A Laugh or Two (1928)
** 1/2 (out of 4)
There are a few more than just two laughs in this early Vitaphone short that features the vaudeville duo of Russ Brown and Jean Whitaker. Basically the two walk out on stage and Brown announces that he's never met this woman and just made a bet that no woman in the world could keep her mouth shut for five minutes. This is when Brown begins to insult her family while she grows more and more angry. For the most part this was a mildly funny short that had some funny moments scattered throughout. I thought Brown was funny at times but there's still no question that many of the jokes fall flat on their face. However, when he gets one right it's usually funny including one dealing with an animal that eats hay and can see equally from both sides. Another good joke deals with him insulting the woman's brothers and her father's dirty socks. The one thing missing from Brown is his ability to really act towards the camera. His performance doesn't come off quite as good as it should have but I will add that he has a nice singing voice that we hear at the end.
