Badhaai Ho
Starring Gajaraj Rao, Neena Gupta, Ayushmaan Khurrana, Sanya Malhotra, Surekha Sikri
Directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma
Stop right now and do yourself a favour. Go see Badhaai Ho. You will come out smling but also deeply moved by the artless charm of that great big universe known as the Indian Muddle Class, and I do mean ‘muddle’ where so many contradictory cultural, religious and political forces co-exist uneasily and yet without friction.
Some such controlled chaos defines the world that the Kaushik family inhabits with such fluent ownership. We’ve seen an abundance of commendable comedies on the Delhi’s confounded middleclass such as Dibakar Bannerjee’s Khosla Ka Ghosla and Habib Faisal’s Do Dooni Chaar. But none so delectably oblivious of its responsibilities of pinning down the characters to their cultural canvas.
We meet the family….rather we run into them as though their existence does not depend on our attention.

While Abhishek Bachchan has already impressed us with his self-obsessed character in the first poster of All Is Well, the character posters of other stars from the film are also unveiled now.
Rishi Kapoor (who plays Abhishek's father in the film), seems like he is facing a lot of problems (as the poster reveals 'It's all about My Problems'). Co-incidentally, Rishi Kapoor reminds us of his Do Dooni Chaar character (that of a middle class man).
Supriya Pathak also seems to play Rishi's wife who might have a problem of forgetting things (we say so as the tagline to her poster says, 'I don't remember what it's all about!)
Asin, who should have come out as a 'wow' factor, also reminded us of her 'crazy' ad she promotes on television. Thus, we don't think there's anything 'great' about All Is Well posters. What do you say?...

2013, the extra special year marking the centenary of Hindi Cinema is almost coming at an end.
To celebrate, BollySpice briefly explores the theatrical roots of Bollywood, expanding on the contribution of William Shakespeare, the famous playwright who has continuously intrigued the Indian film industry since the beginning of the Hindi film industry.
We explore selected Bollywood “Romeo and Juliet” interpretations and how they disturbingly reflect South Asian cultural issues related to “love”.
Theatrical Beginnings
When “sound” arrived into the world of Hindi cinema in 1931, it threatened the existence of the Parsi Theatre – a popular culture of performing arts that formed the foundation for what we now call “Bollywood”.
Not only had theatre formed an important foundation, but continues to be reflected through Bollywood – through more ways than one.

Nowadays films with extraordinary stories are becoming hugely popular with the audience. Movies like Ship of Theseus and The Lunch Box have been credited for not only being critically acclaimed but also commercially successful.
People in the movie business feel that today masala movies and unconventional films are co-existing and it is a very good sign for cine business.
“The Indian audience is extremely intelligent. They are mature and capable of handling anything. At a time when Dabangg became a hit, Tanu Weds Manu was a hit as well,” said actor R. Madhavan reports Ians.
Trade analyst Komal Nahta pointed out that cinemas, multiplexes and business models are changing. All kinds of films run because there are small-capacity multiplexes and one thousand people are not needed to fill up a show.

London was sparkling on a very grey, very bleak and very rainy September afternoon when Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Ranbir Kapoor, Pallavi Sharda, Sanjeev Lambda- CEO, Mahesh Ramnathan- COO of Reliance Entertainment and producer Himanshu Mehra graced London with their presence. All set for the release of Besharam, the cast and production team visited the delicious Chak89 to answer questions, give their insight and share their experiences.
BollySpice bring you a selection of questions asked by various journalists at a spectacular Besharam press conference:
Rishi Kapoor:
Was Ranbir more Besharam when he was younger? Or is he more Besharam now?
He was a ‘mastikhor’ (full of mischief), not ‘besharam’ (shameless). That’s how kids are when they are young.
Are films going downhill? Has Bollywood become vulgar and obscene?
When I started my career- that was way back in 1972. Even then people used to complain and we’d have the media asking these questions.

Mumbai, June 16: He wowed everyone with his storytelling technique in award winning movie "Do Dooni Chaar" and buoyed by the positive response to his middle-class drama, director Habib Faisal says he will certainly make a sequel to the film, but is waiting for a "kick-ass" script. Lead actor Rishi Kapoor is equally excited about the idea.
The 2010 movie starring Rishi and Neetu Singh in the lead roles along with Archit Krishna and Aditi Vasudev brought the story of a middle-class family's predicament when they decide to buy a four-wheeler. The light-hearted drama not only wowed the movie-goers, but also won National Award for best.

Ranbir Kapoor is gearing up for the release of his new film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (Yjhd), following two award winning performances in both Rockstar and Barfi! Yjhd sees him reunite with good friend and director Ayan Mukherjee, with whom he previously delivered the delightful Wake Up Sid back in 2009. Ranbir also reunites with Deepika Padukone for the film .
BollySpice caught up with Ranbir during his brief visit to London, here is what he had to say:
So Ranbir, two amazing back to back performances (Rockstar and Barfi!), how did you do it?
Well, I have always believed that I am as good as the director and the script and I was lucky to have worked with both Imtiaz Ali and Anurag Basu. So I can not take any credit for it, especially for Rockstar and Barfi!, I merely surrendered myself to the parts and they made me grow as an actor.

That 2012 began with an overwrought hyper-melodramatic brutal and tumultuous remake of Agneepath and ended with Yash Chopra’s muted mellow all-heart-no-malice ode to romance Jab Tak Hai Jaan seems indicative of the direction that Bollywood seems headed for. The journey, as we can see, is unpredictable and largely exciting. Looking back, some films of 2012 that fetched hype-star ratings seem bloated and over-eager to please either critics or the masses, but never both. Luckily the films that were truly meritorious did get a place under the swoon.
Each year Bollywood surprises us, and not always in a good way. 2012 seems like a watershed year even by the continuously evolving standards of filmmaking set by envelope-pushing directors who have filtered into filmdom during the past years. 2012 was the year when Tigmanshu Dhulia, Sujoy Ghosh and Shoojit Sircar came into their own with films that took mainstream cinema to new heights. Ishaqzaade (“Love Rebels”, rechristened “Born to Hate, Destined to Love” for TIFF2012) tells the story of Zoya (Parineeti Chopra) and Parma (Arjun Kapoor), and is set against the backdrop of the political wrangling that divides their two families.
“Here comes Ms. Earthquake,” says Zoya’s father of her when she arrives home after using her gold earrings to buy herself a gun. If that surprises us, we soon realize it shouldn’t – Zoya lives in a place divided by religion (her family is Muslim, Parma’s is Hindu) and, more importantly, by politics, with the two clans, the Qureshis and the Chauhans, vying to win elections. This is an incredibly testosterone driven world, with Zoya trying to match the machismo with her spunk and spitfire and carve out a place for herself that is equal to that of the male members of her family.

Around a year back there were strong talks about Rohit Shetty remaking Sanjiv Kumar starrer Angoor with Shah Rukh Khan. In fact the director and the actor had apparently agreed on the basic premise as well which was inspired by William Shakespeare's play 'Comedy of Errors', only to drop the idea and make Chennai Express instead. Just when the rumours had settled, grapevine has it that Ranbir Kapoor may have been approached to step into the same shoes. The only tiny problem though is that except for Ranbir himself, everyone else seems to be aware about the development.
"Ranbir has absolutely no idea from where are these rumours originating. He hasn't even heard about any such film and nothing has been offered to him yet. It is strange that his name has been dragged into this so-called remake which is supposed to go on floors soon", says a close associate of the actor.

Boney Kapoor’s laadla, Arjun Kapoor, is making his debut with the top production house of the country (surprise, surprise…but why no papa-financed-debut?!) opposite the country’s latest obsession, addiction and laadli, Parineeti Chopra. Ishaqzaade starts it promotional activities with its theatrical trailer and is gearing up for May 18th release.
So needless to say another film proves that crude is Oh-so in right now! Nargis’s porn film obsession in Rockstar, Dirty Picture’s bold theme and Delhi Belly…well the entire film are just three examples of just how much we’re pushing our boundaries. Some like it, some hate it but no doubt the days of Rajshri’s clean films or Karan’s innocent love stories are long gone and even the biggies like Yrf are turning a new leaf.

This is perhaps the first for any debutant as well as a production house as big as Yash Raj Films. For Arjun Kapoor, son of prolific producer Boney Kapoor, Virus Diwan was the film that was supposed to be his launch pad. However, things changed drastically over last six months, hence leading to another project being designed for him, which has been named Ishaqzaade. "When Virus Diwan was announced at the beginning of 2011, it was going to be a relatively humble launch for Arjun. The film was being made under the banner of Y-Films, a new youth segment of Yash Raj Films. Others films that were slated to arrive under the same banner were Luv Ka The End and Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge, both of which starred newcomers", informs an industry source, "In fact there were photo sessions also done while publicity material of Virus Diwan too was released."
