
- Dominic Scarlatti: [Flashback of Spike at dinner with his parents the same day Lou died] Everyday this is my life. Waiting for the phone to ring, the officer at the door. You bring this into our house.
- Mike Scarlatti: Pa, I don't think now is the time okay?
- Michelina: Sit down please.
- Dominic Scarlatti: Everyday you go out there and you, you play the hero.
- Mike Scarlatti: Play? What you think this is a game?
- Dominic Scarlatti: Today your friend dies. Tomorrow, my son dies.
- Mike Scarlatti: One day we all die okay!
- Dominic Scarlatti: Aah.
- [Leaves dining room]
- Mike Scarlatti: At least I try to make it mean something! Pa!
- [Grabs bottle of wine and throws it at the wall]
- Ed Lane: [testing lie detector with three truths and one lie] Ed Lane. Team Leader. Born in Scarborough. We love Dr. Toth.
- Ed Lane: [Walks into SRU main lobby, sees Spike and Wordy] Study hard?
- Mike Scarlatti: What's that thing called?
- Kevin 'Wordy' Wordsworth: Yeah, yeah the long metal thing.
- Ed Lane: Loud noises.
- Mike Scarlatti: Gun!
- [Ed and Wordy chuckle in approval]
- Mike Scarlatti: See, why do we have to re-qualify?
- Dr. Larry Toth: [During Spike's psych eval. doing word association] Rain.
- Mike Scarlatti: Rainbow.
- Dr. Larry Toth: Cloud.
- Mike Scarlatti: Silver.
- Dr. Larry Toth: Sky.
- Mike Scarlatti: The limit.
- Dr. Larry Toth: Freedom.
- Mike Scarlatti: Feminine supplies.
- [Greg and Spike chuckle]
- Dr. Larry Toth: Girlfriend.
- Mike Scarlatti: Babycakes.
- Dr. Larry Toth: Bomb.
- [Spike hesitates and thinks of Lou dying]
- Dr. Larry Toth: Bomb?
- Mike Scarlatti: The job.
- [Dr. Toth makes a note on the polygraph]
- Dr. Larry Toth: Critical incident 1137.
- Mike Scarlatti: [Annoyed] Am I supposed to word associate that?
- Dr. Larry Toth: Multiple bombs across the city. You want to tell me about it?
- Mike Scarlatti: You got the file. You got the transcript. You got the voice recording.
- Dr. Larry Toth: I've got the facts. It's your experience of them I need.
- [Reading transcript]
- Dr. Larry Toth: 1:37 Officer Scarlatti directs Lou Young to approach third bomb. Scarlatti 1:43 "Okay Lew, three garbage bags. Anything rigged if they move?"
- [Spike flashes back to moment that Lou stepped on the land mine]
- Mike Scarlatti: The bomb was booby trapped with a CR-38. It's a Russian bounding mine.
- Dr. Larry Toth: And then what happened?
- Mike Scarlatti: [Looks to Parker] Why are we doing this?
- Dr. Larry Toth: 2:52 Scarlatti "Why is everyone standing around lets go.
- [Spike flashes back to moment Lou stepped off the landmine]
- Mike Scarlatti: He thought that trying the weight transfer would uh, take us both down. So uh...
- Dr. Larry Toth: But you didn't think so?
- [Looks at polygraph readings begin to spike]
- Dr. Larry Toth: You're not over it?
- Mike Scarlatti: What do you think, hmm? What's the machine tell you? I'm sorry but with all do respect what's the point? Huh, boss?
- Sgt. Gregory Parker: Doc.
- Donna Sabine: Okay, you got 90 seconds upon entry to clear the building.
- Mike Scarlatti: 90 seconds?
- Donna Sabine: Yeah. Does that worry you Spike? Spending a little too much time in the truck?
- Mike Scarlatti: No, I mean 90 seconds, I'm gonna have to bring a book or a magazine or something.
- Dr. Larry Toth: You feel guilty?
- Mike Scarlatti: [Frustrated] Yeah I feel guilty!
- Dr. Larry Toth: How do you feel now when you get a bomb call?
- Sgt. Gregory Parker: Larry stop it. We're all open to talk in here but you're picking at scabs. This is...
- Dr. Larry Toth: Sergeant, keep your comments to yourself!
- Sgt. Gregory Parker: ...emotional manipulation.
- Dr. Larry Toth: You lost a partner. You lost a best friend too, right? Let me ask you this. You lose your best friend, it's three in the afternoon. How do you spend the rest of your day?
- Mike Scarlatti: We debriefed.
- Dr. Larry Toth: After that?
- Mike Scarlatti: That's personal.
- Dr. Larry Toth: How well you handle this job is personal.
- Mike Scarlatti: I went home.
- [Flashback to Spike coming home, crying on his mom's shoulder]
- Dr. Larry Toth: You live with your mother?
- Mike Scarlatti: I live with my parents.
- [Flashback to Spike at dinner with his parents, him and his father get into an argument]
- Dr. Larry Toth: You patch things up with your father?
- Mike Scarlatti: No
- Dr. Larry Toth: Why not?
- Mike Scarlatti: 'Cause he won't
- Dr. Larry Toth: Why?
- Mike Scarlatti: He's sick
- Dr. Larry Toth: Sick?
- Mike Scarlatti: He's dying.
- Sgt. Gregory Parker: Spike.
- Dr. Larry Toth: That's why he won't patch things up?
- Mike Scarlatti: No he won't patch things up until I quit this job. Until I quit SRU.
- Ed Lane: And remember, slow is smooth, smooth is fast...
- Ed Lane, Sgt. Gregory Parker, Sam Braddock, Jules Callaghan, Kevin 'Wordy' Wordsworth, Mike Scarlatti: Fast is lethal!
- Dr. Larry Toth: You're worried about my reputation.
- Holleran: There's gotta be a good reason to...
- Dr. Larry Toth: [interrupting] I know. There's gotta be a good reason to break up a team.
- Sgt. Gregory Parker: This is Kevin Wordsworth.
- Kevin 'Wordy' Wordsworth: People call me Wordy.
- Dr. Larry Toth: Nickname. Nice. Means you're liked.
- Dr. Larry Toth: Have you ever witnessed any friction within the team?
- Sam Braddock: All families have friction.
- Dr. Larry Toth: Is this a family or a SWAT team?
- Dr. Larry Toth: Did you know about the relationship before Jules was shot? You... you knowingly put them in danger.
- Sgt. Gregory Parker: That relationship is over.
- Dr. Larry Toth: The mere mention of each other's name triggers stress reactions.
- Sgt. Gregory Parker: You know what, you read a lot into stress reactions.
- Dr. Larry Toth: Braddock and Callaghan clearly still have feelings for each other.
- Sgt. Gregory Parker: Yes, of some kind.
- Dr. Larry Toth: Which they value, it seems, more than their own team's security. They both have cause to be expelled from SRU, as do you - for turning a blind eye.
- Dr. Larry Toth: Your family keeps you grounded. You can't be the kind of cop you have to be if you're not grounded. Your family knows you, warts and all. They're there for you. But what gets you through the tough calls, Ed, the lives you couldn't save, the people you had to kill, the guilt?
- Ed Lane: My family.
- Dr. Larry Toth: So, how are you coping with them gone?
- Ed Lane: How do you know that?
- Dr. Larry Toth: Beside the point.
- Ed Lane: I work 12 hour shifts. I train 14 hours a week on top of that so that I don't cost somebody a life, so I don't let my team down. And you're saying what, that I am not a good enough cop because I am not more of a family man, is that it?
- Dr. Larry Toth: I don't care what kind of family man you are. I care whether or not you can cope with the job, for your team's sake. It's a question of balance.
- Ed Lane: Of balance? You try telling that to a guy with a gun to his head, to a kid on a ledge. What do you want me to say here? "Sorry about your luck, I got to get home for dinner?" Is that it?
- Dr. Larry Toth: I get that.
- Ed Lane: That's good. Now, you tell Holleran to stay out of my family life.
- Dr. Larry Toth: It's not Commander Holleran.
- Ed Lane: [pauses] Greg... how did he know that Sophie left me? How'd he know about that?
- Sgt. Gregory Parker: I didn't trust myself to be objective, Eddie, as a colleague or as a friend.
- Sgt. Gregory Parker: I needed an objective point of view, I needed fresh eyes on my people. I didn't need you to break 'em down.
- Dr. Larry Toth: Your instinct was right. There are fault lines running all through this team.
- Sgt. Gregory Parker: What you call fault lines - that's them being human.
- Dr. Larry Toth: [to Parker] You didn't bring in an outsider because you're worried about them. You brought an outsider in because you're worried about you. They need a sergeant, not a friend, not a father.
