Albie Thoms has said of this film: "In 1966 I reworked old film material, scratching the emulsion and coloring it with texta-color to make a crude film called "Unblooped" which was shown once to the Sydney University Architecture Society and then abandoned. Most of the Kinetic discoveries of that film were incorporated into "Bluto" which was made by scratching black leader with a wide assortment of tools, including files, penknives, rasps, and sandpaper. Using frame perforations as time measurements I was able to control the duration of scratches on the screen, adding a fourth dimension as I went. The initial inspiration came from the scratched and drawn elements of my first three films, with attention to Kandinsky, and especially to Klee's notion of "taking a line for a walk". After many hours composing the scratched images I then went over each one coloring them with different color values. Finally, many hours were spent scratching sound modulations in the soundtrack area of the film, creating an optical sound compatible with the scratched images. This was particularly difficult as the sound had to be scratched 26 frames ahead of the picture....".
This film was made by scratching and incising an opaque film-stock and the soundtrack and hand-coloring the film stock. Abstract images and concrete musical sound were produced from the process of wearing-away the emulsion.
