Well Done Crisis of the Week
GunnersMate2 June 2018
Ex Machina gives us Fargo and Zane working together to "save" Holly while the Department of Defense arrives to install new equipment and remove anything left over from the Astraeus disaster. The crisis of the week is well developed and interesting and there is plenty of Carter-humor and season-arc development. The primary problem with this episode is the Department of Defense as a trigger character - this has been done multiple times over the history of Eureka, and their representatives are not only an obstacle to crisis resolution, but appear with no apparent actual connection to how Eureka runs, their chain of command, or logic in any form. They bark orders, make decisions that seem designed to cause chaos, and serve as pseudo bad guys (who are really misunderstood good guys). It's artificial, uninteresting, and distracting from what makes Eureka a good show. While there are plenty of interesting moments and elements in Ex Machine, it's not enough to overcome the cheap DoD character interference.

Sometimes GD is so smart and sometimes...

Warning: Spoilers
... it is so pedestrian. Having watched 4.5 seasons, I am convinced they do this on purpose. In the Ex-Machina episode, it seems to me they could reanimate Holly's body, extract her persona from the matrix and insert it in her new body/mind. The trauma from being dead would require hella sessions of psychological stress relief but eventually she would get over it. It seems distressing to leave Fargo without a mate when all the other characters are pairing off. This is such a smart show at times. I still like it even through the soap opera-ish plot lines. Most times the science is good. Sometimes it's comical to think a strait-laced cop can outsmart Nobel level scientists.

Who was Shaw?

A special forces major whose job was installing security systems can give orders to anyone for anything?

Zane was great.
