Episode one of handsome new BBC supernatural period drama The Living And The Dead feat. Colin Morgan ends on a gripping hook…
This review contains episode 1 spoilers.
Ashley Pharoah, the creator of The Living And The Dead, made his name writing genre TV with a twist. He and Matthew Graham added a time travel mystery to the police procedural in Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes, then spliced the supernatural with court drama in Eternal Law.
Pharoah’s new series The Living And The Dead plays the same game. It’s a traditional Victorian ghost story with Something Else Going On. Two events in the first episode alert viewers to this fact – the vapour trail of a modern airplane in the 1894 Somerset sky and the closing sight of a twenty-first century woman, iPad in hand, walking around the nineteenth-century farmhouse in which the story is set.

BBC America and BBC One have announced the new series The Living and the Dead, written by Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham, co-creators and writers of Life on Mars, Ashes To Ashes and Eternal Law.
The synopsis:
Somerset, England, 1888. A land and a community on the edge of monumental change, on the great hinge between ancient traditional ways and an industrial, scientific future. A land of ghosts and myths, poltergeists and demons - if there was ever a time for those ghosts to rise out of the ground, this would be that time.

Law and Order: UK is British television's most underrated crime drama.
Returning to ITV tonight for its eighth series, the popular procedural remains a hit with viewers - having consistently pulled in 5-6m viewers since it launched in 2009 - yet receives only passing attention from critics and rarely attracts any major awards recognition.
Law and Order: UK is now ITV's old stalwart - a reliable performer guaranteed to bring in an audience and exactly the sort of safe bet the channel could bank on to fill a gap in 2013 when its supernatural series Eternal Law, expected to be a long-runner, failed to secure a second series.
But why isn't the show held in higher esteem? It's possible that the Law & Order mantle is as much a blessing as a curse. It delivers brand recognition, yet ties to the now-departed Us series might lead some to dismiss the...

Actor who played Bert Lynch in BBC police drama Z-Cars and appeared in shows ranging from Doctor Who to Nightingales
The actor James Ellis (also known as Jimmy), who has died aged 82, was the longest-serving original cast member of the hugely popular BBC television series Z-Cars. When Z-Cars began in 1962, it represented a major change in the way the police were characterised in fiction. The BBC police series Dixon of Dock Green had been running for seven years, with Jack Warner playing the understanding, avuncular police constable Dixon. Z-Cars, by contrast, had the actors Stratford Johns and Frank Windsor making cynical remarks about the death of a murdered police colleague whose funeral they were attending, and Ellis, as Constable Bert Lynch, hearing from a colleague how he beats up his wife, without doing anything about it. Z-Cars attempted to show how moral anarchy in the rundown industrial area of the...

Samuel West has revealed that he wants to replace Matt Smith on Doctor Who.
It was announced last Saturday (June 1) that Smith would be departing the BBC sci-fi drama at Christmas.
"I've always wanted to play Doctor Who," West told the Radio Times.
"They can't go on getting younger forever. Every Doctor Who, almost without exception, has been younger than the previous one. Eventually we'll just have this glittering foetus - that's not going to work."
West - whose recent credits include ITV series Mr Selfridge and Eternal Law - added that his Doctor would be "slightly other".
"I remember when I first started watching it, he was a little bit like a frightening grandfather," said the 46-year-old actor. "I don't want to be a grandfather but I don't think he should be cuddly."

Mayday co. BBC
Mi5 veteran Peter Firth returns to BBC One during the first week of March in the new drama Mayday. The show is the brainchild of Whitechapel writers Ben Court and Caroline Ip, and like that show, Mayday focuses on the investigation of a grizzly murder. However, rather than placing the police detectives at the center of the action, Mayday is centered around the possible culprits and the friends and family members who may or may not reveal their suspicions to the police.
Peter Firth plays Malcolm – a man whose own wife thinks him capable of killing. His co-stars include Lesley Manville (Cranford), Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda), Sam Spruell (Eternal Law), and Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones). Precise broadcast details have yet to be revealed.

Foyle's War

Earlier this year Acorn Media bought the rights to the British detective series Foyle’s War. The cast and crew are currently working on a new series of the war time drama but in the interim Acorn Media have put together a new DVD box set of the Best of Foyle’s War.
The show centers around Detective Chief Inspector Foyle who is doing his best ignore the ravages of war and focus on solving grizzly crimes. Michael Kitchen plays the lead role and he is in the mold of classic British actors and he is well suited to playing the stiff upper lipped Dci Foyle. Kitchen apparently selected the six stories that are featured in the six disc set. The cast involvement in the DVD doesn’t end there. Click Here To Read Our Matthew Graham Interview
ITV’s Eternal Law is not your conventional legal drama but Life on Mars co-creators Matthew Graham and Ahsley Pharoah are experts at turning unorthodox ideas into smash hits. Episode one began with wide-eyed angel Tom (Ukweli Roach) crashing to Earth. He was greeted by Zak (Samuel West) who is as world weary as his new colleague is fresh faced. The duo soon found themselves representing a seemingly indefensible killer in court while the much easier task of the prosecution was being handled by Richard Pembroke (Tobias Menzies) – a fallen angel!
When you read the plot on paper it sounds weirder than it appears on TV because Graham and Pharoah are somehow able to make extraordinary things seem fairly normal onscreen. While...

Sherlock was already starting to look rather ordinary after his run in with Moriarty but in A Scandal in Belgravia he really met his match. Lara Pulver (Mi5) played Irene Adler, the dominatrix, blackmailer and mistress of disguise who seemed to melt his ice cold heart. The whole episode was like a long rally at the French open when you keep thinking one player has hit a winner only for the other player to keep the ball alive. In the end, Sherlock finally outwitted her although you rather feel that she will come out on top the next time they meet.

The Great Expectations finale was the best episode so far as Ray Winstone and Douglas Booth took us on an emotional roller coaster that ended in tragedy. Winstone gave a low-key performance as Magwitch that worked perfectly in conjunction with Booth’s emotional take on Pip. The duo were the focal point of the episode although David Suchet also gave a commanding performance as the mysterious Mr Jaggers.
My criticisms of the first two episodes were directed at the excessive use of fog, the intrusive music and the fact that the Miss Havisham character didn’t really work. In this episode they dispensed with the fog machine altogether and the music was toned down too which left Havisham as the only issue. Her reverse phoenix scene was probably meant to...

After a slow start in part one, Great Expectations came to life tonight thanks in large part to Douglas Booth, Harry Lloyd and Tom Burke. The young trio brought three fascinating and very different characters to life while veterans David Suchet, Ray Winstone and Frances Barber further enhanced their own reputations as great character actors.
Booth has a bit of the Hayden Christensen about him although he is a far better actor. Lloyd was thoroughly believable as the happy-go-lucky Herbert Pocket and Tom Burke was suitably menacing as the brooding Bentley Drummle. Anyone who has ever lived in the Home counties knows that even today, at least one obnoxious Bentley Drummle can be found in every village and Burke played that timeless character very well.

Samuel West (Van Helsing) plays a hard-nosed angel named Zak who was sent to Earth by the creator “Mr Mountjoy” and tasked with keeping humanity out of trouble. Working alongside Zak is Tom (Ukweli Roach) who is an idealistic newcomer. However, the good work being done by the duo is being rapidly undone by a dark angel named Richard Pembroke (Tobias Menzies) who just happens to work for a rival law firm.
The unconventional nature of the show will come as no surprise to fans of Graham and Pharoah who enjoyed the duo’s smash hit BBC dramas Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes.

Josh Bolt
ITV have commissioned a 90 minute adaptation of Michelle Magorian’s novel Just Henry. Josh Bolt will take on the title role and Sheila Hancock, Dean Andrews and Elaine Cassidy are among the star-studded cast. The screenplay is being written by Michael Chaplin (Monarch of the Glen) and is expected to air some time in 2012.
