Julian Schnabel : My expression is an expression of the world, not of the self. It's an expression of what I think things seem like now. The job of the painting is not just to sit on the wall and decorate a room. I think that its job is to embody certain meaning that can affect whoever is looking at it, and change their recognition of what life is. Maybe that's the job of the artist.

Julian Schnabel : It's interesting, I think, to paint images that are violent. I don't know why it is, why do people stop when there's a car accident, or look at somebody when they're jumping out of a building? When I was younger I would see these kinds of images and thought well, these paintings of these things are never as horrifying as actually seeing these things happen. I think the important thing to remember about that is not to cloud what the intention of the artist is.
