Veteran filmmaker Chen Kaige might have received lukewarm reviews for Sacrifice, his epic adaptation of China’s first great opera The Orphan of Zhao but he also enjoyed one of the biggest hits of his illustrious career. According to Screen Daily, Samuel Goldwyn Vice President of Acquisitions Peter Goldwyn likely focused on the Chinese box office when he acquired U.S. rights to the sprawling costume drama. “I was completely mesmerized by this film,” Goldwyn told Screen.

Chen Kaige is nothing if not enigmatic. Having directed one of the all time greatest films about Chinese modern history and culture in the classic “Farewell My Concubine”, he went on to helm the risible and environmentally destructive “The Promise”, all but squandering his reputation in the process. Having edged his way back towards form a couple of years ago with the Chinese opera biopic “Forever Enthralled”, he returns again with “Sacrifice”, a character driven historical epic based upon the Yuan Dynasty play The Orphan of Zhao. The film stars top Mainland actor Ge You in the lead, backed by an illustrious supporting cast including Wang Xue Qi (“Bodyguards and Assassins”), Huang Xiao Ming (“The Message”), Fan Bing Bing (“Lost in Beijing”), and Zhang Feng Yi (“Red Cliff”). The film was a definite comeback hit for Chen, beating off fierce competition to become one of the highest earning Chinese productions...

One of the best things about A-list festivals is that you get red carpet ogling inbetween all the big ticket movies. Oh sure, you get that at medium sized festivals too but the celebrities and movies are more regional and less Klieg lit. So who was at Berlinale? Hailee Steinfeld was despite also showing up at Us events and London events in the same week (I didn't include her in the lineup because she's been featured so much lately). That girl has probably logged more air miles in the past month than you have all year!
Here's a small sampling of stars.
From left to right: Dominic Cooper had a new film at the festival called The Devil's Double (more on that in a bit). He must weigh 120 lbs. He is always wearing the slimmest most form fitting suits that money can buy and constant cardio workouts can provide; Diane Kruger,...

Beijing – Sitting in his sparsely-decorated corner office in a glass-and-steel high rise in the Beijing’s central business district, Stellar Group chairman Qin Hong proclaims, “There will be another Avatar in China and it’ll be another Hollywood film, but in two to three years' time, a Chinese film will do as much business in China as Avatar.”
By grossing $207 million in China alone this year (second only to its U.S. take), Avatar became China’s biggest box office hit of all time.
However, as the majority investor in upcoming films from three of China’s top directors -- Chen Kaige’s Sacrifice, just out this week; Peter Chan’s Wu Xia, now shooting with Donnie Yen and Takeshi Kaneshiro; and Kekexili director Lu Chuan’s first ancient war epic, King’s Feast, due out next fall – Stellar and Qin could eventually back the Avatar-killer

I always thought Kaige Chen’s “The Promise” got a bum rap, though, to be honest, I can understand why most people probably didn’t care for the film. However, as a fan of the aforementioned martial arts epic, I have been closely following the director’s follow-up “Sacrifice” (aka “Sacrifice: The Orphan of Zhao”) for a while now. The film certainly has potential, particularly since Chen has a knack for lush visuals and impressive action. Below you’ll find a handful of posters from the upcoming flick, all of which suggest that the picture’s revenge angle will be front and center. As a fan of revenge cinema in general, I couldn’t be happier. Add some martial arts to the mix and I’m ecstatic. If you like, a synopsis, courtesy of 24 Frames per Second: For generations the Zhao family has wielded power, until their mortal enemy...

Two new posters have dropped for Kaige Chen’s (‘The Promise’)Chinese martial arts epic sacrifice, giving us more than a hint to the darker side of story. As with any epic worth its salt its looks like Sacrifice has got in all; love, war, death and of course best till last…revenge. Sacrifice opens in China next month, but as U.S sales agent Arclight recently picked up the international rights to the movie, we’ll expect to see it cropping up for release outside of Asia soon. Synopsis: For generations the Zhao family has wielded power, until their mortal enemy Tu'an Gu slaughters the entire clan, determined to wipe out their influence forever. But one Zhao baby survives hidden by Cheng Ying the doctor who delivered him. When Tu'an Gu learns of the baby's escape he seizes every infant in the city, vowing to kill them all unless the Zhao baby is surrendered.

A little less popcorn, a little more drama. That appears to have been the mantra for director Chen Kaige as he re-enters the world of the historical epic for the first time since The Promise with Sacrifice. The comic book sensibility is scaled back, the attention to realistic characters is ramped up, and I think most would agree that this is a good thing.
For generations, the Zhao family has wielded power, even extending over the king. In a well-planned coup, their mortal enemy Tu'an Gu (Wang Xue Qi) slaughters the entire clan, determined to wipe out their influence forever. However, a solitary Zhao baby survives the massacre, and is hidden and taken home by Cheng Ying (Ge You), the doctor who delivered him, to live with his Wife (Hai Qing) and their own newborn baby.
