Shira Lazar, the CEO and founder of online media brand What’s Trending, and her boyfriend, Bart Baker -- YouTuber and musician -- are both noted stars on Livel.ly, a burgeoning livestreaming platform from the makers of popular lip-synching app Musical.ly. Baker, who frequently appears in broadcasts with Lazar, has said that he’s received six-digit view counts on certain live broadcasts -- and generated a whopping $30,000 in revenue during those streams.
Now, on Giving Tuesday -- held the day after Cyber Monday in order to encourage charitable giving -- Lazar and Baker are hoping to channel their massive following to help combat childhood cancer. The duo will host a 24-hour livestream produced by What’s Trending in partnership with Musical.ly kicking off today at 4:00 pm Et. The end of the year is upon us, which means it's time for media outlets to pick out the top videos of 2014. The latest channel undertaking that task is What's Trending, which has released a new video detailing Tubular Labs' picks for the most buzzed-about videos of the past 12 months.
In order to present Tubular's list, What's Trending host Shira Lazar brought YouTube prankster Yousef Erakat onto the program. Erakat, whose FouseyTUBE channel has more than 4.5 million subscribers, helped Lazar break down each entry on the list, though as a prankster, he seemed particularly interested in analyzing the "Mutant Giant Spider Dog" video YouTube chose as the top entry of 2014. "I guarantee you every prankster watched that," said Erakat, "and was like, 'why didn't I think of that?' Because it was genius."
Beyond the Polish prank, Lazar and Erakat discussed several other clips, channels, and trends chosen by Tubular Labs.

YouTube's newest celebrity would've been satisfied with five likes; instead, he has more than 118,000 and counting. If you haven't heard of 'Sir Fedora', get ready to smile, because his excitement is infectious. Sir Fedora, from the looks of it, is just an ordinary pre-pubescent boy. He likes watching YouTube videos and playing Minecraft. Six days ago, he started a new channel of his own, asking his audience for just one like. When he achieved that goal, he posted a new video featuring his incredibly excited reaction. This is where Reddit comes in. One user wondered what Sir Fedora's reaction would be like if he received thousands of likes, and sure enough, once Reddit finished doing its Reddit think, Sir Fedora became the YouTube star of the day. He is up to 32,000 subscribers and 13,900 Twitter followers, and his fans including The Gregory Brothers, What's Trending, and Bebop Vox. Of course, all...

YouTube's 2013 Rewind pretty much covered all of the big videos of the year, but What's Trending has dug a little deeper. Shira Lazar's YouTube channel teamed up with Tubular Labs to award 15 videos, channels, and creators that were particularly popular over the past year. Tubular, which officially launched in august as an analytics platform aimed at YouTube creators, provided the data for the 'awards', which were spread across a number of different categories. There were no trophies involved; instead, What's Trending and Tubular chose to use the results to discuss the big trends of the past year. The usual suspects are all there: PewDiePie, The Harlem Shake, 'The Fox', Psy, etc. With popularity as the deciding metric, there were a winners who probably don't deserve their plaudits (seriously, there were so many better prank videos in 2013 than Roman Atwood's backfiring anniversary prank), but I'm glad to see a few...

Stevie Ryan stops by the What's Trending studio to chat with Shira Lazar and Ethan Newberry about her VH1 series, "Stevie TV," personal inspirations, and best tips for twerking!
Now that season 2 of "Stevie TV" is well under way, Ryan is busy promoting the show, but she admits, "I literally go crazy," during the hiatus between seasons of her shows.
"I'm still winging it," she says of her hilarious impressions. "But this season, I think we have a lot more original characters and just original sketches."
"Some of them I like to see after and some of them I like to be in that moment," she adds. For instance, Justin Bieber is fun to play "because I can hook up with guys, girls, whoever I want pretty much." If What's Trending is honest about its mission to find the most buzzworthy stories YouTube has to offer, then it's about time the show discussed itself. The daily YouTube talk show has reportedly secured a seven-figure investment from Bedrocket Media Ventures, ceding an ownership stake to the media company in exchange for some serious capital. What's Trending will be keen to use the funds to support its incredibly regular stream of videos. The award-winning show, where host Shira Lazar interviews people who are making waves in the online video industry, posts multiple times a day and thus incurs significant production costs. Though the exact size of Bedrocket's investment is unknown, it is significant enough to keep What's Trending easily above water. The Black Box TV YouTube Original Channel has seen an impressive growth since joining Google's slate of funded channels; it now has more than 365,000 subscribers. Still the horror channel hasn't let popularity go to its head. It continues to produce top-notch content, which is probably why one of the channel's writers, Tony Valenzuela, won the Streamy Award for Best Writing in a Drama. But Valenzuela has his sights set on bigger, scarier, more thrilling heights. In an interview with Shira Lazar on What's Trending, he revealed that Black Box TV will release a feature film-length production sometime in 2013. Back in December, Kevin Smith announced tentative plans to write and direct Clerks 3, a project that he had been hinting at for years but never committed to make. This led many to wonder if he was actually going to follow through with his plans to retire as a director or if he was just using it as another way to attract attention and voice his disapproval of the current state of the movie industry. Now this week he has indicated that he may take Clerks 3 outside of the movie industry altogether. During a recent panel discussion on What's Trending, he explained that he now wants to release Clerks 3 as a book, leaving open the possibility of adapting it for the screen at a later date. What's more, he claims that the book will be released online one chapter at a time, taking fan feedback into consideration along the way. Here's...

Director Kevin Smith has been on an online video roll as of late. In January, he signed up with Maker Studios and dropped by Ray William Johnson's =3 for an episode. Smith is continuing his YouTube tour with an appearance on Epic Meal Time, where he joins the Canadian foursome for some supersized, north-of-the-border home cooking. Smith provides some guest commentary as he and the Emt crew cook up a "Burly Beaver Sandwich" featuring Canadian favorites such as poutine, BeaverTails fried dough, and maple syrup. Though Smith is not Canadian (anyone who's ever seen his movies knows of his love for New Jersey), the Epic Meal Time gang allow him to be an honorary Canuck because he always wears a hockey jersey. Smith's Emt cameo comes a little over a month after he signed on with Maker, a deal which will allow him to better leverage the content on his SeeSMod channel.

Kevin Smith has hinted that Clerks III might end up as a book, rather than a film.
The director initially claimed that the third Clerks movie would be his final theatrical film, although later he hinted that the project might become a Broadway play.
During a recent appearance on What's Trending, Smith said that he is considering crafting Clerks III into an anthology book series that would be released one chapter at a time.
"I know people would go, 'Why would you want to? You're an artist'. Now I'm a new-media artist and the new-media artist involves the audience and that's something I've been doing for nearly 20 years at this point anyway," he explained.
Smith also said that following the book's completion, he would transition the Clerks saga into a web series.
He also cautioned that he has yet to run his scenario by his Clerks collaborators.

Clerks III is still on the way. But Kevin Smith is taking it in a slightly different direction...
It's been a couple of years now since the release of Kevin Smith's ninth feature that he's directed, Red State, and plans for his tenth and final film behind the camera continue to evolve.
Originally, Smith had announced that he was to make ice hockey film Hit Somebody his last movie. But as the project evolved, it's migrated into a television miniseries that he's now developing and working on. That opened up a slot for his final movie, which Smith announced earlier this year would go to Clerks III.
Smith's frustration with the modern day system of movie distribution has been well recorded, of course, but whether you like the man or not, he was making some valid points about it when he decided to take Red State on the road.

Film maker turned podcaster Kevin Smith has usually been very open with his audience about what he wants to do next. He took that openness with him during an appearance Friday, on "What's Trending," a weekly online show. Smith appeared, along with friend Jason Mewes, to talk about the future of television, specifically online video channels.
When talk turned to, "Clerks III," which Smith says will be his final film, he ran through the list of ideas he'd had for the project. At one point he wanted to do it as a Broadway play, but realized that venture would lose a lot of people a lot of money. He announced in December that he had an idea for what could become a movie, but he'd only be willing to do it if all necessary players were involved.

In December, Kevin Smith said his last movie would be Clerks III. This weekend, however, he revealed on "What's Trending" that he's now instead leaning toward writing Clerks III as a book that will be released in installments. According to Smith, this method would allow him to explore the characters much more deeply. And by doing it one chapter at a time, he can incorporate the fan's feedback. Smith understands the criticism that might come from that: “I know people would go, ‘Why would you want to? You’re an artist.'” However, he argued: “Now I’m a new-media artist and the new-media artist involves the audience and that’s something I’ve been doing for nearly 20 years at this point anyway.” From there, he might make a feature or a web series, but the book would be first. Smith acknowledges that this is not a done deal yet...

Nine months ago, Chris Hardwick's Nerdist YouTube channel was a subscriber-free blank slate with nothing more than a heap of YouTube money and a dream. In that time period, Hardwick has brought more than 350,000 subscribers to the nerd culture-oriented channel, making it one of the most successful entries in the YouTube Original Channels Initiative. Given Hardwick's rapid video success, it's not surprising to hear the upcoming Streamys host talk about how at home he feels on YouTube. Hardwick sat down with Shira Lazar on the latest episode of What's Trending to discuss his hosting gig. Actor Jackson Rathbone picked up a Streamy nomination yesterday for his role as Nick Green in Aim High, so the recent announcement that the show will return for a second season is well timed. The teen heartthrob best known for his role in Twilight took some time out of his busy schedule to have a Hangout with Shira Lazar of What's Trending, where he discussed his role on the show and its upcoming second season. Feel free to peruse the long event at your leisure: Rathbone discussed how the show's partnership with Warner Brothers and film director McG allowd it to receive a bump in quality. “We have the production quality of a TV series you can see on any network," he said, "but it was also asking a lot of people to work for free.” According to Rathbone, a large chunk of the high quality comes from McG, who...

San Francisco (Reuters) - After struggling for years, in late 2010, Driving Sports TV, a scrappy, two-person video production outfit led by Ryan Douthit, finally began supporting itself with advertising income from YouTube.
It didn't matter that the channel's production set was simply a green screen in Douthit's cramped garage in a leafy Seattle suburb; Driving Sports TV's revenues were roaring like the rally car engines it featured.
Achieving self-sufficiency on YouTube was Douthit's dream. Then it became a nightmare.
Over the past year, Driving Sports TV's popularity and revenues have plummeted as much as 90 percent, Douthit said, as viewers abandoned him for slicker, more professional and better-marketed fare that's suddenly streaming onto YouTube.

Anthony Zuiker's Cybergeddon web series has been rolling along on Yahoo! Screen since its launch last week. The CSI creator has been promoting the heck out his new show, appearing several times alongside What's Trending?'s Shira Lazar at Social Media Week Los Angeles. After Lazar hosted a discussion with Zuiker regarding his feelings about the online video industry, she caught up with him after the event for a brief interview, which was recently posted to What's Trending?'s YouTube channel. The companion app discussed in the interview is the Cybergeddon game, where players must stop cybercrime threats in what seems to be a defend-your-castle format. The game has been downloaded to thousands of mobile devices since its launch, and if user reviews are to be believed, it's quite addicting. The game is one of the many ways that Zuiker is engaging his viewers through multiple platforms on both...

We've been following Shit Girls Say since it was just an adorable little Twitter feed. We were lucky enough to watch it become a cultural movement so expansive that it spawned its very own search engine. Last week, creators Kyle Humphrey and Graydon Shepard took their phenomenon to its logical next step by releasing a book of the same name. The book's release was synced up with the posting of a fourth Shit Girls Say episode on the show's YouTube channel, and Humphrey and Shepard also stopped by What's Trending? yesterday to discuss their recent renaissance. The duo fielded questions from Shira Lazar, who took a break from Social Media Week Los Angeles to ask them about the process of creating their book, which will feature each selected saying as a "visual gag." For instance, the phrase 'I really want a hot dog' is written in ketchup on a frankfurter,...

Shira Lazar will be joining Anthony Zuiker at Social Media Week Los Angeles tomorrow (again, more on this one later today), but in the meantime, she's been busy hosting a return appearance from one of the highest profile guests that her show What's Trending has ever had on set. Yesterday, filmmaker Kevin Smith stopped by to weave a masterfully told tale about his encounter with a paparazzo outside his house and answer fan questions about hate mail, Drake and more. Even when talking about an encounter that only a celebrity can fully understand (how many of us have been stalked around the block by a man with an enormous camera?), Smith manages to mix a certain everyman appeal into his storytelling style, the same appeal that underlies his films (especially Clerks). I was particularly amused by Smith's repeated assertion that he would "put everything on Front Street," which usually preceded some admission of profuse sweating.

Today is the eleventh anniversary of September 11. I lost several friends in New York City in the towers that day, and was living in Washington, D.C. at the time, and saw armored personnel carriers roll down the street. I don't care to live in fear of that day, or use it as a call to war, but today, I take a moment and remember the people I lost from my life that day.

Primetime entertainment got some mainstream and social media buzz last week as powers that be at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the 2012 Primetime Emmy nominations General Emmy tweets trended worldwide on Twitter, especially amongst the top nominees. The highest volume of social media interactions belonged to Game of Thrones with 11 nominations, The Big Bang Theory and Zooey Deschanel's New Girl with 5 nominations, and Glee with 3 nominations, followed by all those in the category snubs and surprises. And while it was kinda sorta interesting to watch the nominated individuals, studios, production companies, and other entertainment organizations flock to social media to talk about their nominations (or lack thereof), there was at least one Primetime Emmy Awards category where all that social media engagement was status quo. The nominees for Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media- Original Interactive Television Programming make a set of stellar new media programs that deserve the kudos from ATAS.

At Comic-Con 2012, we sat down with nerd extraordinaire Zachary Levi, best known for portraying the computer-whiz title character on NBC's Chuck and as the brain behind The Nerd Machine and Nerd HQ, a hit hot spot of the latest two hyped conventions -- and the place from which we were streaming live!
Levi's motivation behind fueling Nerd HQ has been all about the fans.
"I believe that as an entertainer, you're only as good as your audience and the people who support you," he says. "Every year we've gotten so much love at Comic-Con when we were doing Chuck panels, but we'd have a moderated panel for 50 minutes and then five minutes left over for fans. I just never really felt like that was right."
Taking matters into his own hands, Levi carved out a space to set up small and intimate panels, each a full hour of Q&A with the fans.

Robert Rodriguez has been talking about Sin City 2 for so long now that fans have a tough time believing it when he says things like "the time is finally coming" for Sin City 2, as he did last August. (Sequel talk has been ongoing since Sin City was released in 2005.)
Still, at the South By Southwest Festival, THR reports Rodriguez said Sin City 2 will start shooting over the summer, around the time Rodriguez is done working on Machete Kills, which starts shooting in April. Furthermore, Rodriguez told What's Trending (via SlashFilm) that there might even be some "overlap" between the two sequels.

Robert Kirkman, creator of the popular series The Walking Dead, discussed the comic and its relationship to the AMC show and their future.
Speaking on the success of the show, he said, "You take what's really cool about zombie movies, and you add soap opera stuff." Continuing, "It's trickin' dudes into watching something about emotions."
Kirkman will be appearing at the upcoming Image Expo conference in Oakland. Comparing it to other comic-book conferences, he says, "Comicon in San Diego is where you go to see Samuel L. Jackson from 400 feet away."
Yet, "Image Expo is a much more intimate, smaller location, where can come and actually spend more time with these people. I bet anyone could and come get Chris Hardwick to sit on their lap" --- at which point Chris jumped in Kirkman's lap, cradled into a ball and pretended to suckle the What's Trending influencer.
