Smartly sidestepping the obvious comparison from the start – the line-reading of “Hello gorgeous” sounds more conversational, less sing-songy than the one etched in our brains for all these decades – Broadway’s new Funny Girl revival doesn’t so much make a grand play for replacement as a peaceful offering for coexistence: The show that made Barbra Streisand a musical theater icon likely won’t do the same for its latest star, but neither is it cause for grumbling how-dare-shes.
Opening tonight at the August Wilson Theatre, Beanie Feldstein is, it turns out, a perfectly fine choice for this Funny Girl, which is not to say she’s perfect, but rather that she’s on equal footing with a just-above-average musical that has always been dominated by several excellent songs and a legendary breakout performance that lifted the show – and its plodding 1968 movie adaptation – well beyond the sum of its parts.

The two-hour merge episode of “Survivor 42” featured the same hourglass twist as last season, making only five of the 12 remaining contestants eligible to be voted out. While multiple names were thrown out as possible targets leading up to the vote, including Jonathan Young and Maryanne Oketch, it was Lydia Meredith who was ultimately booted. While Lydia may not have been the most predicted castaway to be voted out at the “Survivor 42” merge, fans do agree she deserved to go home.

In our recent poll, which asked fans to pick the player they think deserved to be eliminated at the end of the episode, Lydia amassed 40 of the vote. The 22-year-old waitress was wishy-washy around camp, causing Omar Zaheer to target her by saying she was willing to vote out members of the majority alliance. While Omar’s real intentions were to keep his allies,...

Zach Wurtenberger had the unlucky distinction of being the first person voted out of “Survivor 42,” which premiered last week on CBS. The 22-year-old student started the game as an eager superfan, making early alliances with most of his tribemates. After losing the Immunity Challenge for his tribe, though, he was targeted by some of those same tribemates and was ultimately voted out unanimously. As it turns out, “Survivor” fans mostly agree with the tribe’s decision.
In our recent poll, which asked fans to pick who they think should have gone home from the Ika tribe, Zach earned a whopping 51% of the vote. The next highest was Tori Meehan at 29%, having caused a stir by going off alone into the jungle, with many of her tribemates assuming she was hunting for Hidden Immunity Idols. Next up was Rocksroy Bailey at 13%, who was also a potential target after putting in a...

Clint Eastwood is back in the saddle (and behind the camera) for “Cry Macho,” a Western about a washed-up horse breeder who agrees to kidnap a child for his former boss. The film premiered in movie theaters on Friday, but for those who want to watch from home, “Cry Macho” is also streaming exclusively on HBO Max for the next 31 days.
Eastwood, 91, directed and produced the film in addition to playing the lead role. He first received the story nearly 40 years ago, but the timing wasn’t right, the Oscar winner said in an interview with Parade magazine. “I knew the character needed some mileage on him, so I turned it down,” he revealed.

When we think of the term “auteur” or “auteur theory” we usually include directors such as Alfred Hitchcock or Stanley Kubrick given the diversity in their work, the amount of creative control they had and the recurring themes in their features. Especially the latter is interesting because Kubrick has managed to leave his footprint in the world of film, even though he has only produced a small number of films, in comparison to Hitchcock that is. Given this definition, director Satoshi Kon, although he helmed even a smaller number of features, should deserve the title as well, especially since features like “Paprika” or “Perfect Blue” are considered masterpieces of the genre and remain influential sources for filmmakers all over the world. In his documentary “Satoshi Kon, The Illusionist” French director Pascal-Alex Vincent, who previously made “Miwa, A Japanese Icon” about actor Akihiro Miwa, tells the story of arguably one of...

He speaks to Variety about the film, which has Pluto Film attached as its sales agency, and looks ahead to financing his adaptation of Julian Barnes’ novel “Porcupine.”
“Heavens Above” centers on Stojan, played by Goran Navojec, a simple-minded yet kindhearted man. When a freak accident puts a glowing halo above his head, he quickly becomes an object of veneration. His strong-willed wife Nada (played by Ksenia Marinkovic) isn’t amused by the attention her husband is attracting, so when a TV preacher suggests that sinful behavior will remove Stojan’s sainthood, Nada encourages him to commit as many bad deeds as possible.

Ninety years ago, two groundbreaking horror movies were made: Lugosi’s official chiller and a covert version – which might just be its superior
They came under the shadow of darkness – quite literally. Just as Dracula star Bela Lugosi was no doubt being tucked up for the night, director George Melford, cast and crew made their way on to the Universal studio lot in 1931 to shoot a Spanish-language version of the Bram Stoker 1897 horror novel, filmed using the same sets and costumes as the much more familiar Tod Browning masterwork.
Melford’s production of Dracula was what is known as a multiple-language version – Aka Mlv – which was one method by which the recently developed sound “talkie” aimed to reach non-English speaking audiences. Initiated by the 1927 release of The Jazz Singer – which featured 15-minutes of synchronised singing and talking – producers created prints in which dialogue was replaced with music and foreign inter-titles...

Production of The Bachelorette season 16 may be on hold, but have no fear, reality-tv-lovers. A new Bachelor spinoff is debuting April 13 on ABC, and it's a lot like Bachelor in Paradise, except there's no paradise . . . and no Bachelor alums . . . and a lot of singing. Confused? Allow us to explain. In The Bachelor: Listen to Your Heart, single men and women (all of whom are musicians or people who work in music) will live together and go on music-themed dates with each other. As ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke said, "Think The Bachelor in Paradise meets A Star Is Born."

"A visually playful biopic on Mexico's Ed Wood." -Variety
The accolades continue to roll in as Global Lens 2013 puts a spotlight on The Fantastic Wrld of Juan Orol, which recently played at the San Diego Latino Film Festival.
The story: Move over Ed Wood! Mexico's half-forgotten B-movie master, "involuntary surrealist" Juan Orol, receives a pitch-perfect tribute in this irresistible love letter to a self-made man of showbiz, whose career spanned nearly sixty films. In a glorious black-and-white flashback mingling movie-tainted memories of his Galician childhood, forced exile to Cuba and arrival in Mexico. The intrepid "Juanito" pursues failed careers as baseball player, boxer, bullfighter and gangster before landing in the movies-where failure kind of works for him. As Orol, Roberto Sosa exudes droll underdog charm, anchoring a fast-moving comedy and a homage to a golden age of cinema.
"A clever camp homage to Orol, this film playfully explores the filmmaker's cult legacy, including visuals that deftly evoke the vintage stock of bygone eras, and the budget aesthetic of its subject." -AFI Silver

Srdjan Dragojevic's The Parade Srdjan Dragojevic's black comedy Parada / The Parade has become the biggest box-office hit "in the former Yugoslavia in years," according to an Associated Press report. The film has sold more than 500,000 tickets and has been "equally acclaimed in Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia," where it's supposed to have been seen by more people than James Cameron's Avatar. In Dragojevic's Belgrade-set film, a Serbian anti-gay former gangster/war veteran (Nikola Kojo) recruits former fighters from other ethnic/national factions to protect a local gay couple (Milos Samolov, Goran Jevtic) attempting to organize a gay pride parade. As per The Guardian, at Belgrade's 2010 Gay Pride Parade, 5,000 police officers had to guard 1,000 marchers pelted by rocks and fire bombs. (Scenes shot at that parade are featured in the film.) On the surface, The Parade seems to have very little in common with Angelina Jolie's In the Land of Blood and Honey.

The Berlin International Film Festival, also called the Berlinale, is one of the world’s leading film festivals and most reputable media events. 2012 marks the first year Sound On Sight was present to attend. Merle has been posting her recaps while the rest of us have been paying close attention to the films receiving the most buzz.
Founded in West Berlin in 1951, the festival has been celebrated annually in February since 1978. With 274,000 tickets sold and 487,000 admissions it is considered the largest publicly-attended film festival worldwide. Up to 400 films are shown in several sections, but only a select twenty compete for the awards called the Golden and Silver Bears. This year the Italian film Caesar Must Die took home the Berlin International Film Festival’s top honour as best film. The film is set in Rome’s high-security Rebibbia prison and centres on the rehearsal, staging, and performing of Shakespeare’s...

Berlinale is, on the whole, a quieter festival than your really “big” outings — Sundance, Cannes, Toronto, even Nyff or Venice — but my interest is nevertheless piqued by this year’s winners, a list which comes to us from IndieWIRE. The top prize, that being the Golden Bear, went to Paolo and Vittorio Taviani (pictured above) for Caesar Must Die, their “documentary about criminals performing Shakespeare.” Adopt Films will be giving that a United States release later this year; reviews make me think it’s worth some of this early hype, thankfully.
Otherwise Bence Fliegauf‘s Just the Wind was bestowed with a Silver Bear for the Grand Jury Prize, while Barbara brought home a Silver Bear, Best Director for Christian Petzold. As with the main victors, the rest of the selections are far more devoid of “names” (and could more easily be considered esoteric) than any of the winners you...

Following up the initial announcement of titles, the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival revealed it will open with the period drama Les Adieux à la reine (Farewell My Queen) today. From director Benoît Jacquot, the drama stars Inglourious Basterds lead Diane Kruger, as well as Léa Seydoux who broke-out in Midnight in Paris and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol this year. Based on, Chantal Thomas’ novel we have the first stills of the film (from Lumiere via The Playlist) that follows the “first few days of the French Revolution from the perspective of the servants at Versailles.”
Kruger, who plays Marie Antoinette here, has only appeared in one big film following her post-Basterds role with Unknown, but I look forward to her future work, especially with this film. I thought Seydoux was great as an action villain in Ghotocol and excited to see her career rise. Check out the stills below,...
