It began as a parks teen progam to get kids off the street during summer. With the transfer of the program to Dark Wing Productions, it has developed into a full talent program that, in 2012, will include spanish only vocals and a standup comedy element with student production support making it a premiere teen program.
It was created in late 2006 by the Portland Parks & Recreation and the first year's auditions/winner was in 2007.
As of February of 2011, it is ran by Dark Wing Productions LLC ran by Director Dennis Gleason.
It was operated from inception - late 2006 to when it was transferred in February 2011.
In 2007: Jordan Thompson, 2008: Jeff Quigley, 2009: Gabriella Quintero and 2010: Jeyonna Barr.
The current director is Dennis Gleason. In 2006-2008 it was Meagan Hope and in 2009-2010 it was Madelyn Bach.
The first broadcast was in 2008. It includes the semi-final, finals and some of the tour performances. The TV part was produced by Dark Wing Productions that now owns the program.
In the past the time period has varied from late February to late April. In 2011 it was in late March and in 2012, is scheduled in January.
This varies as space is available. For 2012, there will be some auditions actually in the schools. Others will be at Portland Parks facilities and rented locations. School audition list is growing with Reynolds, Aloha & Gladstone HS all confirming with several others pending discussion.
Contestants must be attending a recognized school in grades 7 through 12, be 13 to 19 as of May 1st, 2012, live within 25 miles of Portland and agree to perform during the summer for at least 6 performances at miscellaneous venues.
