The next time the Satellite of Love is subjected to terrible movies, it’ll be on Netflix’s dollar. As announced on Thursday, the cult series “Mystery Science Theater 3000” (also known as “MST3K: The Return”) will be returning for a second season sometime — per the lyrics of the show’s theme song — “in the not-too-distant future.”
The announcement came at the end of the now annual “MST3K” Turkey Day Marathon, as stars Felicia Day and Jonah Ray, alongside creator Joel Hodgson, shared the news. Check out their reaction below:
“MST3K” has had quite the journey since its inception nearly 30 years ago. After an epic run that began in 1989, eventually migrating from local Minneapolis TV to Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi Channel, “MST3K” was initially canceled in 1999. Then, it returned to its fans after a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign. While the first season of the show, released by Netflix in April 2017, was thus fan-sponsored,...

It's been years since we've been on the "Satellite of Love", and boy does it feel good to be back. I've already watched the first 3 episodes, and while they are a bit slow to get going, they definitely have the feel and strength that the original does. Maybe it's nostalgia, and my desire to see this succeed, but I truly enjoy the new MST3K series, and this clip of them riffing on the beginning of Stranger Things is truly brilliant.
It's just the beginning of the first episode, but it is very funny. It just shoots out the jokes one after another, mocking names, to the setting to Sheriff Hopper's physical appearance. I look forward to more of these mini episodes mocking Netflix popular hits. Until then, we have a whole season of terrible old movies to watch them slam. Check them out on Netflix.

We’ve Got Movie Sign again! It’s been 18years since the last time the mad scientists forced the bots and their human companion to watch cheesy movies. Mystery Science Theater 3000, a low-budget but hilarious cable comedy show from the 80s-90s, has been resurrected on Netflix, with a new cast but the same satiric spirit. Does Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return live up to its predecessor?
In the not-too-distant past (1988-1999), Mystery Science Theater 3000 was a cult hit, first on Comedy Central and then on the SyFy Network. Created by comedian Joel Hodgson, it ran for over 10 years, despite numerous cast changes, and a netwrok change, along the way. MST3K gained a legion of devoted fans, (myself included) all of whom were sad to see the show go off the air in 1999. Almost two decades later, Hodgson has brought his comedic gem back, with all-new episodes.

Stranger Things fans have seen Jim Hopper's rude awakening one sun-splashed morning early in the series, but now they can watch the scene with comedic commentary by the crew from Mystery Science Theater 3000, which now has a new season available to watch on Netflix.
"The MST3K crew has a new title to watch: Stranger Things.
Jonah and the bots riff on one of their sister shows on Netflix, “Stranger Things.” Huge thank you to Stranger Things for allowing us to run amok for a few minutes on their amazing show!
Anticipated Reboot of Fan Favorite Series Mystery Science Theater 3000 will be Available on Netflix in the Us, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK and Ireland in the “Not-Too-Distant Future." Original creator Joel Hodgson will be joined by comedian Jonah Ray (“Jonah Heston”) as the new host and Felicia Day (Geek & Sundry) as “Kinga Forrester.”
A Kickstarter starter campaign, spearheaded by Hodgson and Shout!

Mystery Science Theater 3000 is back! In case you didn’t know, the series was just rebooted on Netflix, and renamed Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return, and right now, there are 14 brand new episodes waiting for you to consume right now.
In celebration of this revival, Netflix put out a little teaser where the gang riffs on one of last year’s biggest sensations: Stranger Things. If there is a better example of cross-promotional synergy, I just don’t know what is.
Check out the video below!
While Mystery Science Theater is better known for riffing on B-movies, this latest video certainly makes us wish they’d consider more A-list material. Sure, they may not have the gaping faults of something like Plan 9 From Outer Space, but as was proven in this clip, the opportunity is still there.
What’s more, I guarantee there were at least...

In the not-too-distant future, next Sunday A.D. …well, actually, right now, on Netflix. That’s right, the cult favorite TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000 has returned, with all-new hosts, all-new Mads and all-new voices for some familiar bots. Begun as a Kickstarter and now launching on Netflix, Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return is conceived as a new season of the original show. It builds off of the property’s beloved past and adds a few new quirks, but maintains the basic format of a guy, his bots and a pantheon of bad films.
The conceit of the new Mystery Science Theater 3000 mirrors the old: a hapless employee of Gizmonic Institute finds himself imprisoned on the Satellite of Love by two mad scientists who force him to watch bad movies. He maintains his sanity by riffing on the films, with the help of his robot companions Tom Servo,...

Way way back in 2015, Matthew Monagle wrote a column about the Mystery Science Theater 3000 Kickstarter that was going on. Show creator Joel Hodgson had this crazy idea to bring the franchise back via crowdfunding and was asking fans of the franchise to donate. Monagle wrote that the original show held a special place for him. It made his dreary demeanor open up and he would bellow into laughter as he explains here:
That show made me laugh, big, whooping, ugly laughter that prevented me from ever watching the show in the presence of new acquaintances or adolescent crushes.
Even though he would be what we should call a “legacy fan”, he was uncomfortable with donating to the creator who had given him so much joy. The Kickstarter was asking for a ton of money, where if only $2 million was funded there would be three new episodes...

1. “Dear White People” Season 1 (available April 28)
Why Should I Watch It? “Dear White People” is based on Justin Simien’s 2014 Sundance sensation of the same name, pulling characters and plot lines from the satirical comedy that helped introduce us to the glory that is Tessa Thompson. While the “Creed” star won’t be returning, other breakouts from the film are, and the core story — of a predominantly white Ivy League university facing a heated racial debate after a misguided blackface Halloween party — has been refined to fit a serialized format. It is hilarious, sharp, and so timely it hurts. Don’t miss it.
Best Episode: We caught the first two at SXSW, and though both are absolutely stellar, I’ve got to give the edge to the pilot. Logan Browning, as a radio personality who hosts a show titled “Dear White People,” gives a finely layered turn and the general...

Hey, Mystery Science Theater 3000 fans! Netflix has released the first trailer for their revival series, and it's wonderfully cheesy in the most awesome ways. Seriously, you're gonna love it.
The new series puts Jonah Ray, Hampton Yount, and Baron Vaughn back in the theater as they take part in Kinga Forrester’s (Felicia Day) and Son of TV’s Frank’s (Patton Oswalt) evil experiments of watching hilariously bad B movies.
The trailer also hints at some of the movies that will be featured in the series. One of which includes is the 1961 film Reptilicus, which is a film that has been long requested by fans. I'm incredibly excited about this and will be enjoying some fun late nights watching it.

The eleventh entry in an on-going series of audiovisual essays by Cristina Álvarez López and Adrian Martin. Greg Mottola's Adventureland (2009) is now playing in the United States through February 29.Few subjects divide people more sharply and ferociously than respective tastes in music. We build our identities, our system of values, even our world-views, through the music we choose to love and cultivate, whether as players or listeners—and we project our musical distastes onto a screen (or a variety of screens) constituting those monstrous Others from which we differentiate and dissociate ourselves.Popular movies have a lot to do with propagating this fascinating but treacherous and unstable cultural process. Especially teen movies, which involve themselves with the vagaries of pop, rock, and other musical styles more extensively and intimately than most genres—particularly at the level of ‘sampling,’ of the selection of pre-existing tracks for the film soundtrack (and,...

You might think there are too many awards shows. You'd be wrong. Because if they constantly turn out performances like the ten below, we should have a new awards telecast every single day. Here are the ten best awards show performances of 2015. 10. Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake at the Country Music Association Awards, "Tennessee Whiskey" Chris Stapleton is undoubtedly the year's breakout country music star, and he even has a shot at Album of the Year at the upcoming Grammy Awards. This duet with Justin Timberlake was inspired, rad, and a pulsing, soulful version of a bona fide smash. 9. Kelly Clarkson at the Billboard Music Awards, "Invincible" With the possible exception of the #2 artist on this list, Kelly Clarkson is perhaps our most trusted live pop performer. "Invincible" gave Clarkson a chance to belt, endear us with her casual vulnerability, and wow us with some closing notes worthy of another "American Idol" crown.

Twenty-seven years ago, Joel Hodgson created a new universe that included two robots, himself, and a spaceship affectionately known as the Satellite of Love. This universe exists in the hilariously brilliant sci-fi TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000, which debuted on local Minneapolis television before stints on Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi Channel (now Syfy), until its cancellation in 1999. Earlier this month, Hodgson revived MST3K with a Kickstarter that funded at least three new episodes, and more are on the way if the fans keep giving. The show always centered on a man stranded in space (first Hodgson, then Mike Nelson) with two robot companions: Tom Servo is a gum-ball machine of sorts, and Crow T. Robot has a beak and is more of your run-of-the-mill ’bot. Each episode, the three characters are made to watch a B-movie as an experiment by “the Mads,” two mad scientists who harass...

In the not-too-distant future, "Mystery Science Theater 3000" may actually come back. Yes, the cult show that made fun of bad movies is hoping to stage a triumphant return through crowdfunding. Creator Joel Hodgson launched the Kickstarter campaign yesterday, and it's already raised almost $1 million as of this writing. That's half of the goal amount, which Hodgson says can fund three episodes. If $3.3 million is raised, that'll give us six episodes. $4.4 million means nine episodes, and $5.5 million means a full season of 12 episodes. (Hodgson said in a Reddit Ama that he's not yet sure where those episodes will actually be available.) A few caveats: yes, Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot will return (and you can get your very own Servo or Crow that was used in the episode if you pledge enough money), but they won't have the same voices you remember. And you won't see hapless humans Joel...

It’s time to dust off the old Satellite of Love: Mystery Science Theater 3000 is staging a comeback in the not-so-distant future.
A Kickstarter campaign was launched on Tuesday by the series’ creator and original star Joel Hodgson to revive the beloved cult program, which ran a combined total of 11 seasons and 197 episodes on a local Minneapolis television station before finding life on basic cable networks Comedy Central and Syfy. A feature-length film was also released in 1996.
Though the initial goal of $2 million would be enough for Hodgson to produce three full-length episodes, reaching $5.5 million would allow for...

Joel Hodgson, creator of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and its finest host (come at me, Mike fans!), launched a Kickstarter today to resurrect the beloved cult show. Having started on Minneapolis's local cable-access channel Ktma, MST3K was finally canceled in 1999 after a 12-year run that included stints on Comedy Central and Syfy. The campaign is asking for $2 million to create three new full-length episodes, with an ultimate goal of $5.5 million to shoot 12. Presumably, those numbers also include extensive structural repairs to the Satellite of Love, because I cannot imagine it's in good shape after all this time.

During Scorpion‘s Season 2 premiere, Walter is tasked with saving 10 million lives from a nuclear-powered satellite hurtling toward Earth — and he needs to do it with a banged-up hand and constant dizzy spells giving him trouble.
But in comparison to his love life woes, the whole Southern-California-blowing-up thing seems like a walk in the park.
Indeed, the CBS drama’s sophomore debut found Walter and Paige confronting their feelings for each other (in the most awkward way that two people can do that), Toby and Happy confronting their feelings for each other (in a surprisingly not-awkward way) and Team Scorpion...

I finally did it: I saw U2 in concert.
I may have waited too long to catch the band in its prime, but its 37 years of experience -- without a personnel change -- and undiluted passion have made it one of the biggest concert draws for decades now, even if recent albums have been uneven in inspiration.
The current tour, with Thursday night being the next-to-last of eight shows at Madison Square Garden, is promoting last year's Songs of Innocence, which I mostly like. It figured that the annoying album opener, "The Miracle of Joey Ramone" (I wrote that it "panders like a commercial") would also be the concert opener (unless you want to give that honor to Patti Smith's recording "People Have the Power," which at all those shows is the song the quartet has walked on to, coming through the audience and climbing onstage). But then, pandering...

Streaming video is a godsend if you want to catch up with recent seasons of TV series. But what's a TV fan to do who wants to stream older shows? Netflix has very little from before the millennium, and Amazon Prime has very little from before 1990.
That's not a knock; the big streaming services know their market. Still, it's worth remembering that Amazon's initial appeal as a bookseller was it's long-tail catalog, the notion that comprehensiveness was worthwhile because somebody somewhere would want that obscure or ancient title, that the markets for all those titles were collectively significant and worth catering to, and that the Internet had at last made it easier to connect those customers with what they wanted.
But until the big streaming services step into the long-tail breach, Shout Factory TV (at shoutfactorytv.com) is ready to make a home there. The boutique streaming service, which is free and requires no subscription,...

We’re back with another news round-up. This time around we have a casting update on the Matt Smith-starring Patient Zero, special features details for Shout! Factory’s 4-disc Mystery Science Theater 3000 DVD box set, and news on The Jetsons in-development animated feature film.
Deadline reveals that Stanley Tucci is lined up to play the head villain in Patient Zero, the upcoming horror-thriller from Screen Gems. Tucci will play “a deliciously evil role: a professor who becomes infected, and highly violent. He becomes determined to crash the lab that’s working on a cure and thwart the search for Patient Zero.” Matt Smith (Doctor Who) and Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones) star and Stefan Ruzowitzky (Deadfall) directs off a script by Mike Le (Dark Summer).
“In Patient Zero, an unprecedented global pandemic of a super strain of rabies has resulted in the evolution of a new species driven by violence.

Reactions from the talent behind films eviscerated on MST3k have varied (it could be a joke, but the crew claims Joe Don Baker of Mitchell fame wants to take a swing at them), though not as much as fans of the films proper. A famous, though unverified, story has Dennis Miller flying the cast to a filming of his HBO show only to scream at them for having their way with Marooned! In light of the recent announcement that creator Joel Hodgson wants to reboot the cult favourite, here’s a look at a few episodes that may not have been playing fair.

If you didn't get to see Morrissey this year after he cancelled the majority of his tour dates due to medical issues, his live set last night at the Nobel Peace Prize concert is the next best thing. The outspoken vegetarian stuck to the music -- avoiding any controversial comments -- but made an odd...

There are a handful of unimpeachable Thanksgiving institutions. Multi-thousand calorie meals? Of course. Football games featuring the Lions and Cowboys? Naturally. Parades? You bet. Watching hypnotically wonderful marathons of Mystery Science Theater 3000? Unfortunately, not since 1997.
Of course, that all changes this Thanksgiving. EW is pleased to announce that MST3K creator Joel Hodgson is hopping on board the Satellite of Love once again to program the return of Turkey Day. Shout! Factory, who have been doing a stellar job putting out MST3K on DVD, is helping to celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary with a Turkey Day Marathon, curated and hosted by Hodgson.

It was announced today that Morrissey will release a live cover of Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love" as a tribute to Reed's passing. (Listen to the original below.) The song was recorded in Las Vegas on November 25, 2011. It will come out on December 3, in conjunction with the U.S. release of Morrissey's autobiography, Morrissey. Upon originally hearing the news, Morrissey had this to say about Reed: "He has been there all of my life. He will always be pressed to my heart. Thank God for those, like Lou, who move within their own laws, otherwise imagine how dull the world would be." ...

In 1972, a couple of years after the Velvet Underground imploded, Lou Reed, struggling to latch onto his identity as a solo artist, kicked off a period of rapid-fire image transformation roughly parallel to the more high-profile one that David Bowie was enacting. For three or four years, Reed tried on his outlaw personas like costumes from hell (Iggy-ish gutter hunk, kohl-eyed leather-bar rock & roll animal, cropped-blond ambisexual mannequin). It was his way of tapping into the liberating boundary-bashing of the post-’60s wasteland. During that period, Reed tried to live up to the ideal of being a “transformer” (the title of his second,...

Lou Reed was responsible for some of the most well-known and influential songs in the the history of rock and roll, and there’s no mistaking one of his signature tunes: “What Goes On,” “Walk on the Wild Side,” “Perfect Day,” “Satellite of Love,” and a dozen or so others. But today is a fitting time to celebrate his entire catalogue by looking beyond the tracks everybody knows from mainstream radio, television advertisements, and film soundtracks. Here are ten lesser-known classics written by Reed that deserve more love, and please give shout-outs to your own personal favorites in the comments section.1. “The Ostrich,” the Primitives (1965) As an in-house songwriter for the exploitation label Pickwick Records, Reed wrote tongue-in-cheek rip-offs of songs by the Beach Boys, Phil Spector, and many others. It’s unclear what exactly this one is ripping off, but its manic energy and noisy “ostrich”-tuned guitar foreshadows...

Eric Rohmer’s La Collectionneuse (1967) serves as a purposeful point of reference for writer-director Will James Moore’s Satellite of Love — not only does Moore cast the lead actor of La Collectionneuse (Patrick Bauchau) as an eccentric friend, but Moore even mimics the tranquil Mediterranean atmosphere of La Collectionneuse by setting Satellite of Love in the vineyards of the Texas Hill Country. Satellite of Love maintains the visually vibrancy of the French New Wave, particularly with its impeccably crafted mise-en-scène. Satellite of Love is absolutely gorgeous, from the oh-so-beautiful cast to Steve Acevedo’s masterful cinematography. Rohmer would probably be very proud that he inspired Moore’s film. Moore and I have been in correspondence ever since the film’s world premiere at the 2012 Dallas International Film Festival; but it was not until the 2012 Austin Film Festival that I finally had a chance to sit down with him and Jonathan Case (co-writer and music supervisor) to talk...

I saw Satellite of Love at Dallas International Film Festival earlier this year, and it was easily the loveliest movie I caught at the fest. It's set primarily in a vineyard, and the opening sequence takes place at a fair with some gorgeous shots on a Ferris wheel. In addition, the film is a poignant look at the complexity of intimate relationships, with excellent performances from Zachary Knighton and Nathan Phillips in particular. I reviewed the movie and wondered when we'd get to see it here in Austin.
Fortunately, Satellite of Love is in the Austin Film Festival lineup, and you have one more chance to see it -- tonight at 7 pm at the Rollins Theater at the Long Center. What were you planning to do tonight? Don't do that, see this movie instead. It really shines on a big screen, and director/co-writer Will James Moore will be there.
