An aging bad ass, but a bad ass nonetheless...
paul_haakonsen5 June 2012
For a movie of this caliber, then "Bad Ass" wasn't actually too bad.

"Bad Ass" is about Vietnam veteran Frank Vega (played by Danny Trejo) who moves into his mother's house after she passes away. He is enjoying an overnight Internet stardom as his acts of beating up two skinheads on a bus was caught on phone camera. Frank's friend gets killed, and seeing the police doing nothing about it, Frank decides to take things into his own hands.

This movie sort of have elements from "Gran Torino" and also some of the old Charles Bronson movies. Sure, it is all stuff that has been seen before, but it actually did come together nicely enough in the movie and worked out great. And Danny Trejo proves that, despite up there in years, that he still can perform and do physical movies.

The story-wise was sort of funny, sure it was unrealistic, but still it proved to be entertaining enough. However, the part with the young neighbor falling in love with him, was a bit too much, and not really a necessary part for the movie in whole. The showdown between Danny Trejo and Charles S. Dutton (playing Panther) was actually fun to watch.

Just don't expect to be challenged by a complex storyline, because it just ain't there. And try not to pay too much attention to the shoddy dialogue, just watch the movie for what it is; an aging Danny Trejo out for revenge.

"Bad Ass" is a no-brainer type of movie, just put it on, sit down and disconnect your brain. This movie is fun to watch and is actually entertaining. However, I doubt that I will watch it a second time at any point, the movie just didn't have enough weight to support that, at least not for me.

Time for a real honest review for Bad Ass!
Thrill_KillZ13 April 2012
Alright I think all of us know that this for Danny Trejo's sake was not going to be anywhere near the caliber of Machete, that was funded in the millions & written very well. What we have here is a decent low budget VOD or netflix watch. The story is very simple, Trejo a man who served 7 years in the Vietnam war & upon arriving back to society he faced what every soldier faced upon returning home, a place to fit in. He struggled through the next 40 years running his hot dog stand & minding his own business. Then one day on a public bus he kicked the crap out of two punks harassing an old man & it was filmed by another bus rider & leaked onto the internet. It goes viral & he is proclaimed by the public as "Bad Ass". A title he wasn't looking for but he was happy to finally be fitting in with society.

After his one & only friend was murdered senselessly he became the man the public wanted him to be & started on journey of ass kicking his way to find answers. This film won't win any awards but it was certainly entertaining for 90 minutes, and all you punks giving it a 1 rating should go sky diving without a parachute because obviously your brainless body is just in the way. It's 5/10 solidly, actually it's worth more than that for the great message it leaves the viewer. So to belittle this fine piece of film is in itself a crime!

I couldn't help thinking of Gran Torino & Harry Brown a bit at times due to the fact of all three characters being in a war, all being senior citizens & all they wanted was a little peace & a bit of happiness and they were "called" back into duty for something they truly believed in.

Trejo makes the film
movieman_kev8 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Now I could get my panties all in a bunch about how certain characters have switched races from their real life counterparts, but the truth is I just don't care. It's Hollywood those things happen all the time. The much more surprising thing is that Craig Moss actually made a film that wasn't complete and utter ass (those unfortunate enough to have seen his two previous films can surely attest to his crimes against celluloid)

Danny Trejo is entertaining as EBM in this mexiploitation film, and I enjoyed it for what it was. Not going to win any awards any time soon, but as a vigilante film, I've seen worse. However I did take major issue over reusing a certain scene almost completely from a (much better) film

"Yeah, Charles Bronson, I Get It…"

..So says a police officer that is on Frank Vega's (Danny Trejo) side. The film is a by the book revenger. There are probably a thousand and one films like "Bad Ass." But Danny's the star, and that makes all the difference. Also, he's a nice guy in this one and doesn't start beating people up until the bad guys force him to beat them up. Lots of action, some blood, and a whole lot of butt kicking. If you're a fan of revenge films, it is recommended.

For a film that was "based off true events" Hollywood couldn't do more to demonize the actual participants.

"Bad Ass" is based off of an altercation on a bus where Thomas Bruso, a European American, was attacked by an African American. You can watch the video at http://epicbeardman.net/ Once Hollywood got a hold of this, the good guy became Hispanic, and the bad guy became a duo of neo-Nazis, because it would be too politically incorrect to have otherwise.

Bad Ass serves as your standard "good guy down on his luck" feel good film. Good guy sees bad guy, good guy punches bad guy, good guy wins.

Oh, and another thing, the first reviewer who gave the film 10 stars wrote the review a month before the movie came out.

Warning: Spoilers
First off, the trailers for this film are *extremely* misleading - BadAss is way more serious of a film then you're led to believe; this is not a Tarantino-inspired slaughterfest in the spirit of Hobo With Shotgun or Sucker Punch, and although it revolves on Danny Treyo's "BadAss-ness", there is a lot of content beyond fistfights and generic violence.

Danny Treyo(Frank Vega, "Bad Ass")is a ex-Vietnam vet living a quiet and slightly unhappy life in the suburbs; there is an incident of him beating up some skinheads and becoming a YouTube sensation(thereby acquiring the BadAss moniker), but it's a minor plot device and not as central as they make it out to be.

The main plot revolves around the murder of one of BadAss's friends, the police's incompetence, a corrupt major, and BadAss's stone-fisted investigation; if anything, this film has more in common with Marlowe's film noire dramas than with Death Wish - you will be pleasantly surprised at the amount of content this film has.

Now, let's run through the good and bad.

Good everything. Direction, acting, great supporting characters, many, many scenes that are so real you can smell the sweat. Real writing, great pace, and zero unrealistic plot twists.

Bad: almost nothing. BadAss is a low-flying film, it's not trying too hard and sticks to a well-rehearsed script, but does everything properly. Production isn't up there with the best, but i guess when you wish for Hollywood polish, you also get a lot of Hollywood crap along with it. So all good here.

Now, it's hard to vote this film properly. For some, it will be a nine. For some others a five. What i see in it is a lesson on how to write a film without falling into the commercial pits of easy amusement. This film has a lot going for it; if you can handle it, if you don't have prejudices against this kind of film you should see it because it's great. If you are into more sensational films, like MI3, then give it a miss because you wouldn't understand a minute of it.

A great little film that has many lessons to teach.

My final vote - a politically correct 7/10

Not Bad But Not That Good
LeonLouisRicci27 March 2013
This is a low-budget entry in a sub-genre. The Geriatric, OG, Geezer, violent Vigilante Movie. With the aging Baby Boomers we are likely to see quite a few more. It has always been cathartic to see Superheroes and maybe regular Folks standing up to oppression and intimidation. From Robin Hood to Batman to Paul Kersey to Harry Brown, we get satisfaction from their noble efforts.

In this one Danny Trejo gets to show some good acting chops as an against type, soft spoken, good hearted Bad Ass. He is quite good here with more range than usual and demonstrates why he has so many devoted fans.

The Film itself is not very well constructed and has some barely needed and sometimes embarrassing subplots, like the fetching Female neighbor with the cute and wise-cracking Son. But the action is acceptable and quite violent at times.

Not a bad Movie but does not quite rise to the level of a Cult Movie with staying power or a gritty real-life Noir. It really does not know what it wants to be and for that matter and that lack of direction the Film fails to be better than a standard B-Movie.

Better than I thought

Warning: Spoilers
Lots of action as was to be expected with the star and the title. It is nice to see Trejo getting some relatively good guy roles after all the (no pun intended) bad ass roles he played plus the really bad life he turned around. In this movie it is a good thing he is playing his age because he is starting to move like I do, an older man. Poor old Charles S. Dutton has not had a good guy role since "Roc", except for the Die Hard movie. Everything I have seen him in since he is a rotten cop, gang banger, or drug pusher. This movie is really just a platform for Trejo to make bank on after "Machete" and the sequel but it is entertaining. I really like the revenge factor of this movie when the best friend is murdered and that starts everything moving. They never say or I missed it, where the he got the flash drive but it is the catalyst for the rest of the movie. I like how they let the old guy still be forceful and powerful enough to beat up the bad guys. The one really interesting thing about the whole movie was Trejo never used a gun. This is a really decent B movie.

Its so bad its good!
mrsOGB24 October 2012
First of all my husband I only watched this movie because we both love Danny Trejo. The previews made this movie look pretty good. It started out pretty good, but then it just became so bad we were laughing the entire movie. Even good actors can't save cheesy lines. The whole time we just kept saying that Trejo is in his sixties!! Unbelievable. That man is the epitome of the Hollywood dream. From criminal to D movies to great character actor and then starring roles. Awesome! This movie is great to watch Mystery Science 3000 style. We like to try and catch movie mistakes and look up actors while watching every movie. Its fun and funny. Don't try to make it more than that and you will enjoy it.

One Good Action Movie
ghasl114 April 2012
At first when I saw the trailer and the movie poster I thought to myself 'oh its another one of those B-Grade movies' lately I haven't seen a lot of B-Grade movies that were up to standards. But after watching this WOW. If you lived or seen the era of bad ass movies such as Patrick Swayze, Kurt Russell, Chuck Norris etc in the early 80's this brings back memories of how macho movies were without the need of cg graphics for explosions, excessive slow motion cutscenes or without the need of bodybuilders. This is a feel-good movie of what it is to be a man, a character that doesn't have to rely on how he looks but on his personality and how he gets by, such as helping others and being self reliant.

Danny Trejo has done a superb job of his character with his persona and his acting. Throughout the whole movie your not sure if his a vigilante, neighbourhood watch or a hero in everyday clothes. The action is protagonists against a hero who has previous combat experience as a Vietnam veteran. There is one flinching moment but its OK because afterwards the hero jokes about it in a black humour way.

At times there were funny moments but not cliché moments of catch phrases that you would see in action romp movies. The script is fairly basic but if you expect it be really sophisticated then you chose the wrong genre (no thriller or mystery elements). I would consider it better than Machete and recommend if you just want to watch it as a popcorn action flick and have a few laughs.

Please Stay Away
FilmPulse8 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
When a trailer for Bad Ass hit the web last year, many questioned whether or not it was a hoax – one loosely based on a real altercation between a 67-year-old white man and a 50-year-old black man on an Oakland public bus. The fight was videoed and went viral after being posted to YouTube in February 2010 ("Old Man Beats Up Young Black Guy on Metro Bus"). The film changes the principals' races and adds characters possibly for the sake of political correctness. The hero is now a Hispanic man who comes to the aid of an African-American man verbally accosted by two white guys of the skinhead variety. Sadly, this film should have been a hoax because there is nothing worth watching here.

Danny Trejo of Machete fame plays Frank Vega, a senior citizen who becomes known as "Bad Ass" after he beat up two skinheads on a public bus and makes the news and YouTube. We see from flashbacks that he served in Vietnam, that his girlfriend got married and had kids while he was oversees, and that he has spent the last 40 years or so serving hotdogs at a corner stand. After his mother dies, he moves into her house next door to a couple and their young son; the wife is abused by the husband and Vega comes to her aide. Note: If the film had a plot, this would be its subplot. Vega's best friend, Klondike, gives him a flash drive for safe keeping. Then, Klondike is killed by two thugs who are looking for said drive. Vega aims to avenge his best friend's death and goes on a vigilante spree of sorts.

We find out the flash drive has compromising material on the major (played by Ron Perlman). The major's underhanded right-hand man is played by Charles Dutton who we know serves the major in an unofficial capacity as his personal enforcer. Panther (Dutton) is a more than a few cards short of a full deck. The last big duel sequence between Vega and Panther involve them both driving buses at one another in a wild game of public transit chicken. Ultimately, Vega prevails with beating Panther's ass on the side of the street and the major gets arrested for unnamed corruption.

Director Craig Moss has previously made spoofs – one of Apatow-like films and one of the Twilight films. Is Bad Ass a spoof? Is it a revenge exploitation film? At times, it seems to simultaneously be both. It would certainly be easier to critique it if it clearly fell into one camp or the other. Instead, it is just an incredulous piece of nonsensical film-making. It is a shame, because maybe there really is a story to be told about an altercation on a public bus and the men involved. By all means, someone feel free to tell that story and bypass this ridiculous film in the process.

Danny Trejo's Grand Torino
siderite25 April 2012
I don't really care where the idea came from, this film was a lot of laughs. Imagine Danny Trejo doing his old and tough routine, but doing it with humour and a physicality that few could achieve aged 68. And it wasn't just him. Ron Perlman did a bait and switch again, appearing only a few scenes into the movie, instead the role of the villain being taken by Charles S. Dutton, who also appears only a few times, but it is obvious he is having just as much fun as Trejo did. Add in a little bit of Harrison Page and you have your geriatric A-team in a film that felt pretty close to real. Even Richard Riehle did a small appearance.

Of course, it wasn't all fun and games. The hero of the city for beating up a few guys, maiming and killing a few others, that wasn't realistic or cool, really. The explosions and gun shot effects were shoddy and low budget, but let's face it, the movie wasn't about special effects. And the girlfriend stuff... let's say it was completely unnecessary and threw me off a little.

But bottom line, this is a low budget, yet very fun film, without being a true comedy. It is full of good humour and references to other films of the genre, like Death Wish. I liked it a lot.

Film to reflect the state of play we want.
kenhart19695 September 2012
First off I am a fan of Mr Trejo, his niche film roles cast him as a "baddie" however this film I thought was refreshing. Finally a person who stands up for the good of people in a realistic manner. So I am a little biased - that said I gave it 7 from 10.

Yes scripts like this a common place and often over acted and over done from the moment they start to the moment they stop (looks at a couple of Wrestlers trying to make it in the film business.)

The thing that I liked about this film, unlike other films of this nature, you can see a person actually doing this and Mr Trejo performed the role as if he were that person. He certainly is Not an actor getting paid to have a glass eyed soulless character, who never runs out of ammo in his gun and has bullet proof skin to boot.

Now, before you go off half-cocked and say what about (insert you film name here) just watch the film. Sit back and watch it again if you need to, the way he waits for public transport, the way he walks into situations, they way he acts.

Some minor bits that are there for the film effects, but other than that a good film that kept me amused. There is humour and it amusing, it doesn't require swearing to get a smile either. As for the action and fighting, pretty much perfectly choreographed, but then he does know how to box very well. I'm not going to say what happens or who does what, just take the film for what it is and enjoy it, I certainly did and yes I would gladly watch it again.

All that is wrong with Hollywood. Warning: Spoilers
Wow, is this terrible. Many others have pointed out the numerous inaccuracies of the plot, but even as a movie it's boring and lifeless. The main song used throughout the movie just repeats "I'm badass." Danny Trejo is a likable guy, but there's no reason he needs to have a love interest. This is another film which (I think) doesn't pass the Bechdel test, and I'm not surprised at all. He would definitely not be awarded a position of honor after going on a violent bus chase through the city. That's easily $3 million in damages, and somebody's gotta pay for it. Aside from that, I honestly grew tired of watching him assault anyone who got in his way. This movie was 5% 'inspired by true events' and 95% standard Hollywood bull-ish. Protip: when you run out of movie ideas, stop making movies.

Warning: Spoilers
OK here is what i don't like about this movie, it takes a great you tube video where black men were being racist and picking on old people of every color on a bus.they change is for some odd reason to white (skin heads) being racist on a bus why the heck do the white guys gotta be the racists in every movie? cant you make a true movie and show how the black men on the bus were calling him cracker? i thinks its very insulting you try to push these stereo types that whites are so racist when clearly in the real you tube video no white person was being racist at all! you took a real moment and ruined it in my opinion and the real situation that happened should have been left to the way it was.not changed to suit the black racists to make whites look bad yet again.

Machete does Death Wish....
FlashCallahan17 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Decorated Vietnam hero Frank Vega returns home only to get shunned by society leaving him without a job or his high school sweetheart.

It's not until forty years later when an incident on a commuter bus (where he protects an elderly black man from a pair of skin heads) makes him a local hero where he's suddenly celebrated once again.

But his good fortune suddenly turns for the worse when his best friend Klondike is murdered and the police aren't doing anything about it....

Take and epic you tube video filmed by people who were against the man in question, and add a little plot, and a bit of Red Heat and you have this.

It's a B-movie of the highest order, something that Charles Bronson would have made in the late eighties, so it needs to be seen with a large pinch of salt.

It's fun though while it lasts, the one liners come thick and fast, and Trejo as you would expect is very good in the title role and gives a great performance.

The rest of the cast are just pure filler and people like Perlman, and Dutton, didn't really have to be in this movie, as they don't really add anything to the proceedings.

If you like late eighties action movies, then this is for you...

Of course Hollywood would take this incident and twist the facts to demonize white people
assface12345432126 July 2013
It's pretty sad that Hollywood and the government (which pretty much owns Hollywood) would take an incident like this and reverse all the races just to make whites look bad, because that's the politically correct thing to do. It makes me sick, and I'm getting really sick of this demonization of whites. What is even sadder is how they basically defecate all over Vietnam Tom by twisting the fact to fit their political agenda of creating hatred for whites. Where is the outrage? Besides all of that, I thought the movie was poorly acted, and was never meant to be a real movie, and rather just an excuse to demonize white people. It's extremely racist... but I guess since I'm white, I have no right to complain in the eyes of all the racist blacks (because there are FAR more racist blacks out there than racist whites), and this movie is just a slap in the face to all whites and to Tom. It's sickening that they would do this disgusting low down politically motivated Hollywood white-hating tactic just to placate all the racist blacks, and it's even sadder that there are so many spineless whites out there that won't call this movie out for what it is: an anti-white propaganda film sponsored by government owned Hollywood for political purposes (getting the nation to think of all whites as racists, when the opposite is true. Is this a long enough review for you, IMDb?

Danny Trejo kicks it bad ass style.
craignorm14 June 2012
I ain't gonna say this film is brilliant because it's not. Some of the acting is poor. The story is a tad weak and it has been done before but better in many cases! Having said that, I really enjoyed the film. It's a bit cheap and tacky but that kind of adds to the films strong points. Danny Trejo plays a retired ex vet who basically kicks some ass for a just cause. That's the story. I found it highly entertaining and I thought Trejo's performance was lovable and sweet whilst being hard and mean. Some people will love this film, some will be indifferent and some will hate it. In my opinion it is definitely worth a watch because, despite it's predictability it's a great feel good flick and you get to see Trejo kick a lot of ass. Enjoy!

A fun B movie for those who like this sort of thing
Wizard-87 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
If you are familiar with B movie actor Danny Trejo, you'll know that any movie where he makes an appearance automatically gets some points in its favor. In "Bad Ass", Danny Trejo is front and center in a rare leading role, so we get ninety or so minutes of his awesomeness. No surprise that Trejo is great in this movie. Naturally, he is great in his scenes of kicking ass, but he also gets to show in several sequences emotions like tenderness and humor, and does those things also very well. There isn't much of a plot here, I'll admit - much of the movie is Trejo just going from one location to another and picking up a clue in each location. But the movie manages to deliver a lot of action along the way, making the journey a lot of fun. The only real objection I have is the way they movie uses Ron Perlman - despite his billing, I don't think his scenes add up to more than a minute of the movie's running time.

Hateful, racist, movie that should not have been made.
kmurijpj30 May 2012
Personally I followed the original news story, where an elderly white man was racially assaulted by a black man. Incidentally the black man received aid by two other black females who verbally assaulted the white man and stole his bags and the content of the bag. I followed the story I supported the man and I therefor find it very hurtful that a group of people, producers, writers, directors etc. Would completely rewrite the story to fit their political agenda. What their agenda is I am not entirely sure of, but the result will definitely bring more black on white hate crimes. The movie itself is as pathetic as it gets, it seems as if it's rushed all the way through. The acting is way off using washed up actors/actresses like Ron Perlman and Danny Trejo to name a few. Some movies are just not worth wasting your time on and this is one of them.

Worth a look... but you must be a B movie fan.
DjfunkmasterG16 June 2012
So... I just watched Danny Trejo's Bad Ass, which is based on the the Epic Beard Man events.

It is a somewhat entertaining film, definitely clichéd and riddled with one liners that are so bad you have to laugh at them, think Batman and Robin with Arnold as Mr. Freeze using his goofy one liners, then take scenarios like a bus running over parking meters and Trejo's Frank Vega saying, "Sorry I don't have any change." I am not trying to say that these eye rolling moments don't make the film hard to watch, in fact given their context they work to an extent.

The film is of course based on Thomas Brusco, the senior citizen who beat up a bus patron and became a You Tube sensation about 2 years ago. Here the filmmakers twist the yarn and give Epic Beard Man, a somewhat touching, if not mushy back story of being lost in today's world. They do try to keep the action moving even to the point that they inter-cut footage from the Arnold Schwarzenegger film RED HEAT to help provide the films climax.

People will try and compare this film to Machete, and in a way I can see where they might get the inclination to make such a comparison, but believe me they are not int he same class.

The primary cast are senior citizens, and if you want to watch a bunch of seniors kicking ass and taking names, this is definitely worth a look. If you decide to walk into the film, keep a VERY open mind. It is a B movie from start to finish.

The best way to describe it is a Die Hard for seniors, but I may be giving it too much credit in saying that but overall, if you're looking for a way to kill 90 minutes on a Sunday afternoon (Or in my case, a Saturday morning) then give it a whirl.

Such a shame it was a terrible film
police666-330-3724813 April 2012
With the good actors in this film, and general plot i was expecting a good film, sadly, i was very disappointed. The story was weak, the fight scenes were a joke, the acting was abysmal and all round it was a very poor movie. If i had gone the theater to see this i would have demanded my money back after walking out. The best parts of the film were the conversations Danny has with the young neighbor boy, who reminded me of Rollo from the Cleavland brown show. Maybe the director was going for "a hobo with a shotgun" type film, either way it didn't work.

I'm a big fan of Danny and Ron, but after watching this am not so sure.

In short a terrible film and embarrassing for the actors.

Great fun and not to be taken seriously
thomas-hogarth10 June 2012
I really enjoyed this film, it was almost a caricature of an action movie. Done with a brilliant subtle sense of humor.

He goes from zero to hero, gets the girl, investigates crime scenes (including cheese chalk out line) and kicks some serious ass, in a way that we all wish we could but is of course impossible. It's almost comic book style.

Funny quote (for the geeks) 'What the f**** is a flash drive'

'It's an inch long storage device that uses solid state memory to store persistent data from your computer."

Anyhow watch it with a grin on your face and point out the silly bits to your mates.

A case of so bad that it's good
idonotknowwhattotypehere1 February 2022
Movies can be bad, they can be frustratingly bad, and they can be downright trash. But then there are some movies that are bad in a way that somehow works making them entertaining, and this movie is certainly one of them. Several times throughout the movie i kept saying how bad it was, but while i said it i was laughing at the same time, it's the kinda movie where you shake your head with a smile on your face. It's very far off from being any kind of a masterpiece, and i'll have forgotten all about it by next week, but at the same time i found the entertainment value high, and at absolutely no point was I close to giving up on it. Far exceeded my expectations of a movie rated 5.5.

Good music theme
ee0123913 April 2012
Oh I got so disappointed with this movie... It did really started well it was a clever speech that was opening for a great story. But then it was like they changed director, everything suddenly gets predictable and boring and you are already seeing the ending in middle way.

Well nevertheless the acting is not bad at all (except for some lame parts) and there are some cool fight scenes and some other a bit disordered action shoots. I liked the soundtrack, very nice hip hop themes, and I liked how the main character followed the clues.

It's a movie that could had evolved on something much more thrilling but if you just want to relax with nothing too complex to mess around with your head it's a nice movie. I mean you can even watch it with kids, not a big problem, but for me it's definitely not what I look forward in a movie.
