Dan Lin has found his right hand man.
Former Sony head turned producer Doug Belgrad is joining Netflix as vice president of film.
“We are thrilled to welcome Doug to our film team as Vice President of Film,” said Lin in a statement. “He brings a wealth of experience to the role from his many years as a respected studio executive, producer and co-financier. We will be leaning on Doug’s great creative instincts, his eye for talent, and his deep relationships across the filmmaking and talent community. We can’t wait for him to get started and look forward to his many contributions as we pursue our mission to make best-in-class films across every genre.”

“Do you like your job?”
That’s how my interview with Jason Segel begins — him beating me to the punch, asking the first question. It perfectly sets the tone. Because like me, he likes his job a lot.
“I don’t like the parts of my job that require permission. That’s why I started writing. No one can tell you no, no one can say you can’t,” says Segel. “The best piece of advice I got was to try to remove as many of the systems of permission along the way as you can.”
Segel has worked hard to get to this point. Currently, he’s promoting Apple TV+’s “Shrinking,” a dark comedy he leads and co-created with Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein. There’s freedom in working on a project as a co-creator, but that wasn’t always the case.

Jason Segel is opening up about his time spent on “How I Met Your Mother”, revealing that he was “really unhappy” with his life and career during the final years of the show. The 43-year-old actor, and current star of the Apple TV+ series “Shrinking”, reflected on the hit CBS sitcom during a roundtable interview for The Hollywood Reporter.
“There was a period in my life and career around the last couple of years of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ where things were firing in both movies and TV, and everyone was telling me how well it was going and I was really unhappy,” he revealed.
About a father named Ted recounting his adventures of living with his friends in New York City, “How I Met Your Mother” ran for nine seasons from 2005 to 2014. During that time, Segel played Marshall Eriksen alongside Josh Radnor as Ted Mosby, Alyson Hannigan as Lily Aldrin,...

The villain in Penelope Spheeris' 1992 comedy hit "Wayne's World" was clearly minted in his era. Rob Lowe plays a character named Benjamin who seeks to turn the heroes' local cable access show into a slick, well-advertised, commercial entertainment. Benjamin, possessed of few scruples, sees nothing wrong with building new sets, bringing in high-tech toys, and requiring Wayne and Garth (Mike Meyers and Dana Carvey) to interview the show's biggest sponsor. Wayne and Garth are getting a great deal of money to expand their show and their show's audience, but they resent that they have to sell out in order to do it.
For those born after, say, 1990, "selling out" was once considered among Generation X's most grievous mortal sins. Making antiestablishment art in a basement while barely scraping by financially was the morally upright thing to do, while allowing a corporation to pay you for compromise was punishable by excommunication from GenX.

Although Cameron Diaz came out of retirement for the action-comedy Back in Action, she may be back out of action soon enough, as sources are suggesting her latest movie could be her last.
According to a source, Cameron Diaz may have stepped back onto the movie set a little too soon, even after not being on the big screen for nearly a decade. “These back-to-back 10-hour workdays have been a lot on her and she hates being away from [daughter] Raddix…Cameron loves being a mom more than anything in the world.”
Now 50, Diaz hasn’t appeared in a movie since 2014, when she starred in Annie, The Other Woman and Sex Tape. Cameron Diaz previously discussed her retirement (which she announced in 2018), saying she wanted to have more control of her life, saying, “When you do something at a really high level for a long period of time, other parts of...

Blumhouse Productions is one of the biggest names in the horror genre these days – and the folks at Blumhouse were so impressed by writer/director Beth de Araújo’s feature debut Soft & Quiet that they decided to put the company name on the movie ahead of its festival premiere, even though they weren’t involved in the making of it. The film has since landed a distribution deal with Momentum Pictures in the US, Canada, and the UK, and will be receiving a theatrical and VOD release on November 4th. With that date drawing near, a trailer for Soft & Quiet has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Actress Cameron Diaz has been branded rude after Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner claimed that the actress once hoped a magazine staffer would “get cancer”.
Jann seemingly dissed the 50-year-old star in his upcoming tome, “Like a Rolling Stone”, per Page Six, reports aceshowbiz.com.
Jann reportedly writes in his book that in the mid-2000s, the celeb-heavy magazine was part of the zeitgeist. He goes on to say that one of the magazine’s earliest scoops was a paparazzi photo of “an actress” sharing a kiss with Justin Timberlake on a surfboard.
Although Jann doesn’t specifically mention Cameron by name, his writing seems to imply he’s referring to the ‘Sex Tape’ actress, as she was famously photographed sharing a sweet kiss with the “Can’t Stop the Feeling” crooner while the two vacationed in Hawaii in 2006.

A man returns home for an Easter celebration with his riotous, bickering, eating, drinking, laughing, loving family, in this love letter to the Filipino-American community.
Jay Chandrasekhar‘s Easter Sunday is definitely a promising step forward when it comes to significant diversity in the film industry, but that’s almost everything it has going for it. This is an extremely slow-paced and outrageously unfunny comedy that fails at its number one goal – making audiences laugh.
This is a film that prides itself on being an incredibly upbeat, feel-good comedy that’ll inspire you to be closer to your family and love one another. Maybe some viewers will leave the theatre feeling more appreciation for their loved ones, but more than likely, most audiences are just going to leave the...

Jo Koy’s comedy film “Easter Sunday” has released its first trailer, giving a first glimpse into the antics of a loving, chaotic Filipino American family and the large ensemble cast who plays them.
Jo Valencia (Jo Koy) is in for a weekend of good old-fashioned family fun when he and his son (Brandon Wardell) head home for Easter Sunday – “like the Filipino Super Bowl.” A single father and comedian, Jo is famous for his famous beer commercial tagline (“Let’s get the party started babaaaay!”). His career is a source of confusion and hilarity in his family; when he tells his mother (Lydia Gaston) he’s going to film a pilot, she thinks he’s going to play “a pilot on a TV show.” Back home, he runs into an old flame (played by Tiffany Haddish), tells jokes at church and spends time mediating feuds at various family functions,...

Segel, who was speaking Monday as part of a keynote address opening the sixth edition of the TV-focused Berlinale Series Market and Conference, described sitting in studio offices several years ago for “one of the biggest movies I ever did,” as an unnamed exec charted its hypothetical success across a blank graph on a dry-erase board.

Kevin Hart, Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black are thrown into another crazy adventure in the first trailer for Sony Pictures’ “Jumanji: The Next Level.” The film is the sequel to 2017’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” a surprise Christmas smash hit that went on to earn $404 million in the U.S. and a huge $964 million worldwide. The film set a domestic record for Sony and passed “Spider-Man” to become the studio’s highest-grossing U.S. release (unadjusted for inflation), which means the pressure is on for “The Next Level” to deliver the box office goods this upcoming holiday season.

Jason Segel's place in television history was already assured with roles in prominent series like Freaks and Geeks and How I Met Your Mother. Yet, he’s decided to pad his resume and return to the medium that launched his career.
AMC gave a full season pickup back in July 2018 for Dispatches from Elsewhere, a 10-episode mystery anthology series starring and created by Segel. The series is about a group of people who stumble upon a puzzle beyond the veil of ordinary life, leading them to a mystery far deeper than the characters ever imagined.
Joining Segel in the main cast marquee for Dispatches from Elsewhere is two-time Best Lead Actress Oscar winner Sally Field, along with André Benjamin, Richard E. Grant and Eve Lindley.

Disney and Pixar's Incredibles 2 delivered a massive opening weekend debut, not only shattering the previous opening weekend record for an animated film, but finishing with one of the top ten openings of all-time for a film of any genre. Additionally, Warner Bros.'s R-rated comedy Tag debuted in third position while Sony's Superfly fell short of expectations. With an estimated $180 million, Disney and Pixar's Incredibles 2 topped the previous opening weekend for an animated film set two years ago by Finding Dory with $135 million. On top of that, the film's opening weekend is the eighth largest all-time, topping the $179.1 million opening for 2016's Captain America: Civil War, which went on to gross over $500 million at the domestic box office. As for Incredibles 2's domestic future, an "A+" CinemaScore and an opening of this size seems to suggest a $500+ million domestic performance is in the offing, which...

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
Consider it official: Cameron Diaz is, in her own words, “actually retired.” The actress’ “Sweetest Thing” co-star Selma Blair made waves earlier this month when she tweeted that her pal had retired from the acting business, a note she later retracted, only for it to be confirmed by Diaz when the actresses (alongside fellow “Sweetest Thing” star Christina Applegate) reunited to chat about their raunchy 2002 feature. Diaz out.
Asked by Entertainment Weekly if the trio has reunited since filming the feature, the actresses were honest: No, but maybe they should. It also gave Diaz the chance to set the record straight on her retirement status, as she chimed in after Applegate joked that she was “semi-retired,” saying, “I’m totally down. I’m semi-retired, too, and I am actually retired, so I would love to see you ladies.

So, is she or isn't she? Cameron Diaz has been noticeably absent from the Hollywood spotlight for months, leading many fans to wonder if she has officially retired from acting. Interestingly, Cam's friend Selma Blair seemed to shed some light on the actress' current work situation during a new interview — but then quickly retracted her comments just hours later. While speaking to Metro News UK on Sunday, March 11, Selma, 45, said Cameron, also 45, has chosen to step away from acting to instead focus on starting a family with her husband, Benji Madden. "I had lunch with Cameron the other day. We were reminiscing about [our 2002 film The Sweetest Thing]. I would have liked to do a sequel but Cameron’s retired from acting. She’s like, 'I’m done,'" Selma shared. Cameron, Selma, and Christina Applegate in The Sweetest Thing. (Photo Credit: R/R) "I mean, she doesn’t need to make any more films.

There have been more than 20 years since the release of the original ‘Jumanji’ (1995) starring the iconic Robin Williams. Even though the movie was heavily panned by the critics (it has a score of 39 out of 100 from Metacritic.com and 51 out of 100 from Rotten Tomatoes) the audience loved it and it is considered as an all-time classic. Moreover, it made a massive amount of money in the worldwide box-office by earning an estimated $262,797,249 with a budget of $50 000 000. That is why it’s always a risky business to touch on such an insanely revered movie, adored by millions of fans around the world. When the idea of remaking ‘Jumanji’ was initially put on the table, there were tons of negative comments under Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s posts on the social media. Most of the folks out there were afraid that the WWE star turned actor and his ‘Seven Bucks Productions’ company...

It's become a surprise commercial and critical hit - so what has the new Jumanji film got right?
Spoilers lie ahead for Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle.
Over the weekend, I was back at my local multiplex to see the quite wonderful Coco. On the way in, I saw the manager of said picture palace, and we had a bit of a chat. He’s a friendly man, and just the kind of manager you want: always checks that everyone’s okay, is there if anything goes wrong.
He’s also good for a bit of insider chat, too. And we got talking about Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle.
I don’t think I was alone in inwardly sighing when I first learned of a reboot/sequel to Jumanji. I don’t hold massive affection for the original (although I thought Zathura was great), but still enjoyed it.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Culturally clueless cinematic vomit, a cynical undertaking embracing the most diminishing clichés it can apply to its characters. Low stakes, and low humor. I’m “biast” (pro): big fan of Dwayne Johnson, occasion fan of Jack Black
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
More than 20 years after 1995’s Jumanji — the family adventure film about a couple of kids who get sucked into an ancient board game and have to play it to completion to escape — the sequel has arrived… and this time, it’s all about hapless teens who get sucked into a videogame and have to play it to completion to escape. Was anyone demanding a second go at Jumanji? Zathura, the 2005 “spiritual sequel” — which, to be fair, does sound more like marketing baloney than anything else — was a flop. And, to be “fair” to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,...

After Steven Spielberg and company broke visual effects barriers with Jurassic Park, two years later, 1995’s Jumanji brought more large-scale, creature-focused thrills to theaters. Directed by Joe Johnston–who would go on to get his own crack at the dinosaur franchise a few years down the road–the Robin Williams-led adventure occupies that rare subset of oft-replayed, worn-down VHS tapes from childhood that one might be hesitant to revisit for fear of the nostalgic charm wearing off. In many ways, the set-up of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle may quell some trepidation in this regard.
Functioning as a sequel rather than a reboot, there’s gratefully no CGI recreation of Robin Williams (in fact, only a brief reference), an altogether different setting as we go into the game rather than vice versa, and more modern concerns in virtually every aspect (Yes, “yaaass queen” is uttered during an action scene...

Later in the day, during his appearance on The Real, Ray J gushed about expanding his family.

I've had a change of heart recently when it comes to sequels. After seeing Blade Runner 2049, I really believe sequels can be a good thing when done right. Even when the sequel is decades after the original. And in the spirit of believing, I really believe the new Jumanji movie is going to be great.
The new trailer for Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle doesn't show too much of anything new. It feels mostly like it's focusing on showing off the Rock as much as possible. "Wow, isn't the Rock strong?", "The Rock is so handsome", "The Rock doesn't take anything from anybody". We get it, Dwayne, you are great! Even with all the focus on the Rock, it still is pretty cool. It gives a better idea of how this Jumanji is connected to the first.

For movie lovers, October is the gloriously ghoulish time of year when we celebrate one kind of film above all others. That’s right: Biting comedies about dysfunctional New York Jews who finally decide to air their grievances after decades of resentment! Um… well, maybe Netflix didn’t get the memo. It’s not as though the streaming service isn’t scaring up some choice horror titles in time for Halloween (don’t miss “Raw” or “The Cult of Chucky”), but most of the month’s big new additions aren’t exactly in season.
Case in point: The splashiest arrival is a Noah Baumbach film, and it’s safe to say that “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)” is considerably less frightening than any of the Adam Sandler comedies that Netflix has brought to you before. On the other hand, it’s true that movies can terrify you in a...

Sony Pictures has released new domestic and international trailers for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and they offer lots of fun and adventurous new footage that I think some of you will enjoy. We even get a glimpse at what happens to the board game version of Jumanji from the original film. It looks like maybe the person who finds the board game on the beach ended up being the one to adapt it into a video game.

There’s several ways you can look at “Jumanji,” a reboot of the franchise started in 1995 with Robin Williams, but quickly abandoned. One, the modern version features Dwayne Johnson, arguably the world’s biggest and bankable star, so it has that going for it. It also looks like a cross between “Kong: Skull Island” and “Land Of The Lost.”

While chatting with Janet Mock on the podcast Never Before -- an excerpt of which was featured in Tuesday's Lenny letter -- Kris refers to her ex by her given name, Bruce Jenner, during the conversation.

Stephen Colbert has made no secret of his opinions about Donald Trump. The late night host has been a ray of light in an endlessly depressing news cycle, inventing new and myriad ways to roast the president. But Colbert has been quietly staging a more subtle act of rebellion on “The Late Show,” by celebrating people of different races, genders, and orientations with a refreshingly inclusive showcase of stand-up comedians.
Countless stand-up careers have been launched by plum late night appearances, including storied debuts by Joan Rivers, Eddie Murphy, and Ellen Degeneres on Johnny Carson’s “The Tonight Show.” Luckily for emerging comedians everywhere, the current resurgence of late night means the tradition is alive and well, which can be especially helpful for those comedians who might otherwise be a token at a comedy club — namely anyone who is not a straight, white man. The first full trailer has been released for Dwayne Johnson's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and the movie turned out to look a lot better than I was expecting! It actually looks like it could be a lot of fun! I love the whole avatar concept and how the main actors are really playing teenagers in these adult bodies that they now inhabit.
