The year was 2001, in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, many studios struggled to find the proper way to market and release their films while still being sensitive to what had just happened. Many films were moved off their original release dates to give the studios, and audiences, more time to figure out the proper way forward. One film, however, was deemed a slam dunk: a feel good story about a man who loses his memory and is taken in by the people of a small town when they assume him to be a long lost son and World War II hero, set against the backdrop of the Hollywood Communist witch hunt of the 1950’s from a respected Oscar nominated filmmaker and starring a lead actor who was in the midst of a dramatic left turn in his career with back to back Golden Globe wins for Best Actor.

“The Green Knight,” “The Lost Daughter,” “Passing,” “Pig” and “Test Pattern” will compete for best feature film at the 31st annual Gotham Awards. The event is key stop in the awards season marathon, particularly for lower-budgeted indie fare that is looking to elbow into the Oscars race.
At the Gothams, “Passing,” a black-and-white drama that examines racism and colorist, and “The Lost Daughter,” a searing look at motherhood, led the pack with five nominations apiece. Close behind was “Coda,” a tender look at a teenager who is the only hearing member of a deaf family, earned three nominations including one of breakthrough performer for its star Emilia Jones. “Red Rocket,” the story of a washed-up porn star who returns to his hometown, also nabbed three nominations.
Nominees for the best documentary prize include “Ascension,” “Faya Dayi,” “Flee,” “President,” and “Summer Of Soul.” Best international feature is a race between “Azor,...

There's physical clutter and then emotional clutter, but sometimes the two converge in unexpected ways, and that's what comes together in Diane Crespo's appropriately titled, "Clutter." Written by Paul Marcarelli ("The Green"), and starring Carol Kane, Natasha Lyonne, Joshua Leonard, Dan Hedaya, Kathy Najimy and more, the story follows the Bradford family, who are in danger of losing their home after a visit from the county health department. And the dysfunctional group—which includes unemployed filmmaker Charlie, eccentric mother Linda, the unreliable Lisa, and the shy Penny—must attempt to get their lives in order, sort out lingering resentments and much more, before they can move on. In this exclusive trailer, you'll see how the Bradfords try and keep it together as everything falls apart. "Clutter" is available on iTunes starting on May 8th. Watch below.

Porter Profiles Public Defense With Appreciative Probing
Before dipping her toes into the film world as an executive producer on films like Serious Moonlight and Showtime’s The Green, debuting director Dawn Porter worked as an attorney for ABC Television. So, it’s no wonder that with her first docu feature she approaches the legal system with a critical eye while paying tribute to the men and women that work in the paperwork-filled trenches of lawyership as valiant, but under-appreciated public defenders. Following a trio of Georgia and Mississippi based attorneys as they inventively fight for the freedom of their clients in the face of moral axioms, mounting caseloads and suffocating six-figure student debts, Gideon’s Army veritably asks, with such professional pressure and often thankless clientèle, is justice for all even possible?

It’s been a tough road for Natasha Lyonne. Throughout the late ‘90s, the big-eyed, frizzy-haired actress made a name for herself playing tough-yet-vulnerable young women in both noted indie fair (But I’m a Cheerleader, Slums of Beverly Hills) and mainstream hits (American Pie). Her promising career took a nosedive, however, after a public battle with substance abuse, tussles with the law, and multiple health problems left her a has-been before she turned 25.
Now, after a decade of obscurity, the 32-year-old actress is slowly making a comeback. She recently appeared on the hit show New Girl, rejoined her fellow American Pie alums for the franchise’s latest – and, hopefully, final – sequel, the soon-to-be-released American Reunion, and will be seen with Kristen Wiig when Imogene hits later this year. And the work just keeps coming.

One of the curiosities of films that focus on gays and/or lesbians, especially considering the trend of growth the genre is seeing, is that audiences are going to be asking themselves if the fact that these characters are homosexual is actually doing any work. I'm not sure they should be asking that question (and I'm not sure they shouldn't), but I know they're going to be. When it doesn't seem that this question is legitimately answered affirmatively, it can make the film a strange experience. This is all the more true when it seems the filmmakers expect the answer to be an obvious, "yes."

Title: The Green Director: Steven Williford Cast: Jason Butler Harner, Cheyenne Jackson, Julia Ormand, Illeana Douglas, Bill Sage, Karen Young, Christopher Bert, Boris McGiver Gay cinema, perhaps understandably, was for a period of many years preoccupied with coming out, which, as a defining moment in the lives of many homosexuals, was ripe for dramatic exploitation. There are, though, of course thousands of other stories that are a part of the gay experience, and so it’s its own small success that something like “The Green,” about a juicy suburban sex scandal in a world tipping ever closer to true marriage equality, could unfold, and only tangentially and occasionally be about its main...

Nothing is quite as beautiful as a woman who owns her age.
Although the notion is not accepted by Hollywood standards that equate youth and beauty, we have no trouble calling to mind women "of a certain age" who seem to get more lovely with every new laugh line — and see no reason to surgically alter the gorgeous looks they've earned via a full life. Think Meryl Streep, Helen Mirren, Mary McDonnell and today's subject: Julia Ormond.
Ormond caught our attention when, as a relative unknown in the U.S., she appeared with Brad Pitt in Legends of the Fall. That performance landed her in a role made famous by Audrey Hepburn: Sabrina Fairchild in Sabrina. The remake wasn’t exactly a hit, but Ormond made the role her own — not trying to imitate Hepburn (as if anyone could), but bringing her own brand of grace and humor to the character.

Summary: A deceptively bucolic drama in need of subtlety.
What The Green could use above all is subtlety. In this tale of a Connecticut high school teacher accused of inappropriate conduct, there are very few shades of gray, and even fewer characters who posses true moral constitution. Jason Butler Harner plays Michael, an English teacher who drags his partner Daniel (Cheyenne Jackson) away from New York for the peace and quiet of New England. It was all supposed to be perfect -- Daniel puttering around the garden, Michael finishing his (you guessed it) novel -- but their lives turn upside down when one of Daniel's teenage students claims to have been the target of sexual misconduct. That student is Jason (Chris Bert), a talented but troubled boy whose nosediving grades may result in the loss of his scholarship.
The film's tagline is, "The accusation is all that matters," and this...

Warner Bros has issued photos for the Superman reboot, titled “Man of Steel,”
This time Clark Kent will be played by actor Henry Cavill. Cavill is a British actor, who Warner Brother thinks is perfect for the part. The first look at the new superman pictures are amazing.
The actor recently said in an interview, that putting on the costume for the first time was extremely cool. This new Superman will be full of A-list actors/actresses, such as: Amy Adams will be Lois Lane, Kevin Costner will be Jonathan Kent, Diane Lane will be Martha Kent, Russell Crowe as Jor-Eli and Julia Ormond as Lara Lor-Van.

Cheyenne Jackson and Jason Butler Harner in The Green
There's still no theater release date, but Cheyenne Jackson's film, The Green will at least be getting a screening this month at NewFest, the New York lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender film festival which runs July 21-28.
We've been intrigued by this project ever since we heard about it. Here's the synopsis from the press materials:
Having left behind a life in New York City for the village charm of shoreline Connecticut, Michael Gavin [Jason Butler Harner], a drama teacher at a progressive private high school, thinks he can live a simple, harmonious domestic existence with his partner Daniel [Cheyenne Jackson], a locavore caterer. Seemingly more concerned with the minutiae of suburban life than he is about challenging the bias he experiences in the provincial, recession-weary yankee bastion, Michael adheres to an unspoken survival code: Donʼt speak up, don't make trouble.

Now, Superman has two full sets of parents. It's just that one pair calls him Clark Kent, and another, Kal-El.
Deadline reports that Julia Ormond, who just wrapped filming 'My Week With Marilyn," is close to a deal to play Lara Lor-Van, Superman's Kryptonian birth mother, in the big screen reboot of the franchise, "Man of Steel." She'll join Russell Crowe -- who plays Jor-El as parents of Henry Cavill, who plays the classic hero.
Kevin Costner will play Pa Kent and Diane Lane Ma Kent, the earthbound couple who found and raised him as Clark Kent after the destruction of Krypton.
In non-family casting, Amy Adams takes on the role of Lois Lane, while Michael Shannon plays baddie General Zod.
Ormond appeared last year in the HBO miniseries, "Temple Grandin," had a three episode run in "Nurse Jackie," and will appear soon in the drama film "The Green.

With the upcoming release of Warner Bros.’ The Green Lantern this Friday, I think it’s fair to say the comic book movie has become almost annoyingly ubiquitous over the past few years – not surprising given the sub-genre’s mostly sturdy record at the box-office.
Even so, it’ll probably be a long, long time before we ever see a big-budget Hollywood film depicting the exploits of a gay superhero – a fact that of course can’t stop us from thinking about it. Following from that, below I’ve put together a list of twelve queer crusaders who I’d like to see fighting the forces of evil on the big screen, along with my fantasy casting choices for each.

Actress Illeana Douglas has filed for a restraining order against a "mentally ill" woman who has allegedly threatened to burn her "house down". The "Cape Fear" star filed papers at Los Angeles County Superior Court on Thursday, September 23 asking a judge to keep the unnamed female, said to be a co-worker's wife, away from her.
