Great ep for personal relationships, but beyond lackluster on the emergencies
itisiabanana20 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's one thing to not have a multi-episode disaster. It's another thing when the premier emergency is a crappy cgi blimp getting caught on pole and being over before the next commercial break.

Where was the drama, the suspense, the high stakes? Bobby warned Eddie what, four times, that the blimp was unstable and to hurry! Were we supposed to be worried? Because in the end all it took was a slightly bigger than normal step onto the ladder. It actually made me laugh.

The rest of the emergencies in the episode were so bland I zoned out.

But, the worst part of the episode, by far, was that waste of however many minutes with Lucy explaining her very desired absence. Bobby offering Interim Captain to her was beyond ridiculous. The idea that she has 10 yrs experience given her nonsensical reaction to saving a woman last season was absurd. She's just an awful character and I still don't understand what they're trying to do with her (while completely ignoring Ravi, who fans actually enjoy?). Just write her off and spare us all the misery.

The personal storylines in the episode were better, thank goodness. Maddie and Chimney finding their way back to each other right off the bat was a relief. I hope they get to have a happier time together this season.

I'm very interested to see where Hen's story goes. Seeing how shocked she was that Bobby viewed her and her skills so positively was honestly heartbreaking. I hope this experience might lead to her staying with the department and advancing there, instead of leaving to be a doctor (I just want her to stay on the show!).

Bobby and Athena were great, though I'm disappointed on their behalf that they won't get their honeymoon. I'm also concerned for Bobby and his sobriety still, given the obvious call out from Athena.

Buck was...Buck. I'm interested to see where they go with him because realistically, he won't be experienced enough to be a Captain for many years, so I'm not sure where this will lead.

Eddie, what can I say? It's such a relief to see him so healthy and happy. He deserves it. His scenes with Buck (and Chris) were so sweet and I'm excited to see more of that dynamic through the season.

Lackluster for a premiere/disaster, Lucy continues to drag down good eps
CeeCeeLove2120 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
For a regular 911 episode? This has all the things we love with a heavy focus on our main characters (FINALLY) and lots on interpersonal scenes between them. And if this was the opening to a 2 episode disaster arc, I don't think I'd be as disappointed as I was. But with Kristen for SOME REASON saying they are moving away from the big disaster arcs (WHYYY??? It's hook for the new season!) and the way this Blimp emergency was hyped to at least be a one episode Big Emergency, to have it done by the first commercial break with only 4 people in any real danger?! WHAT a massive let down.

Kristen said she couldn't think of anything else to do for a big disaster?? What about a wildfire? Freak tornado? Hurricane? A stranded cruise ship since LA has a port for them? She CLEARLY should not continue to be in charge if she can't even handle the "emergency" parts of an emergency-based show. She fumbled the blackout arc, the s5 finale could have been any mediocre middle season episode (remember when 9-1-1 didn't DO mediocre? Me too. I think more than HALF of the lowest rated episodes on IMDB are in s5), and the blimp emergency was basically nothing, and they could have had 2 trapped hang gliders and the girl getting separated from her mom just in the bustle of the stadium and falling to break the heart device with the same effect.

The other continual disappointment is Kristen's insistence in forcing Lucy onto the audience. Fans have been beggjng for more of Ravi and yet, while Anirudh is off filming something else and won't be back for a bit not a word was mentioned about his absence, yet we had a whole scene dedicated to why Lucy wasn't around TO BE CAPTAIN?! What a JOKE. If Buck isn't fit, she surely isn't, seeing as how Buck had to talk her down after *checks notes* NOT failing to save someone. Please. It would be laughable how hard they keep trying with her if it wasn't robbing us of genuinely good scenes with characters we love. And Kristen mentioning Lucy in an article about the core cast while some of the ACTUAL core cast wasn't mentioned?? What a slap in the face to Ryan after he carried season 5 on his back with Eddie's arc being one of the only watchable things to come out of the season. It's past time to get Kristen out of the driver's seat.

At least she didn't write this episode and Andrew delivered some spot on character moments and some dynamics we've been missing! The Buck and Bobby scenes in particular stood out because there have been a lack of those, and the Buckley-Diaz family dinner was perfection. We also got great stuff for Hen, Athena, Maddie, and Chimney, and seeing the writing focusing in on the mains was really good. Andrew should write for the show more often. Again, if this was a normal episode it would have been a pretty great one, but as our "big" season opener the emergencies were a letdown, nothing at all comparable to even regular episode emergencies like the hospital fire or dispatch fire last season. It's time to put someone else in charge.

A strong start to the season
mrteacher-9428520 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
After the mess that was season 5 I was a little worried this season would be a repeat but based on what I saw in this episode it seems like it'll be much better. A lot was going on, but every core character got a good amount of screentime and the balance between the calls and the character stories felt quite good.

I honestly expected more from the blimp emergency with the way they hyped it up. The call only lasted until like the first commercial break and there's no way a blimp crashes into a stadium and only 2 people get injured. But whatever. The other smaller calls were classic dumb 9-1-1 cases so that was nice and light.

For the character stories:

Buck- Trying to prove he has what it takes to be interim captain was kinda funny but also cringey and I don't really think he's actually ready for it. Loved the couch metaphor and the domestic dinner scene with Eddie and Chris, as well as his conversation with Bobby. I'm curious where they'll go with it from here and Oliver is being incredibly vague about it

Eddie and Chris- Didn't have too much of a storyline but I will say there were some interesting choices made. It seems they intentionally tied them to the Buck couch metaphor by having them be who first bring it up and talk to Buck about it and the associative use of them playing Boggle in both the dinner scene and then again at the end in which the shot immediately cuts to Buck looking at the empty couch location. I know Eddie's storyline is gonna be about learning to let go as Chris gets older and wants more independence so I'm curious where this is going.

Bobby- At first I was like noooo Cap what are you thinking wanting to make Lucy interim captain over Chim or Hen?? But then there was that really nice scene at the end between Bobby and Hen that sort of explained it. Him trying to busy himself with every detail of the cruise because he's still struggling makes me feel for him so hard.

Athena- Nice chat with Hen and cute scene with May going off to college. I'm so scared for her parents and can't wait to see what next week's episode brings.

Hen- So excited for her to be interim captain, she deserves it. But I hope she doesn't get burnt out with that plus family plus med school. I imagine that will be a focus next week and in the coming episodes. Sad we didn't get to see Karen on screen but they have a big episode coming up that I'm super excited for.

Maddie and Chim- Hit me right in the feels and I'm so glad they're back together and working things out. Though they didn't go to couples' therapy like the synopsis said, I thought they handled everything very well.

Lucy- I guess she's not gonna be in the first half of the season and honestly she doesn't really need to come back at all imo. She adds nothing to the show and I still don't understand the obsession with forcing her character in.

Ravi- Also probably isn't gonna be in the first half of the season. Little mad they didn't even mention him in the episode but Lucy got a detailed explanation about why she won't be around.

Loved seeing the call center crew too (sad about no Linda though and I honestly am not a fan of the new call center setup it feels a little too bare and sterile imo) and I'm curious what role the new recruit Noah will play since he's mentioned in the synopsis for next week.

Overall a solid episode and an excellent start to the season! And great writing by veteran show writer Andrew Meyers and veteran director Jann Turner!

Warning: Spoilers
I loved seing every family together again, although as always the Wilsons didn't have much luck with their screentime. But this feeling of the working together had been missing for a season.

However, the episode in general was quite underwhelming. The blimp emergency was a blink and miss, just like the animals last season. And the rest of the emergencies had no significance at all, I have just watched the episode and I can't really remember any of them.

I loved Hen being a captain. Buck storyline looks interesting, let's see if he finally find the right couch. And the scenes of Buck and Eddie with Chris, and Maddie and Chimney with Jee were the cutest thing. The Buckleys deserve to be happy with their family.

The part about Lucy breaking her leg was so unnecessary and offensive, and dare I say a bit racist.

Any of the 118 were more qualified than her, especially Chim and Hen who have more experience than her and have been working with the 118 since the very beginning, even if Chimney decided to decline the offer they shouldn't have asked her first. Wasn't she the one crying for an emergency were nothing bad happen? Is she really the person that should be a captain? Kristen Reidel really needs to stop with her obsession with her. Let's hope that at least this is the last we see of that horrible character.

Good start!

Warning: Spoilers
An intriguing start to the new season! It was good to have a more character focused episode to begin with, to resolve the previous season's storylines. Really happy to see that Maddie and Chim are back together, and it looks like Bobby and Athena are off to an intense start. Excited to see Hen be the interim captain, it was really heartwarming to see Bobby's faith in her. It was also good to see that Buck has officially moved on from his breakup, even if he was a bit annoying to Hen this episode. Hope to see Chimney and Eddie getting proper storylines of their own in the upcoming episodes, and I do hope that 911 does a single episode major disaster like May Day, last season, because that is what this show is best at.

Great start

Warning: Spoilers
I feel like this episode had everything season 5 did not and therefore it felt like an apology episode. Buck Eddie and Christopher always nice to see them. I live buck and Bobby's new relationship. I think the writing and emergancys were good too, yes the blimp crash didn't live up to the hope but the time it was on screen it was exhilarating. All in all a solid Solid priemere. I look forward to seeing where the writers take the charectors through season 6 and it doesnt end up like season 5, the bar is set high for the new season however based on next weeks synopsis I think we'll see a whole lot of action.

Best Season Premiere

Warning: Spoilers
I mean, what's not to love? The blimp, the ring scene, the car scene.. I mean come on now. Athena & Bobby's dynamic is ALWAYS superior. Buck & Eddie are raising their child Christopher which is so sweet. The 9-1-1 writers must know that we WANT them together. The signs are so clear that they are both bisexual characters figuring their lives out. I'm hoping Athena's parents are okay. She has been through so much it's going to be hard to see Athena go through yet ANOTHER situation. Chimney & Maddie moving in together... YES! Although I'm scared something is going to happen. The writers better not mess with them anymore, sick of that! Chief Henrietta Wilson just sounds right.

Warning: Spoilers
Blimp gone bad- thanks for not making it last three episodes. Running out of original ideas per show runner - need new show runner.

Thanks for making Buck act like a 9 year old - again! What is with you people?? You don't do that to the others. And by the end he's figured out his life plan with his arm chair. Better than with some bimbo I guess.

Good Diaz family scenes especially with Buck. That was good. Keep that up. The show needs to return to those types of dynamics.

Good explanation of Athena's patience with cruise director Bobby. Nice.

Chimney and Maddie moved a little fast considering all the talk about taking some time. One night of bad plumbing and "we're a family." Yeah. Makes sense.

Not enough Hen and where's Karen? May was good. No Harry. Hope he shows up soon.

And why did we have to waste screen time with the old fire matron/Barbie. That could have been handled with 2 lines from Bobby with his team. And we would not have had to see her! Please make that a permanent wrap on the not-believable Lucy - the power ranger firefighter. She can ruin a full 42 minutes of a show in less than a minute.

Stick with the mains and spend time on real emergencies and their lives. Take us back to seasons 2 & 3. Get the magic back. Or lose the chance to tell your story at all.

The core group!
TIN-370-91832720 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Listen... this show really thrives when it's the core group. This feels like the 911 of old which is extremely refreshing compared to the last two seasons. The focus on the mains and even when they weren't all together the vibes couldn't be beat.

The emergency kept me entertained, which has also been pretty rare.

It's clear how much Buck has grown, but I'm excited to see that they are hopefully focusing on his growth without a girlfriend. Chris always makes an ep for me and I always enjoy seeing him interact with Buck and Eddie.

I almost gave up on this show after the last two seasons and wasn't planning on watching this ep, but I'm glad I did. I hope they keep it up.

A Painfully Stupid Season Premiere
dharmabum-9061523 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Where the hell do I begin? The blimp? The horrible CGI? The writing on this show has become utterly silly. During the scene with the father and son golfing, I laughed myself sick. I don't think laughter was the desired reaction. Clearly the others who have given this puerile drivel a good rating are either being paid to do so or they aren't very bright. The only bright spots that remain are Angela Bassett and Aisha Hinds. Television, movies, and music have all become a vast wasteland of mind-numbingly average junk. I long for the days when the entertainment industry was actually entertaining and actually cared about creating worthwhile content.
