The Director Wants To Be The Star . Big Mistake For Real Innit Bruv
Theo Robertson4 February 2014
The pregnant girlfriend of Tommy Nix is assaulted causing her to miscarry . Tommy assaults a couple of police officers so he can be jailed in order to carry out his revenge on the men who committed the crime against his girlfriend

A simple revenge plot and perhaps mindful of this director Ron Scalpello goes out of his way to make sure the audience don't get bored by a simple tale of revenge . Massive big mistake because Scalpello almost undermines the movie with his " hey look at me " directorial flourishes that makes a MTV ident look like a static painting in comparison . The more you might be reminded of Alan Clarke's gritty realist cinema borstal drama SCUM the more Ronnie boy tries to distract you

I've no idea of Mr Scalpello's background but he's obviously influenced by adverts and music videos and never resists the temptation to have a blasting soundtrack with moody stylistic sharply edited visuals . You don't like drum and bass bruv ? Don't worry because in a few minutes we'll get a long montage with some indie guitar sounds . You want romance ? Good because we'll have a smoochy song for a flashback . You want the film to just get on with telling a story ? You're being a little bit optimistic for real bruv innit

This is something of a pity because Scalpello does manage to develop Paul Van Carter's screenplay intermittently but perhaps not often enough . I was very impressed with Joe Cole who very often doesn't get to say much but does manage to give an angst ridden performance and I look forward to seeing this young actor in more suitable material . Of the other performances the stand out is English Frank ( Not I take it his birth name ) as Jake the prison daddy . Yeah okay it a in your face OTT performance that possibly has no basis in reality but it is memorable and is in keeping with the entire style of the movie

OFFENDER ends up being a very curious film where less might have been more . It can never be accused of being boring or having a sluggish pace but it's a film that can't be taken seriously either . In other words it's disposable entertainment

Really enjoyed this
frompagescreen1 January 2013
2012 was an amazing film for British Films, something that I realised very early on when I checked out at least 72 of them last year. Offender was the first UK film that I watched in 2013(on DVD). Excellent film with a basic yet very effective storyline and some wonderful performances from the leads and the supporting cast. A 21st century version of 'Scum' with a better storyline. Definitely worth checking out. 2012 gave the film world, great British films like Deviation, GBH, Hard Boiled Sweets. Im very happy to be able to add Offender to the list of films that I recommend.

The DVD is available now to purchase from main outlets.

The lengths one man will go to for revenge
smspencer6913 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I was intrigued as to why this was scoring so low on IMDb yet there was a suspicious lack of scaithing reviews - a film that is so hated usually inspires a few rants, yet nothing. So I decided to judge for myself.

I've read comparisons to Scum and Prophet, obvious comparisons due to the location being in a borstal, but as the story was of a man seeking vigilante justice comparisons to Death Wish and the totally implausible Law Abiding Citizen spring to mind.

Tommy his a hard working youth who's starting a family with his girlfriend when his life is turned upside down by a gang of four armed robbers. It seems clichéd but at least the back story is not quite as obvious as it appears on paper as you learn how Tommy got to this point with just a hint of the man he is on the outside through flash-backs. Now if you can believe the slightly unlikely main plot device that Tommy can commit a crime to get sent to both the same jail and wing as the men/boys he wants justice from then you can buy in to the story - as far as I'm concerned that is the only weak point.

Joe Cole is convincing as Tommy, a man who's world has been turned upside down and has gone to extreme lengths to rid himself of the guilt and anger he feels. There's a strong cast who bring a believability to these characters and the portrayal of borstal is grim and harsh yet feels very real.

The were 18 people in the 16:40 Monday afternoon showing I went to and none walked out. I don't think it's a classic but I gave it a 7/10 and would recommend to anyone who likes a decent British movies along the lines of Ill Manors and Kidulthood to go and see it whilst it's still showing.

Good prison film.... would be better without English Frank
luke-mori198625 September 2021
Very enjoyable well made film however English Frank is not good. Proper crap actor, not a much better rapper to be honest.

Overall decent movie lacking good actors.
shock75415 March 2014
I found this movie to be somewhat entertaining. However you can't ignore the complete lack of acting ability and intimidation factor that English Frank presents. If he were to walk into an actual prison walking and acting as he does. I have a feeling he would not be the "boss" but the joke of the prison. His acting abilities annoyed me throughout the movie. He was terrible! The goal isn't to look like a bully at recess during your teen years. The goal is to look like an intimidating, overpowering, and scary inmate. I did feel that Joe Cole did a great job as the main character. Putting him up against a "gangster wannabe" who is very bad at acting definitely hurt what could have been a much better movie.

It's Scum Jim but not was we know it
skinhead-58 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
It's no quite Scum but this it is more of an updated version for the 21st Century.

Alright, it's nothing like that in Borsral (YOC), you simply just don't wander a prison like that. You can clearly tell that the building is made up and done for film impact.

Joe Cole is the shiner here, he carried it all off with an element of realism (I know people like him) but English Frank character is very strange indeed. He has a very unusual gait that makes him walk around like a penguin and speak like he has golf balls in his mouth and spends the whole film pouting. I am not sure that if the directors filmed him like that or it was a chosen style but in some places it's a bit ridiculous and comical.

The filming style is very good though, some shots seen to over exposed or frame dropped to give it that technique first seen in 28 days Later. It's the mixture of this and standard shots that makes it good to watch.

The violent scenes are well done and the attack on the jewellery shop is excellent as I have seen this happen on the Roman Road in East London.

The other actors are pretty good as well and having wandered around estates in London people really do talk like that. I think someone took a bit of time studying accents and mannerisms and for once didn't hold back no matter how strange this talk may seem to middle class UK.

Its a good twist on the Scum, but if you are trying to get parallels to Scum you won't. It's different, more realistic albeit the sets and locations are totally false. It also didn't stay clear of issues like Muslims been Muslims just to get extra facilities which was good. Although I was surprised they stopped short of a rape scene that is seems mandatory for this genre but you can assume it happens with the shots of Tommy in the solitary confinement.

Worthy of a Blu Ray.....

Stereotypical waste of time
rashford-592-6576702 September 2013
It confounds me how many people find this a 'realistic' film blah blah. A "kid" with no record ends up on the same cell block as offenders with multiple convictions? A youth facility with only one female officer? The uncontrolled behaviour of offenders and staff alike is ridiculous and "realistic?" And I don't think I saw any one offender who looked less than 20 and most looked much older. Even Cole in the lead role was 24 when this was made and he's the youngest looking of the bunch.

The injuries are typical film make-up and if you think a washroom beating leaves you with a bruised eye, you don't know "realistic." The probation officer works alone, doesn't call police, then leaves work in the stereotypical dark and gets punched out in front of typically no witnesses, even though she was initially terrified and HAD to know something could happen. Duh. And she has a shiner to show for it and loses the baby. OMG. How contrived. How stereotypical.

Those of you who think this movie has ANY redeeming qualities, you need to see more films. You also need a prison tour. A realistic stint in prison is boring and I get the need to spice it up. But don't be predictable and stereotypical to the point of insulting. Waste of time.

Big Film
seany_c18 January 2013
Watched this at the Cinema months back and hadn't seen it since, so I decided to buy it the other day on DVD. A brilliant film, not entirely original but a fresh take on a done subject. 'Offender' stands comparison against the great British films of today, such as 'Kidulthood', 'Adulthood', 'Harry Brown', 'Ill Manors' and so on. After a blistering opening sequence, the film continues to impress with its bleak vision of prison life. Joe Cole stars as Tommy, the good young lad who thrown into hell when his girlfriend is assaulted. He's out for revenge. Need I say more. With his moody baby face and mental transformation, Joe Cole is sensational as Tommy. You can feel his pain and anguish and you want nothing more than for him to get his revenge. The other performances are good too. English Frank is both laughable and menacing. The soundtrack is superb at times, the settings feel genuine and the violence is swift. While this isn't cheery stuff, it's sure to impress and entertain certain viewers. Cole really delivers and I hope he goes far after this. ****/*****

Pretty good, Scum for 2012
January3913 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
For those old enough this is kind of a Scum remake (just not quite as good), our lead loses his girlfriend after she miscarries their baby and he wants revenge on the criminals who (possibly) caused it... How does he do that? Gets banged up so he can beat them up.

Our lead is then banged up and so begins his quest to avenge his girlfriend, tackling the bad guys one by one without them knowing who or what is doing. Thrown in the bent guard who enjoys partying with the bad guys and you get the picture. It's him against the world. His story is told through a series of flashback and dreams and other than that you never really get to know him...

Yes, it sounds dodgy but give it time and it is actually quite good, the lead plays the part well - you can never really work him out as to whether he is a crazy or just really angry and on the edge. The supporting cast are a little weaker, not bad just weaker.

There are also scenes where truth and realism take a back seat - like the 2 ZX10 bikes they have, how did they obtain 2 bikes in the same colour in the same place at the same time during the riots all with matching helmets!? - and better yet they can ride them like demons! Then after the attack on the shop they nick another car (BMW this time) and drive to the shop for reasons we never find out, only to encounter the police investigating the crime - really, what a surprise!!! Would any aspiring criminal (been doing since he been Sh**ting rusks, apparently) do that? I doubt it. I could not help feeling that the burglary got shoehorned in at the last minute to beef up the menace of the gangsters...

Overlook these small flaws and give it a chance and it's a pretty good film. I doubt it will win awards or Oscars and we probably will never consider it a classic BUT it does draw you in, you do care about the lead and if we rated films on how believable they are (aside the small errors) then this film would do better than most blockbusters.

6/10 for me, only just though...

To sum up, give it a chance and you might be surprised!! I have a feeling we might be seeing more of the lead in the future.

Poor, fodder for the NEET's...
dianataylorlondon27 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Trite contrived rubbish, probation offices with people working solo, wooden chairs in prison being smashed up as a weapon, do I need to go on... A film for the NEET's to sit at home and admire their Bredren in der yards innit. A sad pronouncement on what qualifies as entertainment. Kids conversing in restricted code. Prison officers portrayed as uncaring drug taking thieves. Portraying the justice system as broken beyond repair. Prisons a hot bed of homosexual rapes and loan sharking... Where there is nothing but violence and sedition, a very sad indictment on what passes for credible cinema. Truly Disappointing.

grows on you, powerful
ambam1210 August 2012
its an update on scum but very different from recent film dog-pound it actually goes beyond both those due to a truly stunning performance from lead actor Joe Cole who is a newcomer.

Cole is amazing, he has intensity and focus and emotion that reminds me paddy considine sometimes, and also tom hardy in Bronson.

the rest of supporting cast are strong especially the evil prison warden. lots of shaky camera work and a good soundtrack.

very violent sometimes too violent in places, and the ending of this film flips it on you. but after having left it just grows on you and you think more and more about the lives of the two main characters at the end, and what must have happened to them beyond where the story left off, the sign of a good story always if it rattles round in your head as you leave the cinema.

its not really comparable to a Prophete that was a very different film, but this film becomes the new Scum for this century and thanks to actor Cole who will be a star it is powerful enough to be better than Winstone's film from the 80s.

Starred up is premier league, Offender is Sunday league
damienjose22 August 2022
Starred up absolutely blew me away so I followed it up by watching this and I was very disappointed. The acting is corny especially Jake and the screw. Tries to be "edgy" and "cool" but fails miserably at both.

soapdodgerz8 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
what a pile this film is.the comparisons to scum are meaningless, this is not in the same league.the beginning should sum this film up, a young lad beats up two riot cops with ease, then only gets two years, rubbish during the uk 2011 riots the sentencing was much harsher for far less.then we are taken on a journey to see why he did it.don't bother ,its a waste of time.i used to love these sort of dramas a sense of freedom ,made in Britain scum etc, they where not perfect, but had some sense of reality. are the writers of this garbage living on a different planet? sadly i think they are.making this type of film to appeal to the youth is a cynical marketing ploy. yeah there are lots of angry young men out there. but to tackle this complex social problem in such a one dimensional way is crass and insulting to viewers.

Some of the worst acting I have seen in a long time. The head thug is probably the worst actor I have ever witnessed hahaha. White guy speaking like he's black and doing it very poorly.

very solid action film
dogboyad14 August 2012
i too was suspicious of the low scores this film is getting (too many haters out there who don't like the genre?). Anyway it was packed when i saw at cineworld on Saturday night and got a good reception from a mostly young crowd. The lead actors are very good, some of them fresh talent. Joe Cole from TV's Skins is a revelation. The film goes at a fast pace and has some great fight scenes. Not really a remake of Scum but more a contemporary Brit thriller. You should like it if you have a taste for films like Taken and the Bourne trilogy. Lifted above the hoodie genre tag by the eclectic score of new music and classic soul tunes. Offender deserves to be a hit as its something a bit different from recent British films like Adulthood, Ill Manors etc.

Not worth watching but decent soundtrack
blindlemon-376-13266325 January 2013
This movie has a good start, the 'justice'-theme made clear in the early parts of the film. It's professionally done, nice camera-work and thought out takes.

But it's also obvious very soon that you're watching 'the Vicky Pollard's brother in jail show'. This one hour and 41 minutes are of the same level as Brits on holiday or at a soccer match (or on their own island for that matter): getting sloshed and high and fighting and ruining it for everybody else. Ali G or Borat (with or without mankini) would have fit in nicely.

But.. The music is very pleasing. As a matter of fact I just watched this C-film with my guitar plugged in and jamming along to the various music styles that you get to hear. Nice adaption of known songs, different styles, great! I'm thinking of putting some things in my loop machine and make jam tracks out of it.

Maybe you got interested after reading this review, but I think you should just download the soundtrack (if available).

(IMDB: why do I have to change correctly spelled words?)

A different take on the usual British prison drama film
tr9122 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Offender is a slightly different take on the standard British prison drama films. There are lots of similarities with the characters inside and all the trouble that happens but this film had a different storyline & style.

The plot revolves around Tommy, portrayed superbly by Joe Cole, who is sent to a young offenders institute after he assaults two police officers at the start of the film. I as the viewer assumed he was just a thug who done this on a regular basis but as the film progresses we see certain flashbacks which explain his reasons differently, of course it is still an awful thing to do but he is out for revenge once he gets there. I just liked it general that it had an actual storyline rather than just being another standard prison film where every scene takes place inside.

The cast mostly do a very good job and I was intrigued all the way through, the emotional sides of things also felt very realistic. One thing I didn't like so much was the camera seemed to be very shaky with a lot of scenes which seemed slightly unnecessary. But overall I thoroughly enjoyed the film and I feel it is slightly underrated on IMDb.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is easily offended by bad language and very brutal violence. If you enjoyed this film I also recommend 'Starred Up' starring Jack O'Connell. I would say that one is slightly better but 'Offender' still gets a solid 8/10 from me.

bad flic with lots of angry young men
GoatOfNeptune20 October 2021
Boring story, its like a competition of young men, trying to look angry. Not much plot, not much acting, very stereotype and forgetable. Better watch the hunger or starred up with jack oconnel.

Joe Cole's weird breathy intensity
ginge_mickey19 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Offender has some truly brutal scenes such as the harrowing miscarriage but then several weaker scenes such as the man having a violent fight scene and then 'slipping' to his death on the bathroom floor.

English Frank is a terrible actor, he did manage to generate some hatred as a villain but his performance as a gangster was cringeworthy.

Joe Cole also isn't at his best and brings a weird, breathy intensity to his character that didn't really work. Shaun Dooley has some good moments but similarly doesn't really work playing the undercover gangster style role.

The film is short and sweet but nothing to write home about.

Good film!
maj_kill15 August 2013
This is a great film. It shows people how life is spent at prison, and it also shows how the system works. English Frank played a great role alongside Scorcher. They both showed rivalry. Mic Righteous also seemed to be in this film, he has great future ahead of him, Mic Righteous's appearance was very good for him, because its easy for people to recognise who is his. This film is fantastic and i hope similar films release. I hope people recognise this film. This film doesn't only deserve awards, it also deserves more people viewing it. it is mainly because of viewers films get noticed. I humbly request viewers to watch this film. Remember it might be because of you thing might change for the people that are being discriminated. I am happy to right such a review on this film. I hope this film gets bigger and bigger.

Life imitating art imitating life?
dt-1395925 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I think of the stereotypical views that the UK public hold about prisons. Great storyline - however unrealistic it may be but there are some startling realities between the films prison setting and some young offenders institutions in the UK. For example- Feltham and the "gladiator wars" in the 90s where the screws would put bets on which inmate would win a fight after padding them up together. There is a screw like the the main bad one in offender and a main bully like English frank in every jail. Maybe they go on a bit more subtle in reality but the hanging scene, the corruption, violence and drug dealing is all very real. Revenge to that extent is real. The probation officer storyline is a bit far fetched but hey it's a film n think english frank gives a gritty, edgy performance as a wannabe badman. I think the director captures the audience and keeps it watching regardless of how unreal the storyline gets. It's a sad ending and those kinds of situations to happen. Ppl go in on short sentences and end up dying or getting life's off. That's a big reality what some ppl find hard to grasp. The victim becomes the victor. The good man becomes the bad man like a flick of a switch !! Great film. Emphasis on the word film and I like English frank's acting he's a bad man yet funny n "what can they do to a man like me- NOTHING"!! Lol.
