- Unlike fellow inmates on the prison bus, Bode Donovan's joy to start at a Californian penitentiary program to earn sentence shortening by volunteering in a forest fire brigade is cut short when he finds out to be sent to the one station he wanted to avoid: his home town. While desperately seeking to be transferred quickly, even at the risk of return to prison for illicit phone use, he's a model of zeal and commitment. His program handler Manny Perez is impressed, but fire chief Vince Leone -obsessed with obtaining better equipment to prevent a historical fire disaster repeating- seems to hold an insurmountable grudge.
