The 2016 Los Angeles Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday, June 1st, and this year’s Nightfall lineup looks to be yet another strong selection of genre films set to thrill festival-goers night after night.
For those of you in the southern California area, the 2016 Laff runs through Thursday, June 9th and is calling the ArcLight Culver City Cinema home this year. Here’s a look at what we’re anticipating once the Laff begins later this week, and for more information on the festival, please visit:

Abattoir (directed by Darren Lynn Bousman)
Full disclosure: Abattoir was edited by my significant other, so I am certainly biased, but my enthusiasm for the film comes from my excitement to see Bousman return to the hardboiled world of horror after working on The Devil’s Carnival musicals and his comedy-infused segment in last year’s Tales of Halloween anthology.

Back in September 2015, New Form Digital announced its plan to bring six original series to Verizon’s go90 mobile video platform. The first series to debut was The Fourth Door, starring Joey Graceffa and created in conjunction with YouTube horror and supernatural channel BlackBoxTV. Now, two months after the series’ premiere on go90, BlackBoxTV released an all-new trailer for The Fourth Door on December 25.
Created by Tony Valenzuela and Jarrett Sleeper, The Fourth Door tells the story of Lain (played by High School Musical’s Monique Coleman), a young woman who tries to save the man she loves from the dangerous afterlife realm of Limbo before its King (Graceffa) destroys them. BlackBoxTV originally released a trailer for The Fourth Door on October 26, a day before the series’ official premiere on go90. The new trailer reveals snippets of the series’ dream-like shots and intense action sequences as Lain travels through Limbo on her quest.

In a land overrun by ruthless creatures that hunt by sound, even the faintest whimper can lead to your death in Tim Lebbon's The Silence, a new horror novel hitting shelves later this month. Titan Books has provided us with an exclusive excerpt from Lebbon's latest to share with Daily Dead readers, and we also have a look at two recent 31 images revealed by Rob Zombie, as well as details on the zombie series, Fight of the Living Dead, which is now available to watch in its entirety on BlackBoxTV.
Tim Lebbon's The Silence: "In the darkness of a underground cave system, blind creatures hunt by sound. Then there is light, there are voices, and they feed... Swarming from their prison, the creatures thrive and destroy. To scream, even to whisper, is to summon death. As the hordes lay waste to Europe, a girl watches to see if they will cross the sea.

I don't think Lexi Alexander would argue with me if I were to say she seems to be pushing herself further and further away from Hollywood with a lot of the comments she's made over the course of her career, and mostly the comments she's made since the box office disappointment of Punisher: War Zone back in 2008. Since that time Alexander has made a movie called Lifted (which doesn't appear to have even been released in theaters) and an episode of something called "BlackBoxTV", but she continues to be outspoken and I've even detailed one of her previous interviews concerning her Punisher movie on the "How Did This Get Madec" podcast. Well, she's at it again and this time she says she wishes Marvel had a little more input on her movie, not Lionsgate. Alexander posted an interview she recently did with Les InRockuptibles on her blog (via The Playlist...

We've already noted seven Halloween videos to help get you into a festive mood. If you're looking for even more horror in your life, check out "Kept Man", a short film created by online video vet Wilson Cleveland. Cleveland stars in "Kept Man" as a man who meets a new boyfriend, played by Hartley Sawyer. Throughout the nine-minute film, Sawyer's character slowly becomes unhinged, which leads up to a violent denouement. "Kept Man" may seem like a romantic drama at first, though its dark tone foreshadows its bloody conclusion from the start. "Most people will (and should) see it's a twisty horror thriller," Cleveland told Tubefilter. As Cleveland explains, "Kept Man" was spun off from "How to Quit YouTube", a short he directed for BlackBoxTV. "I was in the throes of a fairly epic, angry, extended depression when I wrote this last year," he said

Huge special effects movies are all well and good, but sometimes, to make an effective film, all you need is two people in a room – particularly when one of those people is John Goodman. That’s the way it is shaping up for Valencia – an upcoming thriller directed by Dan Trachtenberg (BlackBoxTV), for the low-budget specialising Insurge division of Paramount Pictures, and Bad Robot.
This will be Trachtenberg’s feature film directorial debut, and he will be working from a script by Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken, which was re-worked by Dan Casey. The story sees a teenage girl wake up in a cellar after a car accident. Her only companion in there is a strange caretaker, who explains that there has been a devastating nuclear attack on society, and they have taken shelter. John Goodman will star as the caretaker.

BlackBoxTV has returned for a fifth series of horror and sci-fi shorts, and its first offering of the new season takes on a topic with which many YouTubers can sympathize. The episode, titled "How to quit YouTube", follows a down-on-his-luck vlogger whose life is dictated by his viewers. The episode is directed by BlackBoxTV founder Tony Valenzuela and stars Wilson Cleveland (the creator of web series like Leap Year and The Temp Life) as a YouTube vlogger who clings to a dream of stardom despite possessing only a few thousand subscribers. With such a small audience, Cleveland is beholden to the few fans he has, and he lets them dictate his life--even when it means a remote "Travel Tuesday" at Joshua Tree. The episode is particularly relevant given recent comments from YouTube personalities like Emily Graslie and Boogie2988 about the damaging effect of verbally abusive commenters. Both of those creators...

The Ford Fiesta Movement is here, and it's trying to change the way brands think about engaging fans through social media. Instead of using creators as mouthpieces for canned blocks of corporate text, Ford is letting creators give the pitches most meaningful to them. The result has been some of the most fun brand videos we've seen recently on YouTube. At Social Media Week Los Angeles, Ford's Global Digital & Multimedia Communications Manager, Scott Monty, will discuss his company's online media strategy alongside a handful of the creators Ford has empowered. Panelists include Joe Nation (known in part for his work on BlackBoxTV), Bridget O'Neill, and Hank Chen; we can expect to her them offer the reasons why Ford's strategy is a positive for individual endorsers, not just the big brand. What does Ford hope to accomplish? Essentially, it's all about engagement. Large scale campaigns can roll up the 'likes' counter,...

We caught up with actor and producer Marc Senter over the weekend to chat with him regarding his role in Grace director Paul Solet’s BlackBoxTV short Going Down as well as his growing musical inclinations and more. Read on!
Senter, who came to horror audiences’ attention with his starring role of “Ray Pye” in Chris Sivertson’s 2006 indie darling The Lost, and who subsequently has appeared in Darren Lynn Bousman’s The Devil’s Carnival and Simon Rumley’s Red, White & Blue, riffed on his collaboration with Solet on the Angel Heart’esque Going Down.
“Paul and I met a handful of years back,” said Senter, who portrays “Gunther Clearly” opposite actress Dinora Walcott in Going Down, of the collaboration. “We've wanted to work together for a while now so it was a blast finally getting the opportunity to do so. Aside from being a great director, Paul's also a really positive guy.

We like Paul Solet. Best known for writing and directing evil infant thriller Grace, Solet can be seen in the upcoming season of Holliston, which premieres here on FEARnet on June 4th. While you wait for Holliston, check out Solet's latest short film, "Going Down," which he directed for BlackBox TV, based off a script by Jeff Heath. The short is a stylish noir-ish tale in the vein of The Twilight Zone and stars Marc Senter (Cabin Fever 2).

CSI creator Anthony E. Zuiker' anthology series Anthony Zuiker Presents premieres today on YouTube original channel BlackBoxTV. Aez Presents features 10-15 minute stand-alone thriller, horror or sci-fi-themed shorts on Zuiker’s new horror, thriller and sci-fi premium YouTube channel, part of YouTube's $100 million premium programming initiative. Robert Legato, Academy Award-winning VFX Supervisor for Hugo and The Titanic, directed the first episode "Reawakening," a modern day retelling of Frankenstein in which a police officer descends into merciless evil as he gets an unusual opportunity for vengeance. "I grew up watching and being inspired by great storytellers like Alfred Hitchcock, so when we partnered with YouTube for BlackBoxTV, I knew this was the perfect format for an anthology series," said Zuiker. "We are so lucky to have Rob Legato behind the premiere episode, “Reawakening.” He’s masterfully directed a story that blurs the lines between imagination and veracity that is visually...

CSI creator Anthony Zuiker has teamed up with Yahoo for Cybergeddon, a scripted drama set in the world of cybercrime. The plot revolves around a female government agent who has a falling out with the law and is on the run herself, while pursuing a master hacker who wants to bring the world to its "cyber-knees." Episodes of Cybergeddon will premiere in the fall in an exclusive window on Yahoo!, and then be packaged together into a 90-minute feature available on digital platforms and DVD. Yahoo's video initiatives, now more popular than Vevo, are continuing Yahoo's trend of tapping Hollywood talent for high profile series, including its recently announced comedy slate, which includes shows from Seth Morris, Saturday Night Live writer Mike OBrien, and Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Digital. In October, Zuiker announced original YouTube channel BlackBoxTV with Tony E. Valenzuela and the Collective Digital Studio. Cybergeddon is financed by Dolphin Media,...

Back around Halloween 2011 Google announced it would be creating 100+ "channels" on YouTube for original programming, generating about 25 hours of new programming per day; and one such channel just announced during the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas is BlackBoxTV, which is striving to be the destination for the horror, thriller, and sci-fi crowd on YouTube. Considering its pedigree, it just might pull it off!
From the Press Release:

It was only a matter of time before YouTube used its domineering online presence to transform into an authentic television medium. Launching this April on Friday the 13th is "BlackBoxTV", a new online television station dedicated to our beloved genre. Moving away from independently produced content, "BlackBoxTV" is the real-deal folks, a genuine web-based channel that will be jam-packed with all sorts of horror goodness from scripted anthology shorts to a documentary-style visit to haunted location across the planet. The most exciting endeavor, though, is that Bloody Disgusting will be partnering on "Black Friday," their weekly program dedicated to what's new and cool in the genre! Now that the "BlackBoxTV" initiative has officially been announced, Bloody Disgusting caught up with creator Tony E. Valenzuela and producer Anthony E. Zuiker ("CSI") who both exclusively reveal what we'll see in the coming year on the new station!

BlackboxTV has joined the club. This past month YouTube announced a slate of nearly 100 all-original channels as a part of its $100 million premium content initiative. The new channel features a scripted series from Anthony E. Zuiker, creator of CSI, Tony E. Valenzuela, and Collective Digital Studio. "I believe now, as I did when I uploaded my first short film in 2007, that YouTube offers filmmakers an amazing place to showcase their work and share their stories," Tony E. Valenzuela, Creator and Director of BlackBoxTV, told Tubefilter. "I am extremely excited to jump into this next phase of BlackBoxTV with my new partners, Anthony E. Zuiker, Dare To Pass and Collective Digital Studio whose guidance and experience will help BlackBoxTV accomplish it's #1 goal: to deliver the best Sci-Fi, Horror and Thriller content to the web." Valenzuela first caught our eye in 2008 with 2009: A True Story (a Streamy Award nominee), and at...

BlackBoxTV is back and so is fan-favorite Taryn Southern who seems to be finding time outside of her new first-look deal with Break.com. Southern stars opposite Katrina Zbegner as sisters, grown apart over time and now facing unusual circumstances that forcing them closer than they have ever been. “Trust Me” is a 13-minute sci-fi edition of the series, this one penned by Creator-Director Tony Valenzuela, Southern and Streamy-winning writer Bernie Su. While most of the Bbtv episodes thus far flirted with elements of science fiction as they played with horror storylines, this is first one to squarely embrace the genre and its requisite visual effects. And to do so, that meant upping the production budget. That’s where Coca-Cola comes in, and more specifically its Paris-based Coca-Cola Content Factory headed up by Stafford Green who expressed interest after Valenzuela spoke on the interactive videos panel I led at SXSW this spring.

Online video and web series news worth clicking today… Workshop the series debuts Season 2 today on Hulu after inking a distribution deal with the network earlier this spring. Creator Nate Golon is calling it the first half-hour web comedy to premiere on the site, and looking back over our records, he may be right. “As an added bonus, we’ve also posted episode 2, since people were patient enough to wait an extra week,” said Golon on the launch. That means you’ll need to earmark about 44 minutes for this comedic look inside the world of struggling La actors. 20 minutes in, we’d have to say it’s worth it. Six episodes total are due out this season, adding up to a whopping 132 minutes of comedy. [Workshop on Hulu] ElfQuest came to life last night with the SAG screening and release of the “fan imagined” trailer for a would-be series based on the popular comic book series.

Despite the 9:30 am call time and an hour lost the night before due to daylight savings, SXSW attendees turned out in droves for Tubefilter's panel Decision Trees: YouTube's New Breed of Interactive Storytellers. Tubefilter Co-Founder Marc Hustvedt led a stimulating discussion with Rafi Fine of Fine Brothers Productions and Tony Valenzuela of BlackBoxTV and DeFranco, Inc.—two of the best and most creative of YouTube's new breed of interactive storytellers. YouTube's annotations tool opened up a whole new way telling stories, with the rise of interactive videos that let viewers "choose-their-own-adventure" as they navigate through the story. The panel jumped right into a demo of TheFineBros' interactive 2010 Year In Review Shooting Range, during which Hustvedt prompted audiences to call out their choices. We navigated through the Antoine Dodson storyline, answering questions (incorrectly at first) in an 8-bit video game featuring a lo-fi version of Auto-Tune the News' Bed Intruder song.
