Fremantle revenues dropped 9.2% in the first quarter of 2024 to €395m, with parent company Rtl blaming ‘timing effects’ of show deliveries in the UK, Italy and Germany for the fall.
Rtl said it was confident Fremantle will make up the shortfall in the second quarter, citing the delivery of productions such as the second season of The Responder and new thriller series Nightsleeper for the BBC in the UK as well as season 19 of America’s Got Talent for NBC in the US.

Exclusive: Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Joy, Salma Hayek Pinault and Brendan Fraser will star in Sacrifice, a film co-written and to be directed by Romain Gavras. Like his last film Athena that premiered last Venice and was released on Netflix, Sacrifice has a similar combustible and propulsive anarchy coursing through the film.
This is closer to satire, but the script by Gavras and Will Arbery was strong enough to compel the leads to commit over the span of four days since the script was sent to talent. More actors will be set shortly, and I expect that the project — CAA Media Finance is selling the world with Rocket Science — won’t have a lot of territories left by the time buyers hit the Croisette. All the elements are there to launch Gavras as a major writer-director, here making his first English-language film.
Here is the logline: a high end charity gala...

The 48-year-old actress and her 15-year-old daughter produced the show, which is an adaptation of the 1983 movie of the same name. They walked the red carpet together during opening night at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.
After the show was over, their celebrations continued with dinner at Cipriani, and Pax joined in on the fun!
Keep reading to find out more…
For the dinner, Angelina looked as elegant as ever in a bronze dress with a matching cape. She finished off the look with a perfect red lip.
Pax found the balance between formal and casual, pairing a blazer with a white t-shirt and sneakers.

Rtl Group, the European media giant that owns Fremantle, saw revenues and profits slip in the second half of 2023, amid a stubbornly weak market for traditional TV advertising.
Group revenue at Bertelsmann-owned group was down 5.4 percent to €6.2 billion ($6.8 billion), which Rtl attributed to “lower TV advertising revenue and lower Fremantle revenue.” Adjusted profits (Ebita) fell to €782 million ($855 million) from €922 million ($1 billion) over the same period in 2022.
TV ad revenue across the group dropped 8.2 percent year-over-year, a sign that free-to-air television in Europe continues to struggle. Revenue from Rtl’s in-house streaming operations — Rtl+ in Germany and Hungary, and France’s M6+ — were up an impressive 72.6 percent to €283 million ($310 million) from €164 million ($179 million) a year earlier, but the company still booked €179 million ($196 million) in start-up losses for its streaming operations.

Two of Italy’s top producers – The Apartment’s Lorenzo Mieli and Wildside’s Mario Gianani – are leaving their Fremantle-backed companies.
Between them, Mieli and Gianani’s companies have produced many of Italy’s most acclaimed features of recent years.
A Fremantle spokesperson confirmed their departures, describing the moves as amicable, and told Screen: “We are finalising a way to continue to work together in a different structure.”
Gianani’s Wildside is behind 2023 Italian box office smash There’s Still Tomorrow, as well as festival hits The Eight Mountains, Saverio Costanzo’s Finally Dawn and Disney+ series The Good Mothers.

Nicola Maccanico, a former Warner Bros. and Sky Italia senior exec, has been spearheading the radical overhaul of Rome’s Cinecittà Studios since April 2021, when the government-owned facilities embarked on a mission to secure a multi-million dollar loan provided by the European Union’s post-pandemic recovery fund.
Three years later, the studios are equipped with 20 state-of-the-art soundstages, including one of Europe’s largest LED walls, and have become a magnet for Hollywood productions such as Roland Emmerich’s gladiator series “Those About to Die.” As the production hiatus brought on by the Hollywood strikes eases up, more U.S. shoots are soon to come, he vows.
Below, Maccanico discusses with Variety what he’s accomplished in terms of reviving the studios and what remains to be done.

Prolific Italian producer Lorenzo Mieli is known for backing Luca Guadagnino (“Bones and All”), Paolo Sorrentino, and Angelina Jolie (“Without Blood”; she also stars in his Pablo Larrain production “Maria”). However, his first American film, Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” was a very different kind of challenge.
“I would have never thought of myself as someone able to put together financing,” Mieli said on the phone from Italy. “I understood that in this moment in time, as producers, we want to protect the job of filmmakers. This is what we need to do.”
Based on Presley’s memoir “Elvis and Me,” Mieli struggled to hold the project together: first against resistance from the Elvis Presley estate, and then having to find another international distributor after Sony fell out in response to the estate withholding rights to Presley’s music.
In the end, all of the sow’s ears became silk purses.

Angelina Jolie has two of her kids by her side on the set of her upcoming movie Maria!
The Oscar-winning actress was joined by her sons Maddox, 22, and Pax, 19, while heading to work on another day of filming on Sunday (October 15) in Peloponnese, Greece.
Angelina was first seen on set last week, almost exactly one year after the project was first announced. She is starring in the upcoming film about the late opera singer Maria Callas, which is director Pablo Larrain‘s third biopic about a prominent female figure. He previously directed Natalie Portman in Jackie and Kristen Stewart in Spencer.
Pax previously worked as a still photographer for Angelina‘s 2017 movie First They Killed My Father and he also worked in the assistance director department for her upcoming movie Without Blood.
Maddox was a producer on First They Killed My Father and a trainee on her 2015 movie By the Sea.

It might be too early to call it, but The Hollywood Reporter Roma may have given the best party of the 80th Venice Film Festival.
THR Roma, the first European edition of The Hollywood Reporter, threw a starry and glam but also surprisingly chill bash Sunday night at their festival villa, a stone’s throw from The Excelsior Hotel on the Lido. THR Roma had its official launch, in Rome, in April but the Venice bash marked its international coming out, and the group used the occasion to present its first stand-alone print edition (more on that later).
There were shades of Pablo Sorrentino’s famed party sequence in The Great Beauty as a who’s who of the Italian film and fashion industries — among them the cast of Venice festival opener Comandante, including Italian superstar Pierfrancesco Favino and director Edoardo De Angelis, Adagio filmmaker Stefano Sollima, and Valentino’s...

Exclusive: It’s a scorching 90 degrees in Rome at the end of July, but producer Lorenzo Mieli isn’t breaking a sweat.
In the course of three days, he’s fully booked, first working into the night with Luca Guadagnino on the filmmaker’s new Daniel Craig movie, Queer, which wrapped shooting in June at Rome’s Cinecittà. Then Mieli’s presence is required in Naples the next day on the set of Paolo Sorrentino’s new untitled movie centering around the character, Parthenope. There’s talk of the production shooting on the water — which is always complicated for any movie. While there were ocean shots in Sorrentino’s Oscar-nominated international film, Hand of God, what’s required here on Parthenope is a whole other level. Then Mieli will make a pitstop on the fourth and final season of the HBO series My Brilliant Friend in Caserta, outside Naples, which he executive produces.

Pablo Larraín’s Maria Callas biopic starring Angelina Jolie, a mystery thriller penned by Bridgerton’s Sarah Dollard and a revenge drama created by Jim Keeble and Dudi Appleton are the first projects to emerge from Fremantle and Ibi Investment House’s €150M ($162.7M) Scripted Fund.
Unveiled today, the fund will see Fremantle label’s high-end TV and film projects funded via a bespoke model by the Israeli investor, which will “fast-track the production of each project,” according to the pair. Ibi, which is making its first foray into international film and TV production, will work closely with Fremantle and talent to greenlight each project and find the best route to market.
As CEO of the fund, Fremantle-owned Abot Hameiri boss Guy Hameiri will oversee the pot. He spearheaded the deal with Fremantle Group COO and Continental Europe CEO Andrea Scrosati, who has been the driving force behind the super-indie’s much-publicized investment splurge.

Being an independent producer was never easy. But these days, it’s near impossible. Even before the dual writers and actors strikes, changes in the international film and TV market had made life tough for the indies. Old models of art house moviemaking have been ravaged by a combination of decline in the specialty box office, the collapse of ancillary revenue for home entertainment and TV licensing, and the more recent pullback by streaming companies, who have begun to back fewer, and more mainstream, movies.
But one indie production company has gone from making just a handful of movies a year to dozens, finding a way to turn the turbulent new reality into a business model for making cutting-edge art house cinema that, shockingly, can actually turn a profit. It’s the company behind five of the most hotly anticipated titles at the Venice Film Festival this year: Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things,...

Angelina Jolie and Vivienne Jolie-Pitt are teaming up for an upcoming Broadway venture, Et has learned.
Angelina will serve as a lead producer for the musical The Outsiders, an adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 film.
Vivienne, the 15-year-old daughter of Angelina and Brad Pitt, will serve as her mom’s volunteer assistant and will be involved in the production.
“Viv reminds me of my mother [Marcheline Bertrand] in that she isn’t focused on being the center of attention but in being a support to other creatives,” Angelina says in a statement to Et. “She’s very thoughtful and serious about theatre and working hard to best understand how to contribute.”
This is an exciting time for the mother-daughter duo as a source tells Et that Angelina has been taking Vivienne to the theater “since she was a little girl, and Vivienne loves musical theater.

Angelina Jolie brought 21-year-old son Maddox Jolie-Pitt as her date to the White House state dinner in Washington DC on April 26. The pair arrived arm in arm to the soirée, which President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden hosted for South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. Jolie looked ethereal in a breezy white gown, matching blazer, and gold accessories, while Maddox looked sharp in a black suit and tie. The outing was a rare public appearance for Jolie and her eldest child, who studied at Yonsei University in Seoul and worked on the crew for Jolie's upcoming movie "Without Blood."
Several other notable stars were in attendance at the state dinner, including Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim and "Fixer Upper" duo Chip and Joanna Gaines. During the event, President Yoon surprised guests by singing one of his favorite songs, "American Pie," before Biden presented him with a guitar signed by Don McLean.

Italy’s Cinecittà studios have returned to profit one year ahead of the schedule set in its 2022 to 2026 industrial plan, aimed at returning the facility to its former glory as a major international filming hub.
It is the first time the complex’s results have been in the black since it was taken back under state control in 2017, after being run into the ground under private ownership for more than two decades.
Parent body Cinecittà S.p.A announced a $1.9 million (1.8 million euros) net profit for 2022, and a doubling of turnover to $42.3 million (39 million euros) against 2021, mainly on the back of a raft of bookings for the facilities.
The company said the complex had been booked to above 75% capacity in 2022, against 31% in 2021, a trend that has continued into 2023.
Detailing the $42 million turnover, Cinecittà S.p.A said $37.4 million (34.5 million euros) was related to the soundstages, venues, and set designs, with...

Exclusive: HBO’s hit comedy-drama series The White Lotus recently finished filming its second season at Italy’s Lumina Studios to the north of Rome.
As previously documented, the show filmed most of its second season in the San Domenico Palace Taormina and on location around Sicily in the south of Italy. The project then quietly filmed for one month in late summer at Lumina, which recently signed a six-year strategic pact with resurgent Italian studio Cinecittà.
Iconic facility Cinecittá is growing its capacity. Such has been the demand for studio space that it has needed to house some productions at satellite venues, including Lumina, which has four sound stages.
It’s a sign of the growing interest in Italy as a production destination that Lumina and Cinecittá were able to reel in one of the buzziest U.S. shows going. Season one, set at a dysfunctional resort in Hawaii,...

Angelina Jolie took her first stab at directing a feature film nearly two decades after starring in them. The revered actress wrote, produced, and directed the 2011 film "In the Land of Blood and Honey," a war-torn romance drama between a Serbian camp administrator and his Bosnian prisoner, against the backdrop of the Bosnian war of 1992. Here's a synopsis for the film:
Danijel, a soldier fighting for the Serbs, and Ajla, a Bosnian held captive in the camp he oversees, knew each other before the war, and could have found love with each other. But as the armed conflict takes hold of their lives, their relationship grows darker, their motives and connection to one another ambiguous, their allegiances uncertain.
Although the film opened to mixed reviews, Jolie was commended for her sensitive approach toward the story, and for being successful in depicting the atrocities of the war. The subject matter is extremely heavy,...

The ongoing overhaul of Rome’s Cinecittà Studios is getting traction thanks to booming demand from international productions just as the number of sound stages increase, prompting realistic prospects of turning a profit by end of 2022, which is a year earlier than planned.
Cinecittà has been undergoing a radical revamp devised by CEO Nicola Maccanico since June 2021, when European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and Italian premier Mario Draghi (pictured above at Cinecittà) jointly visited the iconic studio lot and held a press conference in its vast Studio 5 — known as the late, great filmmaker Federico Fellini’s second home — to announce a €300 million (300 million) investment to meet the growing international demand for studio space,
Maccanico, a former Warner Bros. and Sky Italia senior exec, said Cinecittà is now operating at full capacity and booked up through mid 2023. This is largely due having lured international productions such as Vatican thriller “Conclave,...

Rome’s Cinecittà studios are hitting unprecedented levels of occupancy, as the historic site continues to upgrade and expand its facilities under a five-year industrial plan, Cinecitta SpA CEO Nicola Maccanico said on Wednesday.
“Cinecittà has never been so full,” he told a presentation at the Venice Film Festival, looking at the early results of the industrial plan, which runs until 2026 and will see €260m worth of investment put into the facility.
Maccanico said Cinecittà’s 18 studios were currently fully-booked and that this trend would continue into the first half of 2023. He added that 70 of the productions booked in for 2023 were international in nature, and increasingly larger and more ambitious in scale.
He cited a dozen productions that had recently shot or were gearing up to shoot at the studios including Nanni Moretti’s Il Sol Dell Avvenire; Bill Holderman’s Book Club 2, starring Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen,...

The Italian film industry is in a paradoxical state: production is booming but box office is bust.
Italy’s five features vying for a Venice Golden Lion – plus a myriad more scattered in other Lido sections – reflect cinema Italiano’s current creative vibrancy, if you look at the cream of the crop; however, the average quality is not that great.
On the plus side, the country is making a quantum leap forward in terms of the global visibility of its movies just as the number of Italian directors considered bankable in Hollywood, such as Paolo Sorrentino, Luca Guadagnino and Stefano Sollima (“Without Remorse”), to name but a few, is growing.
During the fest’s lineup announcement Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera described the Italian cinema scene as being made of “light and shadows.” He noted that Italy’s movie output over the past year has reached a massive roughly 250 titles,...

It’s difficult to determine precisely what genre Angelina Jolie’s upcoming movie “Without Blood” is. Based on Italian novelist Alessandro Baricco’s novel of the same name, the film follows a young girl over decades as she grabbles with the complex realities of war, trauma, and violence in an unnamed 20th-century country. So, which genre is it? A war film? A modern fable? In Variety’s piece about the upcoming film, Jolie has an answer of her own.

When Angelina Jolie read Alessandro Baricco’s short novel “Without Blood” — the basis for her next directorial effort — the Italian fable about the brutality of war and healing in its aftermath had an immediate therapeutic effect.
“I read it right as I was going through the beginning of a very dark time in my life. I read it in the month that followed my divorce [from Brad Pitt in 2016],” recalls Jolie, who shot the adaptation at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios. “It had the effect on me that it’s had on so many people,” Jolie says, noting that the blurb on the cover says that the book is about the complexity of the human condition.
“I didn’t understand that when I first read it. I just knew the book had a profound effect on me,” she says. “I think it’s one of those pieces of art, of somebody’s intuition and mind,...

Since making her directorial debut with “In the Land of Blood and Honey” in 2011, Angelina Jolie has gradually built out her directing career. Alternating between big studio projects like “Unbroken” and smaller, more personal films, she has largely flown under the radar and earned praise for how seriously she takes filmmaking. While the actress frequently stars in big film franchises such as “Maleficent” and “Eternals,” Jolie continues to direct at a steady clip. Her next film, an adaptation of Alessandro Baricco’s novel “Without Blood” starring Salma Hayek Pinault, recently wrapped production.
In a new interview with Deadline, Hayek Pinault praised the experience of working with Jolie on the upcoming film. While she didn’t discuss the plot, she had nothing but good things to say about Jolie’s artistry. The two previously appeared together in Chloe Zhao’s “Eternals,” but this is their first time working together as an actor and director.

Angelina Jolie's newest movie involves two familiar faces behind the scenes: her sons Maddox and Pax! Jolie told People on Aug. 17 that when it came time to shoot her movie "Without Blood" in Italy, it was a no-brainer to include Maddox, 21, and Pax, 18, in the crew.
"We work well together. When a film crew is at its best, it feels like a big family, so it felt natural," she told the outlet. Maddox and Pax both worked in the movie's assistant director department. Pax previously worked with his mom on 2017's "First They Killed My Father" and shot stills for that movie. Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Melissa Barrera admits she had some major issues to overcome while shooting her new Netflix series, “Keep Breathing.” The “In the Heights” star plays an attorney who is the only survivor after her small plane crashes into a lake in the frigid wilderness. “Diving into that water was probably one of the scariest things,” Barrera tells me on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. “I have this real fear of drowning. So doing all of that was very therapeutic for me.”
Stunt coordinators gave her breathing exercises to do before diving in. “They would always tell me to take as many deep breaths as I needed until I felt ready,” Barrera recalls.
Like her character, Barrera is a city gal at heart: “I’m a person that enjoys having indoor plumbing and a shower and a toilet. And I don’t...
