Based on Book #10 "Nowhere to Run"

If you are familiar with the work of Mr Box and his character Joe Pickett, you'll see that this season seems to be based on book number 10," Nowhere to Run". So far, as was season 1, to the show is fairly faithful to the book; as someone who has read them all, this always matters to me when there is a media adaptation. If you're silly enough to rate this lower than the seven, you aren't a fan and really have no business criticizing the work. Michael Dorman wouldn't have been my first pick to portray Joe Pickett but he has really brought the character to life for me. I wasn't even interested in reading past the first book until I saw the first season of the show. But I have read the rest since and have started on his second series because Box is just a fine author. So please even if you're not a fan give the series a chance I don't think you'll be disappointed unless you have no taste in fine entertainment.;-)

Based on Book 10 but ALSO (and mostly) "Blood Trail" (Book 8)

It was the series that led me to the books, and I'm glad they did, because I've become a huge fan of the books. And while I can see why some readers might be upset that the show doesn't follow the books to the letter, to expect that to happen is unreasonable. (Not nearly as unreasonable as those who are infuriated that a white character in the books is portrayed by a black actor in the show. GASP!)

Season 2 combines elements from two of the books, and in the final episodes those elements come together. It works, even thought it probably wasn't necessary; the storyline in "Blood Trail" would have made for a great TV season even without the interjection of some of the elements of "Nowhere to Run," (It is interesting that no one seems upset that the actor playing Klamath Moore looks nothing like the character described in the book...)

Season 2 sets the stage for more good seasons to come. Sadly, that won't be happening, since the series was cancelled in early 2024. But at least we still have the books; THAT series shows no signs of slowing down.

Almost dies over a fishing license?
So season 2 kicks-off with Joe taking a stand against a couple of wackos over a non-existent fishing license?! He's worried about the guy catching a few fish over the limit in a mountain stream? Kind of way over the top as a premise for a new season kick-off. Someone needs to put a little more thought into this. And apparently it's such a bizarre scenario that no one even believes Joe's story. The writers have Joe wound so tight over following all the rules, that his horse is killed, and he's nearly murdered as well, all over a few fish. Come on folks, you can certainly do better by Joe, and the audience.

Smothered the episode in too much tension, drama, and darkness
ssides-8541514 June 2023
My wife and I haven't gone back to show since this episode (loved 1st season). As the first season developed, viewers got to learn about Joe and his family and the challenges he and his family face at many levels, and the mystery and tension slowly ratcheted up. Most of all, you begin to care about these people. And by the time the season is over, I felt both exhausted and satisfied for the most part. Rinse and repeat?

That's exactly how this episode felt. So much all at once, with overwhelming darkness over everything. There is nothing to look forward to for this family.

The one bright spot were some of the sideshow characters, but again, felt like too much all at once.

We will likely go back to, but not at the moment.

Why
b-peacock-156-13740813 September 2023
Series 2 has, so far, been dreadful. The acting has been wooden, the characters all appear to be idiots and they still haven't changed the character of Nate into the giant white viking that he's supposed to be. The storyline has been taken from, I think, book 10 but its been butchered. The tracker character was so ridiculous and the turn of events so obvious and poorly done that it is hard to imagine that anyone thought it was okay to release this as a series. I struggle to imagine that this was a series made by professionals. The books have so much potential yet series one was a bit iffy and series 2 is, well, dreadful. Is wokism responsible for the Nate error?
