Quotes

  • Kisho Kurokawa : If I were a European Classical architect I too would have placed something in the center, but here intentionally, I have not done that because this lack of center is a characteristic of Japanese architecture.

  • Kisho Kurokawa : When I am asked to define my style I would probably say that it is a symbiotic style. What I mean is the simultaneous expression of conflicting things in a symbiotic manner, that's my style.

  • Kisho Kurokawa : In Japan, architects find the tea house very important, because it exemplifies all the aspects of Japanese aesthetic sensibility. European art and architecture pursue permanence and symmetry; whereas a Japanese tea house aspires to achieving absolute asymmetry. Moreover the materials used in tea houses, are almost always natural, such as bamboo, wood and paper. The traditional tea house designer is expected to actually go out and find his material in nature.

  • Kisho Kurokawa : The avoidance of perfection is a concept I often use. It is evident in this circular atrium where a section has been cut out in order to show where the bomb was dropped. So this cut represents a moment in history that Hiroshima will always remember. It emphasizes the fact the we will never forget what happened. And look at the pillar where I have used two kinds of granite; one ordinary granite and one that was exposed to the atomic bomb, which is evident from the discoloration. I employed this radiated granite in order to express that even the rock itself was witness to what happened in history.
