Fighting sexism and homophobia.
PK_7120 July 2023
Marinette is a biopic about Marinette Pichon, one the best French female footballers of all time, and perhaps the most influential one. As many early female footballers at the highest level, she had to battle a lack of interest and resources, battle sexism and homophobia. She overcame some tough barriers, but she would be the first to tell you that she wasn't able to overcome all of them.

Marinette played with boys and with girls. She played locally, nationally and internationally. She was the first French footballer (male or female) to play professionally in the U. S., and she holds several goal-scoring records.

Off the pitch, her life was just as challenging, with a belligerent drunk for a father. She later became a pioneer within gay rights, being one of the first in France to marry someone of the same gender.

Marinette is an important story about an important person and role model.

I like this film and topic too, I like movies showing strong women, and not only now. I have always been fond of such stuff; but the problem here is that it was made just during a period when such scheme is really fashion, and that annoys me a lot...I guess that two decades ago, it would not have been produced. That said it remains an interesting plot, well directed, with a good cast and especially a surprising Alban Lenoir, very far from his BALLE PERDUE crap films series. And above all, I like movies speaking of sport. Here it is question of sport but also a social problem, because involving a young woman trying to succeed in life. And I also liked the short tribute to ROCKY - 1976 - when our lead character runs climbing the steps of the of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
