This year’s line-up boasts 22 World Premieres, 13 International Premieres, and 21 North American Premieres. Wellington, Nz. Perhaps it's the blustery winterish weather outside and the relative warmth and stillness inside the vast, canvas-covered tent/structure that give Sir Ian McKellen comfort. Maybe it's the lure of craft services dessert that give him cause to stay. Or maybe the venerable thespian is just in an introspective mood. Whatever the cause, as wind howls outside and various members of the "Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" crew scurry in and out of the door, accompanied by chilly gusts and intruding drizzle, McKellen holds court with a small group of reporters for nearly 45 minutes. Some of that time is spent on The State of Gandalf and the events that may or may not be on-tap for the third installment of Peter Jackson's second Tolkien-based trilogy, but far more of the interview is dedicated to deep reflection, delivered in the same authoritative and sonorous tone...

You have to be fairly self-confident to title your safety video "The Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made," but Air New Zealand isn't exaggerating. This "Hobbit"-themed video has everything, from flight attendants dressed up like elves to cameos by Elijah Wood, Peter Jackson, and Sylvester McCoy. Plus, Orcs! The Shire! Cool pipe music! If this is what air travel looks for Kiwis, sign us up.
New Zealand's tourism has enjoyed quite a boost from Peter Jackson's movies, and Jackson's own Weta Workshop has also contributed a great deal to the local economy. There's also a giant freaking Gollum sculpture at the Wellington International Airport in New Zealand, thanks to the wizards of Weta.
The video was directed by Taika Waititi, who wrote the original script for Disney's upcoming (and awesome-sounding!) film "Moana." He also wrote and directed the vampire comedy "What We Do in the Shadows," which stars...

Just one week (plus, as of this post, a few hours) until the premiere of part one of the Hobbit trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. There have been many teasers, trailers, and TV spots, but today we got a new featurette courtesy of a different outlet – Air New Zealand. Featuring the cast and Sir Peter Jackson, as well as, of course, the locations. It. Is. Gorgeous.

The release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is fast approaching, and with mid-December now very much on the horizon, Air New Zealand have partnered with Weta Workshop and director Peter Jackson himself to create a new Hobbit-inspired safety video.
‘Air New Zealand – The airline of Middle-earth.’ Has a nice ring to it.
“The Hobbit follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakensheild. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.
Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the...

Ever since I launched Sound On Sight back in 2008, I’ve seen an average of 150 new releases each year, and every year since, I’ve been able to easily draft up a list of my fifty favourite films. In fact, there were so many great movies released in 2011, I have a list of 75 I feel worth recommending. They say they don’t make movies like they used to and they don’t – they in some ways make it better. 2012 is already lining up to be a banner year and some of my favourite filmmakers are back, including Quentin Tarantino, The Coen Brothers, P.T. Anderson, Wong Kar Wai and even Steven Soderbergh.

All aboard! Hit Entertainment has hired Shane Acker to direct a live-action film based on the cartoon and toys of Thomas the Tank Engine. The film’s setting will be based in Sodor, an island of talking trains. Thomas will be the main character for the film. Acker’s last film was with the 2009’s animation film “9,” which starred Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly and Crispen Glover. It was also his directorial debut. The film cost $33 million and only grossed over $31 million domestically in 2009. Thomas the Tank Engine was based on The Railway Series books written by Reverend W. Awdry and his son, Christopher. It eventually evolved into a television series in 1984. The toy line is one of the best selling preschool toys in the United States and United Kingdom. “I’m a recent father, with a 20-month old daughter,” said Acker to Deadline. “We lead such busy lives in Hollywood,...
