- Three months after the serial killer attacked her, Janet Scott returns to work. She is welcomed with open arms by her colleagues and is soon on the job, interviewing a young witness who is afraid of retaliation should he make a statement to the police. DCI Gill Murray would like her to speak to serial killer Geoff Hastings to see if he'll reveal the identities of some of his other victims. When Janet says she's an idiot for getting back with Nick Savage and that he's only being nice to her so she doesn't report him over an indiscretion with a juror, Rachel has it out with. The next day there is a hit and run accident and Rachel realizes Nick's mobster client may have been trying to kill her. It's actually simpler than that.—garykmcd
- Janet returns to work after 3 months off after Geoff Hastings attacked her, to a welcome party organised by Rachel. She is asked by Gill to interview a potential witness to a teenage murder, and manages to find out what happens. Rachel tells her that she is dating Nick Savage again, and Janet tells Rachel she's mad for doing that, and that he's just using her. After an attempt on Rachel's life, Janet tells Gill everything about Savage, and he is detained. Investigating this, Gill finds out that Rachel PNCed Savage's car 8 months before (ep1) unwarranted - a discipline offence, and tells her she will never work in MIT again after she reports her to Professional Standards. However, when Janet finds out, she goes to Gill and says she was in the car with Rachel when she did it, and that she would have to report her too. Janet and Gill have been friends for almost 20 years so Gill does not report either of them, but instead threatens she will kill them "and get away with it because [she] know[s] how to" if they let her down. DS Andy Roper also announces he is leaving, and he tells Janet it's because of her - he can't be around her if she's still married. Janet is offered his job as a DS and also asked to interview Geoff Hastings - but refuses. After Gill does not report them, however, she agrees to help interview him.
