New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features selections reflecting the month of April 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include telepathic plants, ecological horrors, and a lot of killer cats.
The Uncanny (1977)
Pictured: The Uncanny (1977)
Directed by Denis Héroux.
The Uncanny is a two-for kind of deal: it works for both National Pet Day (April 11) and Tell a Story Day (April 27). Here we have Peter Cushing‘s character talking at length about the evils of cats, with his three examples fleshing out this singular anthology. And while this film is often mistaken for an Amicus production, it was, in fact, made by The Rank Organisation. However, Amicus co-founder Milton Subotsky was also a co-producer.

The gaming community is one of the most vocal niches of the internet, so it makes sense that when a certain online trend is born, gamers are usually the first to interact with it. That’s why nearly every internet legend has its own videogame adaptation, with developers taking inspiration from bizarre creepypastas like The Backrooms and Sirenhead years ahead of Hollywood studios and network television.
Of course, the most famous of these internet-derived horror experiences is likely Mark J. Hadley’s freeware hit, Slender: The Eight Pages, a title that took the indie gaming scene by storm back in 2012. Adapting Victor Surge’s faceless creation into a Found-Footage-inspired gauntlet of lo-fi hide-and-seek, this short but sweet romp through spooky woods became infamous once online influencers began to challenge each other to endure these scares in exaggerated Let’s Play videos. Singapore-based film production outfit Potocol, whose “Tomorrow is a Long Time,” by Jow Zhi Wei bowed at the Berlin Film Festival’s Generation 14plus competition, has revealed a diverse Asian slate.

Potocol has four films in post-production and several more in development. DuckTales Season 2 Episode 11
Well that DuckTales episode didn’t go where I thought it would. I really thought this whole thing would be a big lesson for Penumbra about not giving into her mistrust of Della. That’s where it seemed it was going, right? Instead of being jealous or suspicious she should have embraced the loveable Della.
But perhaps it’s deeper than that. In any other show the lesson would be as simple as that but this is DuckTales. It’s never quite so simple.
So the moon people have lived in fear for years. They retreated underground because Lunaris’ father was afraid of the Earth. While some of the people were able to get over their fear because hey, Della Duck is amazing,...

Now that “Destiny 2’s” latest expansion, Forsaken, is almost here, developer Bungie is talking about its future plans for the online shooter in a new video documentary and blog post on its official website.
Forsaken ushers in an all-new season called Season of the Outlaw when it launches on Sept. 4. After it ends, subsequent seasons will last three months and include new experiences, events, rewards, and activities that will mostly be free for all “Destiny 2” players.
Meanwhile, the Forsaken Annual Pass will work differently than traditional post-launch “Destiny” expansions, Bungie said. It includes three major content updates called Black Armory, Joker’s Wild, and Penumbra. They will launch throughout the year alongside the free season content so players will have a steady stream of new things to do.

With the recent news of a Clarissa Explains It All reboot coming to Nickelodeon, it has us wondering one thing—what in the world happened to Sam? The iconic '90s character, played by actor Sean O'Neal, was a fan favorite amongst viewers for his skateboarder lingo, bright neon backwards hat, and of course his infamous ladder entrances through Clarissa's second-story bedroom window. And while he has seemingly been out of the spotlight for years, it looks as though O'Neal is still riding the acting train. According to his IMDb page, the now 42-year-old star has appeared in a handful of small roles including a "Party Guest" in the 2016 film Penumbra and "Protester #1" in two episodes...

Over the last few years, Adrián García Bogliano has quickly become one of my favorite independent filmmakers due to his work on projects like Cold Sweat, Penumbra, Here Comes the Devil, Late Phases (easily the best werewolf movie we’ve had since Dog Soldiers), as well as his latest film, Scherzo Diabolico, a pitch-black revenge/comedy hybrid that demonstrates ambition always comes with a hefty price tag, especially when kidnapping is involved.
Scherzo Diabolico was released this week by Dark Sky Films on DVD and VOD platforms everywhere, and in honor of its release, Daily Dead had the chance to catch up with Bogliano, as well as Francisco Barreiro, who stars in the film and previously collaborated with the director on Here Comes the Devil. Aram’s life has gradually grown into a painful existence, but things only get worse when his planned kidnapping goes wrong and all hell breaks loose, as teased in the first trailer for Scherzo Diabolico, the new film from Adrián García Bogliano that comes out on VOD, Digital HD, and DVD on May 3rd via Dark Sky Films.
Previous Press Release: A desperate man is pushed to take an extreme action to alter his life, but it may turn out to be the worst decision he’s ever made. The shocking Scherzo Diabolico, the new film from genre maestro Adrián García Bogliano, will be available on VOD and Digital HD platforms on May 3, 2016.
With Scherzo Diabolico, the prolific and wildly inventive Adrián García Bogliano (Here Comes the Devil, Late Phases, The ABCs of Death, Penumbra) has created a tale of dread concerning a seemingly mild-mannered man who enacts a disturbing plan for vengeance.

Crescent Bay may seem like a quiet retirement community on the surface, but do a little digging and you’ll discover there’s more terror than tranquility to be found, for on evenings bathed in the light of the full moon, people have been dying, and not of natural causes. ‘Late Phases’ tells the story of Ambrose (Damici) a wounded war veteran, now blind who along with his guide dog is moving into a retirement community and about to begin his first night there. Upon arrival, he and his son (Embry) unload his things and at first appearance, the community seems like a wholesome and peaceful place. Even Ambrose’s neighbor is extremely friendly and welcoming, kindly welcoming him to his new home. While settling in for his first night, he begins to hear a commotion and what sounds like a possible attack next door and he tries to investigate. His guide dog (also clearly disturbed by something in the near vicinity) ends up confronting a huge beast (to us horror fans, quite obviously a werewolf) and after being severely injured, Ambrose is forced to put down his friend and guide. Soon he begins to question the goings on in...

Is it possible to become invested in a character that is so easy to loathe? That is the question put forth by Penumbra, and it is the question that will probably determine whether or not most viewers will enjoy the film. It’s not necessary to like the protagonist of a film, but to become invested in a horror heroine is almost a prerequisite of the genre. They scream, they run, they fear for their lives and the viewer cheers for them. There’s a certain amount of joy to be gained from the hapless heroine overcoming the odds that are against her. The directors include Adam Wingard (You're Next), Ti West (House of the Devil), Noboru Iguchi (The Machine Girl, Robogeisha), Austin native Angela Bettis (May) and Adrián García Bogliano (Cold Sweat, Penumbra).

In the craziness of various festivals it had been invited to, they had neglected to send a print back to the Alamo for this first screening. All was okay, as they had a working copy of the film, although it was missing a few big edits that made it to Tiff. So while this was close to the final film,...

It’s difficult to get excited about a new possession movie when we’re regularly disappointed by studio films that poorly mimic The Exorcist. That’s why I was really impressed with Here Comes the Devil, a film that premiered this month at the Toronto International Film Festival. This is a movie that isn’t afraid to tell a different type of possession tale that many will find unsettling, in part due to its taboo subject matter.
Coming from writer/director Adrián García Bogliano (Cold Sweat, Penumbra), Here Comes the Devil stars Francisco Barreiro and Laura Caro as parents whose children go missing after exploring a hill on their own during a family trip to to Tijuana. The children eventually turn up, but it’s apparent to Sol (Laura Caro) that her son and daughter faced some kind of trauma while they were missing. Somehow, this is all related to...

Penumbra is a paranoid thriller in the mode of Rosemary’s Baby and Repulsion, with a decidedly darkly comic streak that manages to unsettle and frustrate in equal measure. The film is an Argentinean film from the Bogliano brothers, recently released in a small number of theaters and now available on DVD.
Marga (Cristina Brondo) is a workaholic who has taken time from her increasingly busy job to show an apartment she owns in hopes of renting it. When the man she has agreed to show the apartment to offers her four times the worth of the place, she reluctantly agrees on the spot, with only one caveat: they must wait for this mysterious tenant to show up to look at it. After shuffling around an appointment to secure the rental, strange things begin to happen around her. Is it due to the impending eclipse she keeps hearing about? Who...

It’s hard to believe that in a month and two days that Michael & I, along with two other writers from St. Louis, will be making our annual 14 hour drive to Austin, Texas for one of our favorite things/times of the year, Fantastic Fest. This will mark my 3rd year covering the festival and Michael’s 2nd year. The press release has been released on what will be playing at the festival and I think I can honestly say that the selection feels like it might top last year. We got some more hits off our picks of what we thought might play this year as well.

The first wave of films for the Austin based film festival Fantastic Fest featured a lot of titles that caught our eye, like Dredd 3D, Cockneys Vs. Zombies, Room 237 and the original The Shining. Today, the next wave of films were announced on the Fantastic Fest website. Here is the complete list for y’all, but we’re most excited about the inclusion of Looper and Sinister:

Fantastic Fest is truly a unique event. There’s plenty of room for arthouse films and, on some occasions, the big awards players, but one theater that hosts There Will Be Blood might, the next night, see the premiere of something you’d catch on a weird cable station at 3 A.M. You don’t get that at Venice.
Such a programming mentality is reflected in the second set of titles: We have Leos Carax‘s acclaimed Holy Motors, Rian Johnson‘s Looper, horror anthology The ABCs of Death (as if it could premiere anywhere else), Sinister, and a whole batch of films I’d never heard of up until now. It’s wonderfully eclectic, and it only makes me wish I could be there come late September.

Adrián García Bogliano (Penumbra, Cold Sweat) is a man that knows what he wants to do and does it. While some directors may feel it necessary to leave the horror genre behind to find their success, he’s compelled to dig deeper and deeper to find what truly disturbs people.
His next film,Here Comes the Devil, tells the story of a married couple that lose their children for an entire day while on a trip to Tijuana. The kids reappear soon after, seemingly unharmed. But it’s soon obvious that something terrible has changed them.
I recently had the chance to sit down with Bogliano and talk about Here Comes the Devil, what filmmakers inspire him, the struggles that come along with releasing Spanish language films in America and much more. Check it out!

Adrián and Ramiro García Bogliano's strangely enticing abduction flick Penumbra (review) is headed to DVD on August 28, 2012 courtesy of IFC Midnight and Mpi Media Group. The picture's already earned high marks from plenty of noteworthy media outlets (Bhm included) thanks to some eerie writing, a couple excellent performances and a strangely satisfying finale. The film stars Cristina Brondo, Camila Bordonaba, Berta Muñiz, Arnaldo Andre, Diego Cremonesi, Mirella Pascual and Victoria Witemburg. The highly respected Franco Burattini handles the special effects work.

Two new bits of artwork for Adrián García Bogliano's new film Here Comes the Devil debuted at Comic-Con, and we have both of these shiver-inducing one-sheets for you right here. Dig it!
The film stars Francisco Barreiro (We Are What We Are) and rising actress Laura Caro. The film's location is the Mexican city of Tijuana and its environs, including ominous caves that figure prominently in the story. Here Comes The Devil is a co-production from Mpi’s Dark Sky Films and Bogliano’s Salto de Fe Films. Adrian Garcia Bogliano is the creator of the international horror sensations Penumbra and Cold Sweat.
Here Comes The Devil is the first full-length feature from Salto de Fe Films, which is based in Mexico City. In addition to the recent Penumbra and Cold Sweat, Garcia Bogliano’s many films include such independent genre achievement as Rooms for Tourists, 36 Steps, Watch ’em Die and The Accursed.

Title: Penumbra Directors: Adrian and Ramiro Garcia Bogliano Starring: Cristina Brondo, Camila Bordonaba, Sebastian Muniz, Mirella Pascual, Diego Cremonesi, Victoria Witemburg, Omar Gioiosa, Maria Nela Sinisterra An Argentinean import that scared up a big positive reaction at last year’s Fantastic Fest, “Penumbra” is a slick, teasing, well constructed genre offering that rather skillfully exploits audience antipathy toward its bitch-on-wheels protagonist in slowly unspooling the story of a potential cult looking to find a secluded apartment in advance of an extremely rare solar eclipse. A thriller long on suspense if short on eventual explication, the movie is anchored by a fierce performance from Cristina Brondo. “Penumbra” is set in Buenos Aires. After a [ Read More ]...

“We are surrounded by monsters!” bellows the deep-voiced heavy metal singer in the end credit music for “Penumbra,” the new Spanish-language thriller opening this week. Given the subject matter, he may be drawing too broad a picture, given that so much of this singleminded scarefest relies on perspective, itself crooked in some ways.
“Penumbra” begins with our hostile introduction to the beguiling Margarita Sanchez (Cristina Brondo). Fast-talking, attitudinal and judgmental to the limit, Margarita wears an ice-cream power skirt with authority, and a girlish ponytail with impetuous confidence. Not to put a fine point on it, but she’s a total bitch. Brondo’s considerable talent and whipsmart delivery suggests it’s a miracle we don’t root for Margarita to die.
We follow Margarita, somewhat hesitantly, as she attempts to sell a ratty apartment to someone she assumes is an interested buyer. Margarita comes from money, and she essentially...

[Penumbra opens in limited release in the U.S. tomorrow and will also be available widely via various VOD platforms. Here's my review from Fantastic Fest last fall.] No movie is set unintentionally on the day of a solar eclipse, and that includes Penumbra, the new movie from Adrián and Ramiro García Bogliano. Like Cold Sweat, their immediate predecessor, Penumbra takes place in and around an aging apartment building in Buenos Aires, Argentina. But the similarities end there (except for a little "oil on woman" action). Maragarita Sanchez (Cristina Brondo) is a high-powered business woman from Spain. She is dressed sharply as she paces on a sidewalk, speaking expressively to her sister via cell phone. Margarita is not particularly happy to be spending time in...

This might mark the first time I’ve watched an Argentinian horror picture. Adrián and Ramiro García Bogliano are certainly no rookies to film or to the genre having produced quite a few shorts and another genre picture, Cold Sweat. IFC is advertising this as movie in the shape of a Roman Polanski movie which is specifically a nod to his apartment trilogy. Given the subject matter of Penumbra I can see why they might do that, but I urge you to consider that this is not Repulsion. It is not Rosemary’s Baby. It is not The Tenant. The disorientation is its own and not being a fan of two out of three of Polanski’s apartment trilogy, you may want to separate it from that group for that reason as well (as if anything I said means anything).

"Excellent selection." We've got two (non-April Fools) indie trailers to feature today, both couldn't be more unlike. This second one is for an Argentinian horror thriller called Penumbra, written and directed by the Bogliano Brothers, about a woman who rents out an apartment in Buenos Aires and everything isn't what it seems. There's a solar eclipse, many men tying up women, lots of screaming, it's intense, but still billed as a "superbly realized South American horror slow-burner." If this is your thing, or if that brutal image above somehow caught your attention, give it a look. Horror from the crazy minds of two Argentinian filmmakers. Watch the official Us trailer for the Bogliano Brothers' horror Penumbra, in HD via YouTube: An arrogant businesswoman, Marga (Cristina Brondo), rents out her apartment to a suspicious couple on the same day a solar eclipse is to take place. But when she finds out...
