Cannes Directors’ Fortnight is launching a new People’s Choice audience award at its upcoming edition, running alongside the main festival from May 15-26.
The parallel section said the award, which comes with a €7,500 cash prize, was in keeping with the spirit of the event, which has always been open to members of the public alongside cinema professionals since its launch in 1969.
It will be the first audience award to be introduced in Cannes, across the Official Selection and the parallel sections of Directors’ Fortnight, Critics’ Week and Acid.
“Every year, in addition to professionals and other accredited guests, the Fortnight opens its doors to thousands of cinephiles from around the world, in order to share its selection in a welcoming setting, giving filmmakers the opportunity to meet the first audience for their films, and the audiences a chance to take part in Q&As with film teams,” Directors’ Fortnight said in a statement.

And Their Children After Them (Leurs Enfants Après Eux) is directed by French twin brother writing-directing duo Ludovic and Zoran Boukherma and adapted from Nicolas Mathieu’s Prix Goncourt-winning book of the same name. Exclusive: New York-based cultural institution Villa Albertine and Unifrance have announced the selection of French features due to be showcased in the 10th edition of their joint Young French Cinema program.
The initiative aimed at promoting films in the U.S. by emerging French filmmakers without domestic distribution will showcase 11 titles this year.
They include Marie Amachoukeli’s Cannes Critics’ breakout Àma Gloria, Virginie Verrier’s female soccer pioneer bio-pic Marinette and Erwan Le Duc’s father and daughter tale No Love Lost.
Under the program, the titles are made available for booking by arthouse cinemas, film societies, the Alliance Française network and universities across the U.S.
“The program mainly focuses on rising talents, from high-profile independent works to impactful dramas and powerful documentaries about the world around us,” the partners said in a joint statement.

Maciek Hamela is the director of the documentary “In the Rearview,” but directing was probably the least important job he had during the filming of his debut feature in Ukraine and Poland in 2022.
That’s because the film is a chronicle of countless journeys that took Ukrainians out of their war-torn country in the aftermath of the Russian invasion, ferrying individuals and families to Poland in search of safer places to live. For many of those journeys, Hamela himself served as the driver, with the film made up almost entirely of what happened inside the car during trips through the devastated landscape. He may have directed the movie, but there wouldn’t be a movie unless Hamela first got the refugees out of Ukraine.
“In the Rearview,” which played at the Toronto International Film Festival after premiering in Cannes’ Acid program, is a road movie that is simple in concept and devastating in execution.

"We need a shelter." Pathe in France has unveiled the official trailer for Acid, a horror movie from France about acid rain. Acide is the second feature film from French filmmaker Just Philippot, who last made the flesh-eating locusts horror film The Swarm a few years back. Acide initially premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year as one of their Midnight selections - still waiting for a US release date. During a heat wave, strange clouds start pouring down lethal acid rain, wreaking devastation and panic throughout France. In a world teetering on the edge, a girl and her divorced parents must join forces to confront and try to escape this climate catastrophe. The other synopsis calls the acid a "plague ravaging the world." Starring Guillaume Canet, Laetitia Dosch, and Patience Munchenbach. This actually looks pretty terrifying! He really pulled off making an acid rain horror movie look scary.

A Ukrainian influencer was pulled off the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, after she covered herself in fake blood on the steps up to the Palais, staging a protest in support of Ukraine.

Ilona Chernobai — a Ukrainian fitness trainer with one million followers on Instagram — walked the red carpet at Cannes in a blue and yellow dress, symbolizing the Ukraine flag. This year, policing has been beefed up and local authorities have banned demonstrations anywhere near the Palais as France grapples with violent anti-pension reform protests.
However, a couple of protestors have still managed to make themselves heard on the tapis rouge, even if the media pickup has been limited. On Sunday night, ahead of the screening of French movie Acide, an unnamed women wearing a dress in the colors of the Ukrainian flag doused herself in fake blood, seemingly in protest of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The woman was quickly jumped on by officials and escorted away. The episode was posted to Twitter by multiple sites and accounts, including the below footage culled from Afp:

Last year at Cannes, there was a notable void in the vocal female activism that has characterized the festival since the start of the #MeToo movement, as both Time’s Up U.S. and its French corollary, Collectif 50/50, had recently imploded in controversy.
