- Eleven teams of two people travel from Melbourne, Victoria to Lombok, Indonesia. Some people have to battle both the wind and a fear of heights at the Road Block.
- Helecopters fly eleven teams who come from all over Australia to the starting point at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the heart of Melbourne's sports precinct. The teams are Anne-Marie & Tracy, friends and work colleagues from a Big W store in Perth, Western Australia, Richard & Joey, married entrepeneurs from Sydney, New South Wales, Tyler & Nathan, backpacking and surfing friends from the Gold Coast, Queensland, Dave & Kelly, married bikers from Geraldton, Western Australia, Matt & Tom, farmers from near Birdsville, Queensland and a cattle station on the border of Western Australia and Northern Territory, Alana & Mel, recently re-united sisters from Adelaide, South Australia, Sam & Renae, models from Perth, Western Australia, Mo & Mos, friends from Melbourne, Victoria, Jeff & Luke, father and son from the Gold Coast, Queensland, Ryot & Liberty, brother and sister from New South Wales, and Anastasia & Chris, dating couple from Sydney, New South Wales.
The helicopters touch down in the middle of the field, where the teams meet host Grant Bowler, who tells them a few things about the race. It is divided into twelve legs, with a Pit Stop at the end of each leg. Eight of the Pit Stops are elimination points, where the last team to check in will be eliminated from the race. The first team to check in at the first Pit Stop will receive an Express Pass, which they can use to skip any task of their choice. Grant also reminds the teams to read their clues carefully, and tells them that the first team to cross the finish line will win a prize of A$250,000.
In another part of the field, there are eleven clue boxes where the teams will find their first clue. Grant says to the teams, "The world awaits. Race hard, race safe... GO!", and the teams sprint toward the clue boxes. When they open up the clues, they find that they have reached a Road Block, a task that only one person from each team can perform, and in additiion, no person can perform more than 6 Road Blocks on the entire race. In this Road Block, one person from each team has to climb one of the MCG's six 75 metre light tower masts to retrieve their clue, and then abseil down the tower to rejoin their partner.
Tyler, Ryot and Dave are the first three people to complete the task, and when they rejoin their partners, they open up the clue and discover that they have to fly to Denpasar, Indonesia and sign up for one of three fastboats that will take them to Lombok. The boats will depart at 30 minute intervals. As the other teams abseil down the towers, Tyler & Nathan get the first of two Jetstar flights out of Melbourne, which travels to Denpasar via Darwin and is scheduled to arrive at 8:30pm. Work colleagues Anne-Marie & Tracy get lost at the airport, ending up at a carpark/garage where they manage to get A$3 from other drivers in order to pay for their ticket before finding the right lot with marked slots. Despite the mishap, they join the other nine teams on the second flight, direct from Melbourne to Denpasar.
Surfers Tyler & Nathan arrive in Denpasar at 9:15pm and head to the BlueWater Express office to sign up for the first of three fastboats, which will depart at 6:00am the following morning. The second flight arrives at 10:55pm and the ten teams on it get into a mad scramble for places on the boats. Eventually, Anastasia & Chris and Alana & Mel join Tyler & Nathan on the first boat, Sam & Renae, Dave & Kelly, Jeff & Luke and Anne-Marie & Tracy are on the second boat leaving at 6:30am, and Richard & Joey, Mo & Mos, Matt & Tom and Ryot & Liberty are on the 7:00am boat.
The following morning, the first fastboat leaves at 6:00am. On Lombok, the teams have to search through the nets on fishing boats in a fisherman's village to find their next clue, but after the boat arrives in Lombok at 8:27am, Tyler & Nathan, Anastasia & Chris and Alana & Mel head into the village looking for the clue, and they are still looking there when the two boats with the other teams arrive. With all eleven teams searching for the clue, Tyler & Nathan are the first to return to the boats near where the fastboat arrived, and they find a clue that tells them to travel by taxi to the Pura Lingsa Temple, where they will have to participate in "Perang Topat", where they run through a rice cake war ceremony before they can receive their next clue. As Tyler & Nathan head off to catch their taxi, the word eventually gets around the other teams about the location of the boats with the clue, with some teams helping others in their search.
Tyler & Nathan get pelted with rice powder by the locals before they arrive at the leg's Detour, a choice between two tasks that each have different pros and cons. At this Detour, teams have to choose between Cash or Carry. Teams that choose Cash have to travel to Mandalika Market, where they must make and sell 15 bowls of a local delicacy known as Bakso from a mobile stall for no less than 5,000 rupiah per bowl. Once all the bowls have been sold, the teams hand the money over to the stall owner in exchange for their next clue. Teams that choose Carry have to travel to a marked stall at Mandalika Market, where they pick up a basket of local produce that they have to deliver by carrying it on their heads. When they deliver their baskets to another stall without dropping them, they will receive their next clue.
Tyler & Nathan choose Carry, but have trouble trying to balance the baskets on their heads. Models Sam & Renae pass them and are the first to receive a clue telling them to make their way to Malimbu Beach, where they must travel on a traditional boat to the island of Gili Trawangan, where they don snorkelling gear in order for one of them to retrieve a briefcase from the bottom of Halik Reef, before having to count the loose Indonesian rupiah bills inside their briefcase. Once the teams arrive at the correct amount, they will receive their next clue. As a further challenge, each of the eleven briefcases contains a different amount of money. Richard & Joey are the first team to choose Cash, but they inadvertently sell their bowls of Bakso for only 1,000 rupiah. Tyler & Nathan decide to switch tasks and do Cash, and they become the first team to complete this task.
Eventually, all of the teams complete the Detour, with Mo & Mos, Ryot & Liberty Anne-Marie & Tracy and Richard & Joey all completing the Cash side behind Tyler & Nathan, while Matt & Tom, Dave & Kelly, Alana & Mel, Anastasia & Chris and Jeff & Luke complete the Carry task behind Sam & Renae, with Dave & Kelly switching after having trouble with making the Bakso.
Although Anne-Marie & Tracy need a couple of attempts to pick up their briefcase, they join the other ten teams in huts near the beach where the teams have to count the money in their briefcase. The first teams to finish counting get their amounts wrong, forcing them to return to their hut and count it again. Farmers Matt & Tom aren't helped when they drop one of their notes into the sand outside their hut, a predicament of which they are oblivious until Dave points it out to them.
Sam & Renae are the first team to arrive at their correct amount, and they receive a clue that tells them to travel by cidomo, a local form of horse-driven transport, to the Pit Stop located at Sunset Point. The other ten teams are still counting when Sam & Renae arrive at the mat as the first team to check in to a Pit Stop on The Amazing Race Australia. Grant Bowler meets them on the mat and tells them that as the winners of this leg of the race, they have each won a A$10,000 National Australia Bank Classic Banking account that they will be able to use after the race. He also hands them the Express Pass.
Dave & Kelly and Ryot & Liberty are the second and third teams to check in at the Pit Stop. Jeff & Luke, Matt & Tom and Tyler & Nathan complete the task within minutes of each other and are 4th, 5th and 6th. Anastasia & Chris are the next team to check in. Anne-Marine & Tracy are more then relieved when they get their amount right and arrive eighth, ahead of Alana & Mel and Richard & Joey. When Mo & Mos arrive at the Pit Stop as the last team, Grant tells them that this is one of the pre-determined non-elimination legs, which means that they are still in the race, but they are marked for elimination, meaning that they will incur a 30 minute penalty when they check in at the next Pit Stop, with the only way they can avoid the penalty being if they are the first team to arrive there.
