Ties That Bind: Taylor-Johnson’s Erotic Adaptation Forgoes a Glimpse of Eros
Playful marketing provocations, heralded by the succinct tagline “Curious?” standing out beneath black and white production stills, somehow manages to be the most titillating aspect of the highly anticipated film adaptation of E.L. James’ erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey, which, like many of its romantically inclined counterparts, only proves that watching people fuck or fall in love is generally only interesting to those involved directly. That’s, of course, discounting voyeurs and James’ core audience of straight-laced, sexually repressed hausfraus who have never taken an opportunity to explore base tendencies. It is their embrace that has resulted in this pop culture fixation. In a superficial sense, it’s enthralling to see that a studio production so clearly addresses notions of sexual pleasure, but fears of censorship have reigned in director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s visual freedom, and considering the subject matter,...

Projects from Italy, Ireland, Hungary and Poland were the winners at this year’s edition of the When East Meets West (Wemw) co-production market.
The market featured 22 international projects, comprising 12 fiction feature films and 10 documentaries from 29 countries.

A documentary was also the winner of the new Egg Digital Cinema Award which was given to Dublin-based Jeremiah Cullinane of Planet Korda Pictures for his production of Lithuanian-born writer director Olga Cernovaite’s Butterfly City.

Whether you’re running a marathon, building muscle or just trying to lose weight, working out is a grim activity. Schlepping yourself to the gym to see people much healthier than you making better use of the machines than you’ll ever achieve can be downright depressing. Most of us poor fools who dare to get up from the sofa and venture into the world of the fit and healthy make the experience more bearable by deafening ourselves with pre-made gym playlists; music can help deal with the monotony and drown out the accusing laughter at your inability to master level 4 on the stepper machine.
The thing is, most gyms and most exercise playlists you can readily come across play dance music almost exclusively. Now if you’re into dance music, that’s all well and good, jog on. But what if you’re of more of the rock persuasion?...

Holiday reunions are meant to be pleasurable, but in Danny Reagan's case, it's not exactly a shock such an encounter would keep him on the job.
The NYPD detective (Donnie Wahlberg) initially enjoyed welcoming his childhood friend Mickey (guest star Tom Cavanagh) back home in "Ties That Bind," the last 2013 episode of CBS' "Blue Bloods." In the tale by series co-executive producer Brian Burns, Mickey and wife Connie (guest star Rebecca Budig) relocated from Florida back to New York to help care for her ill mother.
Looking out his window and admiring Mickey's Mercedes, Danny also saw a supposed electric-company van he immediately "made" as a surveillance vehicle. At work the next day, Danny was shown photos by the detective who conducted the stakeout -- and who inferred that presumed Realtor Mickey actually was connected to one of Florida's top crime families.

Alter Bridge are fast becoming a household name due in no small part to the angelic tones of lead vocalist Myles Kennedy’s stint as Slash’s frontman.
Take three of the four guys from one of the most (unnecessarily) hated bands in history; Creed, replace that bands’ Achilles heel with Mr Kennedy, coupled with the want to break away from all that’s gone before, and you have Alter Bridge.
Whilst their first album still appeared to be leaning on some subtle Creedian tropes with the likes of Broken Wings and Down To My Last, sophomore effort Blackbird was a knock on the door of the all-time greats, instantly propelling the band into their own category of melodic hard rock.
Kennedy was now fully on-board, contributing phenomenal melodies and a twin-guitar attack that would come to define them. Blackbird offered his genuinely jaw-dropping range powered by a technical beast...

The Pompatus of Fate: Cianfrance’s Masterpiece an Ode to Ties that Bind
After his gloriously depressing 2010 sophomore film, Blue Valentine, a hellish drama revolving around one couple’s marital strife, Derek Cianfrance somehow manages to top that excellent film with a gloriously staged masterpiece, The Place Beyond the Pines, that’s got all the makings of Greek tragedy. Recalling the classic sagas from American auteurs in the 1970s, anywhere from Sidney Lumet to Coppola, Cianfrance has established himself as a bold, provocative American filmmaker, this latest a boiling, festering portrait of distant fathers and sons and the inextricable possibility of passing on the consequences of one’s actions between generations.
A motorcycle stunt driver in a traveling carnival, Luke (Ryan Gosling) returns to Schenectady, New York to find that a fling with a waitress last year, Romina (Eva Mendes) has resulted in a son. However, Romina now lives with...

Ep David Eick and Luke Pasqualino Share How Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome Was Brought to Life
Ever since it debuted in 2003, science fiction fans have been clamoring for more about the dark, murky work of Battlestar Galactica, which resulted in the prequel series Caprica and the latest addition to the saga, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. Blood & Chrome revisits the life of William Adama just as he is leaving the academy and engaging in the seemingly never-ending Cylon battle. In a recent press conference call executive producer David Eick and star Luke Pasqualino talked about the genesis of Blood & Chrome, the challenges in bringing it to the digital screen and where the Adama journey goes in this third series in the Galactica universe.
Where did the idea for doing another prequel come from?
David: I was asked by the network to think about a concept that would be under the umbrella or the rubric of the Battlestar Galactica cannon that would make sense as an online series.

Ties That Bind: Wang’s Debut a Cinematic Knockout
Every so often, unpredictably, a film comes out of nowhere, with no pomp or circumstance, heralding a brilliant new cinematic talent. Quietly debuting at the tail end of 2011, Patrick Wang’s In the Family, received a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award, which set off a slow but steady trickle of theatrical releases for this quiet gem across the country. Skillfully avoiding stereotypes, clichés, and any manner of manipulative techniques in order to generate emotional discourse, Wang has created what sounds like a hot topic potboiler on paper and made a film that’s as hopefully humanistic as it is melancholically realistic.
Chip (Sebastian Banes), wakes up one morning and bounces into his parents’ bedroom, waking up his dads, Joey (Patrick Wang), and Cody (Trevor St. John). We watch their breakfast ritual, as the three warmly and familiarly converse, all...

Revolution, Season 1, Episode 8: “Ties That Bind”
Written by David Rambo and Melissa Glenn
Directed by Guy Norman Bee
Airs Mondays at 10 pm (Et) on NBC
Since Rachel told Monroe about the pendants that turn the power back on, the latter has been on an active hunt to find them. With his seemingly feared yet trusted Sergeant Strausser on the hunt for Miles and Charlie, it seemed inevitable that the travelling group looking for Danny would run into the militia once again, and this time on the militia’s terms, something made more ominously clear by the fact that only one of Rachel’s leads panned out. The anticipated showdown between Strausser and Miles took center stage in this week’s episode, providing a thrilling episode that further develops a new enemy, and shifts a significant amount of power from one group to another.

Hopefully you have watched – hopefully more than once – the first two webisodes of Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome that premiered last Friday on Machinima Prime and posted here on SciFiMafia.com. The effects, the action, the storyline, the cast, it’s all great.
Episodes, each 7-12 minutes long, will continue to premiere on Machinima Prime every Friday through the end of the month, will be released on Blu-ray on February 19, 2013, and will premiere as a complete movie on Syfy in the first quarter of 2013.
In support of the premiere, Executive Producer Ron Eick participated in a Q&A panel last Friday to answer some questions and to set the record straight about Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome‘s plans to air on Syfy, some hopeful plans for the future, and more. He was joined by series star Luke Pasqualino later in the panel.

Director: Guy Norman Bee. Writer: Eric Kripke. Cast: Billy Burke, Tracy Spiridakos, Giancarlo Esposito, Zak Orth, David Lyons, Daniella Alonso, Graham Rogers, Jd Pardo, and Elizabeth Mitchell. "Revolution" is a show from NBC that continues to lose its viewers. The show has lost almost half of its viewership since its premiere episode, simply called "Pilot." This reviewer admittedly has a difficult time finding the motivation to continue to follow this season. "Revolution" seems to be missing its edge. Perhaps, this reviewer will forever be regulated to specialty television networks like the AMC and HBO. In the latest episode for "Revolution," "Ties That Bind," a few new characters are introduced including Nora's (Daniella Alonso) sister, Mia (Alyssa Diaz). Mia is not to be trusted, however and neither is Monroe's (David Lyons) latest enforcer, Strausser (David Meunier). Miles (Billy Burke) has a lot to deal with in this episode including the Allegheny River.

- 28 Days Later Analysis
We’re far enough into Revolution’s first season to know one thing for certain – this show is never going to be great. The best we can hope for now is something stupid in a fun way, or fun in a stupid way. I’ve modified my expectations accordingly: in order to be successful, Revolution need only keep me entertained for an hour. I no longer expect cohesive storytelling or well-developed characters, but I at least need to be engaged. “Ties That Bind” couldn’t even do that.At this point, it’s honestly tough to be disappointed by Revolution, a series that still has some potential but squanders more and more of it on a weekly basis. “Ties That Bind,” however, was the weakest outing yet. On the plus side, we’ve answered the question of, “How low can you go?” By default, next week’s episode should almost certainly be an improvement.

There were plenty of familial ties to go around in "Ties That Bind," along with some seriously head-scratching developments.
The character connections remain the strongest aspect Revolution has going for it, and it’s great to see some of the other major families, aside from the Mathesons, step into the spotlight.
Tom and Julia’s actions to get Jason out from Monroe’s clutches and keep him from being sent on a suicide mission to California were downright cunning. Their loyalties weren’t in line with the Republic, but with their family instead; because those loyalties are bound to blood, they are easily malleable.
Julia’s interests, meanwhile, are focused on making sure Tom can step up and lead. She has no investment in the republic. It’s a stark contrast to Tom, as he knows exactly what happens when something negative is said about the republic: death or disenfranchisement.

We've caught glimpses of General Monroe's secret weapon before, but on next week's "Revolution" (Mondays at 10 p.m. Et on NBC) we'll finally get to see the infamous Sgt. Strausser (David Meunier) in action.
What's even scarier than Monroe's trust in him? The fact that he's apparently the one guy who scares even the fearless Miles Matheson (Billy Burke). This is the first time we've seen the former leader of the Militia look truly afraid, and let's just say, Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos) and Aaron (Zak Orth) don't find it terribly reassuring ...
Here's the synopsis for the Nov. 12 episode, "Ties That Bind":
When Nora (Daniella Alonso) encounters a close relative, she must make a difficult choice between family and a promise. Meanwhile, one of the most ruthless members of the Militia is tracking Miles (Billy Burke), Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos) and the gang and General Monroe (David Lyons) hands Captain Neville (Giancarlo Esposito) a stern warning.

If you have seen Leila Djansi’s Sinking Sands (see my review Here), you would know that the ambitious filmmaker doesn’t shy away from female-driven, heavy and poignant themes that elicit intense emotions. Among those recurring themes explored are gender roles, traditional marriage ideals, feminism, mental illness, loyalty, female bonds, community, African culture, stigmatization, religious/superstitious beliefs, subordination, sexual abuse. This filmmaker knows drama, in a good way. Djansi proves it once again with Ties That Bind. The film centers around three women: Buki (Ama Abrebese), Adobea (Omatola Jalade Ekeinde) and Theresa (Kimberly Elise). They all share...
