Private Screenings: Liza Minnelli (2010)

*** (out of 4)

Turner Classic Movies host and historian Robert Osborne sits down with Liza Minnelli to discuss her career and of course her famous parents. Running just under 45-minutes I think a lot of people are going to walk away from this interview rather disappointed. What we get is pretty good but at the same time you can't help but feel somewhat disappointed that there isn't more discussed. It's pretty clear that Minnelli is a lot more familiar with her father Vincente so a lot of the talk is about his films as well as several private stories that Liza had about him. There's some talk about Judy Garland but not nearly as much. Osborne mentions that he never knew the Liza that gets talked about in gossip columns so he wanted this interview so that people could see the person he knows. That's a nice thought but I wonder why so much stuff goes unanswered or simply doesn't get asked. We learn that she grew up in a neighborhood that also had Bogart and Lana Turner yet she's never asked about them. I'm sure she knew the likes of Mickey Rooney or various other people in her parents lives but we never hear anything. In terms of her own career we hear about the Oscar win but very little else and there's not even any mention of her working with Martin Scorsese. We do get Minnelli discussing her favorites works of her parents and she has some nice behind the scenes stuff including her first screen role in IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME and a certain issue with her panties.
