Quotes

  • Elizabeth Streb : It requires us to designate the edge of our space, we agree that space isn't continuous, that it has limits, but rather than us, by the nature of how we move, limiting that idea, we get stomped by a hard surface so, in terms of that surface being upstage and at the end of the mat, it stops every move that we do in that direction, so we're constantly hurling our bodies in the direction of this flat surface and it stops our moves, and when it does stop our move there's an explosion of impact.

  • Elizabeth Streb : I realized that you should choose your heart's desire when you're planning the rest of your life. So I saw dance and thought that must be a combination of art and movement, my two favorite things.

  • Elizabeth Streb : The adjectives like violent and abusive and sadistic and masochistic came from the outside world believing that this was not a female form and me realizing that if I were a guy doing these wild moves that different adjectives would be used so I think the feminist movement allowed a freedom in my that I may or may not have had without the help of that time and I think that being gay and seeing the world from a different vantage point helped as much or more than the politicized feminist movement, it was more something that came to me because of how I see the world and the different things I was willing to do as a female in it.

  • Elizabeth Streb : Music is the true enemy of dance. The timing system for physicality hasn't been designated yet, we need to know the rules for movement in time for the body and that the way people talk in a sophisticated way about musical timing and about poetic timing even in literature, has not been devised yet for the human moving through space. So we attend to our timing law in such a way that we do the move in as much time as it takes your body to do the move, no more no less, at the skill range you're at right now and that's true and honest timing according to the Pop Action technique.
