A Deleted Scene not needed for the Movie, but Works on its Own
thale058 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Well, here's a review I'm not used to writing; this isn't a film review per se. After the success of Matt Reeves's The Batman, the fans got a special scene of the Joker played by Barry Keoghan. Everyone's favorite Clown Prince of Crime is being interrogated by Robert Pattinson's Batman and that's about it. It's a superfluous scene when taking into account whether it contributes to the plot or any character development or so forth so one can see how it was deleted (not that we already had a too long of a movie already which could've been cut at places).

By the time the narrative was over, the Riddler was conversing with a character most people naturally assumed was the Joker in prison. What struck me a bit odd was the casting of an actor not many people are familiar with; the Joker role is a dream job for many A-list talents and having Barry Keoghan be selected and reduced to a cameo was definite distraction to an otherwise solid Batman movie. I didn't dislike his performance in the deleted scene but it definitely seemed inspired by Heath Ledger's haunting and legendary portrayal of the Dark Knight's arch-nemesis. Overall, it was an unusual choice but he acted pretty decently for what little time he was given.

As for the look of the character, I suppose the filmmakers were making him a burn victim on account of the scars we see around his head but to me this Joker reminded me of a dog with mange. It's a unique, grotesque vision I respect which begs us to inquire about his backstory in this iteration. "You know how I got these scars?" It's kind of funny to also note he uses the phrase "ahead of the curve" like Ledger's version.

The most effective film technique used in the scene was where his face was out of focus for the majority of the runtime until the very end to enhance menacing, grim presence on screen for those watching.

Now as for the scene itself, like I said before, it's nothing crucial to the plot: it's simply a scene where Batman shows crime scene photos to the Joker who analyzes and gives him an opinion of the murders taking place. Seemed Hannibal Lecter was out to lunch that day in Arkham. The only interesting part of the scene is when the Joker implies our dark protagonist of our story is deep down glad these murders are happening, a nod to film noir themes.

To me, this seemed like a studio mandated part of the film for Matt Reeves: requesting they put in the Joker on screen. It feels out of place and it seemed all the better to be left on the cutting room floor for the final cut.

But you know what? I liked the scene for what it was and since it did not appear in the movie, no harm, no foul. It does give a good idea of Matt Reeves's serial killer direction he was going for but ultimately did little to advance anything. I'd say it holds its own.

My rating: 9/10.

It is a deleted scene for a reason
It works as a short film, but as part of The Batman, I am glad it got cut. Are we just gonna get a 5 minute scene in the middle of the film involving Batman's greatest villain without any buildup or backstory? Was it just gonna be a 5 minute scene and that is it.

I think it would had been very distracting, I am also not a big fan of the Joker in the end of the film too.

Anyways, it is a cool deleted scene, but it doesn't change the movie at all.

7/10.

We don't need yet ANOTHER Joker, but well-acted.
SPZMaxinema8 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I always like the intense exchanges that Batman always has with the Joker no matter what movie it's in. Robert Pattinson is really good as Batman and fits the role well. I suppose this Joker was portrayed alright, we just don't need yet another one showing up since we've already had two in the last 6 years. They should've made the reveal be Harvey Dent/Two Face. I would've liked that better, or in fact...how about a Batman villain we've never seen on screen before??

Constructed perfectly
miltsionis15 May 2022
This joker is probably the most balanced combination between comic accuracy and realism. We are talking about a joker that probably fell into the chemicals and that's why he is looking like that. We need a genius mind, freak, clown prince of crime, neither a supermodel nor a gangster nor a sophisticated guy like the previous versions. He is something new and promising by a very talented actor.

Nice little scene
Wortgefechte20 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is sooooo long. And they could have cut out so many other scenes. Why this one? The scene is deep. And it tells the audience one important thing about Ed that all the Batmans never understand: that Eddie loves Batman. Even if it is in his own crazy way. He loves him. He adores him. He loves to play with him. He is absolutely obsessed with him. Batman is his most precious toy and that's why he would never kill him. The jokers knows that and he told Bats in this scene. Love it.

Scary and different

Warning: Spoilers
The scariest Joker yet. With a face full of burns and mutilation. This scene just confirms the difference in this world then anything we've seen before. With Bales as the realism, Aflecks as the mythological legend, and now Pattinson as the detective.

High Expectations
robertfritsch24 April 2022
I think the reason people are quick to judge these movies when they come out is because they are expecting a performance compared to their own favorite versions of Batman or the Joker. As long as there is new storylines coming out, there is going to be a new take on all the characters. If you read the comics then you know there are different worlds and every character is different then the last one. I was skeptical about Patterson playing Batman. And while I'm not a fan of him being Bruce Wayne I understand his character is more human and as a young detective just starting out so it works! I think this is the first time they got the dark atmosphere right since the 1989 Batman movie! This is the way they all should have been shot!

Entertaining but understand why it was cut

Warning: Spoilers
This particular scene feels more studio mandated than the actual scene that involves the Joker (sorry Un-named Arkham Patient). Ignore the reviews that state he is just another Heath Ledger Ripoff or he wouldn't work in a film. This version is different and not in the obnoxious way that Jared Leto brought in Suicide Squad (2016) the Theatrical cut at least. Barry Keoghan's take while simple, was definitely a nice change of pace from the previous Jokers we've gotten in recent years. The design was both terrifying and grotesque, to put in simple terms this Joker is nasty, he has patches of hair popping out and missing fingernails. His look while will probably change, the movie made the smart move of keeping him obscured from view and if a design change happens then it can. The laugh is different, it feels more like a child like laughter rather than maniacal. I do like the implication that Batman already knows this character and that there's some sort of history even if it's minor. The Joker vaguely mentions it being a 1 year anniversary. I do hope that if he does appear in later movies that he has a role that's similar to what they were trying to do in here with the Hannibal Lector type of character. Rather than be a main villain for a while, I hate to admit it but the Batman films have been too Joker centric for a while and need a break. This would be a nice break with him only appearing cameos.

Now onto the cons... Joker telling Batman about the Riddler makes the reveal about the Riddler and Batman feel Redundant. I can see why this scene was cut and I do agree that it is necessary for the story to play out without repeating itself. I hope in the future that we do see more of this version of the Joker but hopefully not over doing it.

Give it a chance...
ejefferson-4209422 April 2022
Some people are upset with newer joker personas because they keep comparing any new Joker to past Joker performances. Ultimately, they have to let Jack Nicholson's & Heath Ledger's performances go & judge these newer joker's performances subjectively as their own entities...

Intriguing Joker!
gustavoojesus21 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I just had to create an account to respond:

It's surprising to see how a few reviewers fail to consider the many iterations of The Joker in the comic universe, cartoon and film.

And yet to compare this interpretation to the others would be akin to trying to find continuity in this Batman to the others: it's myopic and restrictive.

Everything about the film captured the darkest and most cynical elements of DC's best Batman (in my humble opinion.) And it isn't hindered by gadgetry, opulence or sensationalism.

So to the review of this Joker: terrific, belying a terrifying capacity. The performance is nuanced and keeps the character real as he would exist in our world. The cinematography and score enhances this scene to an eerie degree!

Does the sociopath or psychopath lack a capacity to reason? Does he lack intelligence? Is he formidable? In the scene, it culminates in affecting The Batman and I'm excited about this power and respect that each sees and holds in and for the other.

So, to the other reviewers lacking vision: Phoenix played the Joker from a mental illness perspective (and fantastic too.) Nicholson as the Clown Prince. Ledger as the maniacal mastermind. Keoghan as the keenly intuitive sociopath?!?! YES, please!

So come on now, only Nicholson carried a franchise and it was only for the novelty. I mean, please, it was directed by Tim Burton.

That wouldn't work today.... but this iteration, Koghan as THIS joker?! Absolutely thrilled!

Are you Kidding?
VanJanssen11 May 2022
Fine for a deleted scene, but they didn't need this in an already 3 hour film. The making friends at the end of the film was good enough. Now I personally love Delete scenes and thought this was a great little kid bit to see before seeing the actual film.

Not the Joker I want
jarrodvst4 May 2022
Definitely deleted for a reason it wouldn't fit in with the movie anywhere. I just feel like this isn't the joker I was hoping for. It doesn't strike the wow factor of "wow it's joker" for me.

The Batman is a masterpiece.
mdwmt23 May 2022
The Batman is everything I wanted. Thank you Matt Reeves, casts and creators! Matt Reeves is The GOAT. Wow I can't believe how perfect this film is! Cinematography is amazing. Score is amazing. Story is amazing. Only 5 minutes of Barry's Joker, but you can see so much potential.

One reason this scene was made/released

Warning: Spoilers
There are two notable paper clips on the file Batman gives Joker. When Joker gives back the file, one of those paper clips is missing. Joker of course escapes the insane asylum eventually; and now we know how.

Great scene, not needed in the movie
nicholasgambacorta171826 April 2022
This was a really great scene in my opinion, Barry Keoghan gives a really good performance as the Joker in just five minutes, and the chemistry between this Batman and Joker is definitely there. However, this would've felt out of place in the movie and took too much away from the story. I don't know where it would even fit, but yeah, I'm glad it's cut but also glad we got to see it!

The Perfect Batman and Joker we all needed!
oraymond-946441 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is a Joker and a Batman we have never seen before, Keoghan's is unique but yet the most comic accurate. This Joker has a completely different origin story to the past representations, which makes it complementary towards the new Batman!

Leaves you wanting to see so much more
jc-1561026 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This scene already made me so excited to see more of Barry Keoghan's Joker. I love that he already has an established relationship with Batman and Keoghan and Pattinson have great chemistry together. The Joker's "You think I get off on this stuff?", followed by Batman's "Don't you?", implied that the joker already did some pretty messed up stuff in year one to get apprehended by Batman and thrown in Arkham asylum and I'm looking forward to seeing them explore that even more in the future. I love how messed up the joker looks, the burnt face, scalp and fingernails make him look horrific. I can't wait to see him in action as the main antagonist in the future and the fact that he'll be teaming up with the riddler makes it all even more exciting and terrifying.

On par with the Riddler choice
slai_fi28 April 2022
I know this is only a 5 minute deleted scene, but I fell in love with Barry Keoghan as I watched. He seems like he'd be a great Joker just like Paul Dano was a great Riddler. I could tell (even tho it was blurry) by the facial expressions and movements that he really could pull it off. I waited and waited for the most important part of being joker and held my breath hoping he'd nail it...the laugh. The end came and we are shown his smile which was fantastic (great makeup) and then Barry laughed. I loved it. The cackling, steadiness, volume, pitch...just loved it all. I'd very much like to see him as joker more in the future.

So needed, but Also Not🤔
KFstudios20091 August 2023
I was very suprised when I watched this deleted scene. It was basically The Batman talking with The Joker, about stuff that I want spoil about. It was about what was happening in the film. Anyway, if I have to be honest, I understand why it was deleted. This movie was long from the beginning, and I feelt that this scene did not quite fit in the movie. From another side, we did only have Joker in one little scene, and it would be cool if we could have Joker just a little more. He is just such a great character anyway. We may get him some more in The Batman 2? We will see. The scene was not interesting about how it was made, only about what they are talking about. Joker played by Bary Keogahn was a new interesting detail that spiced up the new franchise. So overall it was ok but it was not necessary to have this scene included in The Batman.

Testing For Feedback
crnalagoona16 April 2022
It has to be the only reason why the studio thought it was a good idea to release this scene. The edgiest Joker put on the big screen.

Barry Keoghan looks like he wandered in from the set of The Walking Dead and just mumbled his lines. Now watch the Matt Reeves fanboys claim this is "the best Joker evurrr!!!".

Far below Phoenix, Nicholson and Ledger, heck, I would even put Leto above this Zombieker.

The joker as the director said have a different face more close to the man in the elephant man .Well The joker is pretty terrifying and have a different smile than the other movies . The way that we dont see him clearly until the end make us curious visually during all the movie scene . It have some nice event .i enjoyed it anyway .Dont know why they deleted the scene but they have their reasons .Nice short anyway.
