Review: Lizzy Caplan and Alison Brie make sibling rivalry sweet and funny in the relationship comedy Save The Date Stories featuring common Millennials and everyday dramas audiences can instantly relate with are the specialty of indie filmmaker Michael Mohan. Drawing from impressive work including music videos featuring MoneyGrabber by Fitz And The Tantrums, his short Ex-sex and his self-released, micro budget, black-and-white, buddy drama One Too Many Mornings, Mohan delivers his most accomplished feature yet, Save the Date. All of Mohan’s work is eye-catching but Save the Date also showcases his storytelling talents with a sweet romance that honestly captures all the ups and downs of loving someone more than they love you. At a recent screening at the Dallas International Film Festival, writer-director Michael Mohan had to narrate the opening of his second feature film when it began with no sound: "Right now you're hearing the sounds of a book store. There might be a car driving by, and that guy is about to drink coffee." Fortunately the projectionist was able to restore sound by the time the title sequence started, but the botched and awkward opening set the mood for the equally awkward and uncomfortable situations that befall Lizzy Caplan in the romantic-comedy, "Save the Date."
The light and endearing film (you can read our review from Sundance right here) follows a struggling illustrator and bookstore manager (Caplan) who struggles with emotional vulnerability and commitment in the run up to her sister's wedding (played by "Community" and "Mad Men" star Alison Brie). And although the cast is rounded out by a...

If there's one thing most romantic comedies can't seem to lock down it's real romance and substantial comedy. However, when it comes to the film festival circuit, plenty of films hit it right on the money. Whether it's (500) Days of Summer or even Garden State, Sundance is the place to find a real love story with heart and comedy. Save the Date easily fits into that category but with an even more grounded, even practical approach to love as a twenty-something. From the pressure of being engaged to the lead-up to a serious relationship, a lot can go wrong when it comes to romance. But thankfully, it can also go right. Director Michael Mohan (who previously came to Sundance with One Too Many Mornings and the short Ex-Sex) returns to the festival with this genuine, honest story that I wouldn't simply lump into the romantic comedy subgenre. To give it...

With so much going on, so much to see and hear and ogle, so many Paris Hilton sightings and free vodka sodas, it can be easy to forget the real purpose of the Sundance Film Festival: to showcase, and in many cases sell, quality independent films from young and ambitious filmmakers, many of whom are making the trek to the mountains for the first time.
But to earn a slot in competition, to really make an impression, filmmakers often need to secure some festival-friendly talent -- even before they secure funding -- and hope their film can break out of the pack. To do so, they often have to straddle a line between the personal and commercial, ensuring their films have a life beyond the the festival.
Luckily, many of these filmmakers have amassed networks and contacts that enable them to tell the story they want, while utilizing well-known performers...

#54. Save the Date - Michael Mohan Following in the footsteps of a Drake Doremus of going from ultra low budget indie to low budget indie, Michael Mohan parlayed his 2010 feature One Too Many Movies (read our interview with Mohan) with a 2011 filler and Sundance accepted short Ex-Sex with what we hope will be a Sundance preem for his latest, Save the Date. With a cast that includes Alison Brie, Lizzy Caplan, Martin Starr, Geoffrey Arend and Mark Webber, this would be a perfect item for the Premieres category - let the pre-fest bidding begin. Gist: Free spirited Sarah and responsible Beth are two sisters with different philosophies about love and relationships; Sarah is happy with the status quo and doesn’t see any reason to marry her musician boyfriend, Kevin, while Beth is obsessed with...

2010 was a big year for Michael Mohan. His first feature, One Too Many Mornings, premiered at Sundance (and can now be watched – in its entirety – on Hulu). He directed a music video for Fitz and the Tantrums that was blogged about by Justin Timberlake (no, really). And one year later he returns to Park City with a short film, Ex-Sex.
Mohan’s short about ex’s hooking up is gorgeous to look at, totally relatable, and so pitch-perfect in its bitter-sweetness that the only logical question would be: Couldn’t you make it as a feature? Please?
Characters as fleshed out and likable as the duo in Ex-Sex deserve an opportunity to get back together, make even more mistakes, break up again, and live on – fumbling their way through a longer film or TV series. The ex-couple of Mohan’s film clearly doesn’t want to say goodbye. Neither will the viewer.

The short films selected for the 2011 Sundance Film Festival are: U.S. Narrative Shorts This year's 44 U.S. short films were selected from a record 3,453 submissions.
